Homework #4: Netting/Coiling Project Reflection Post
Learning about netting and coiling were different processes. It was hard to learn netting and it took much longer to understand than coiling. In that aspect I preferred coiling. When I began my second project however I needed both. They were both time consuming and netting took time to learn where coiling takes time to use. I would like to spend more time with both in the future as I found the results fun and felt there could be more uses. I have already used coiling pieces as the subject of a painting but I thought it was fun in the sculpture pieces and would like to experiment more. Using netting, though I lacked the time to try I think there's potential to making actual items like bags and decorations. What was surprising about coiling was learning about the process and exploring through the work, working with materials and finding out more about forms. I liked using an object and how that contributes and changes or create difficulties for the sculptural and fiber pieces. It was rewarding to make something which was close to a conceptual object and to see similarities to works in painting. As an artist I enjoyed making the project and hoped it was appreciated by others in interesting ways.
Final Project Proposal Post
Processes: coiling, sewing, painting
For my final project I plan to make a series of sculptures based on the form of my first project by using wood and coiling. The sculptures will be coiled together and produced through a similar process through which the first project was inspired. In relation to the work of my artist, I chose to integrate a new material and combine wood with yarn. Her use of wood in all her pieces were in novel ways which emphasized structure. I’d like to try to make a form using linear structure to emphasize organic qualities.
The work by Dianna Molzan I chose was one which I liked the most. It is a structural canvas on a frame which was made to jut out in such a way to create an illusion. Meant to appear as if it is arranged effortlessly, the canvas is complex in the back and configured in a mechanical manner. Dianna was interested in the illusionism in the appearance of things and it produced some questions and ideas. I could work them into my project but might not. In addition, she also painted on many of her deconstructed works so I am considering painting the finished pieces.
