Contessina & Cosimo || Comatose [+1x06]
(via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XomGdlvKgCA)
I k n o w what you did for me Contessina.
guys, I feel pain for Contessina. I know I will have to suffer when heâs gonna cheat on her with Maddalena. Itâs not even possible I already have a ship.
these scars run deep
so iâm totally obsessed with contessina and cosimo so i wrote 1.4k of angst and then made this side-blog to post it on. also, heads up that in this fic, cosimoâs banishment has been lifted and so he can return to florence i guess (just go with it). totally not historically accurate and this is the first thing that came to my mind after watching 1x04 so i hope itâs not too terrible.
He arrives when she least expects him to. Sheâs in the middle of combing her hair, almost ready for bed, when her bedroom door opens. She grabs a dagger hidden inside a drawer of her dresser, whipping around to face whoever it is that dare enter her chamber so late in the night. When she sees him, the dagger drops from her hand, barely missing her foot. His beard is thicker, and thereâs a bit more grey in his hair than there was when he left but other than those two things, he looks almost the same. Tired, but the same. He watches her, eyes moving from her face to her torso and then to her feet.
âI was not expecting you,â are the first words out of her mouth and the instant she says them, she wishes she could take them back. The words have little weight and there is no warmth in her voice. Cosimo does not seem to care, though. Heâs still watching her, and she shifts on her feet, a flush creeping up her neck. Itâs mad, to still feel awkward around him when sheâs been married to him for so long. But her and Cosimoâs relationship has always been strained, even in their most happiest moments together, sheâs struggled to fully express how she feels.
âI had to come back, to attend to something urgent. I thought I would check in to see how you were doing,â he says finally and she realises just then, how badly sheâs missed his voice. They never spoke often, when they lived together, but his voice, after so many years of marriage, was like an anchor to her, grounding her.
âThatâs very thoughtful of you,â she says. After a pause she adds, âYou must be hungry. Let me get you something to eat.â
Cosimo nods, moving to the side so she can lead the way to their dining room. Itâs a bit foolish for him to wait for her to lead, since he knows this house like the back of his palm, but Contessina merely grabs her robe and secures it around her body before walking towards the kitchen. The kitchen ladies have long gone, so she takes a plate and cuts a loaf of bread, spreading preserves on one side. She cuts a block of cheese, and washes a basket of fruit all whilst wondering what exactly sheâs supposed to say to him. When she goes to the dining room, Cosimo is already seated at his usual place, a goblet of wine in one hand. She sets the plate down in front of him, and sits opposite him, on the other side of the table.
âHow is it there?â she asks after a pregnant pause. âHow is everybody?â
Cosimo has just finished chewing a piece of bread, goblet half-way to his mouth. He sets the glass down, visibly swallowing before looking up at her. His eyes are still so blue, just as blue as they were twenty years ago. They remind her of a dress she had when she was a little girl.
âThey are well. Lucrezia is doing much better. Pierro and her miss you dearly,â he replies. She nods, at a loss of words. There is a spark of anger that ignites in her gut. She could have been there right now, with her son, with her daughter-in-law, even with Cosimo. But she is here instead. Alone.
They are silent again for a handful of minutes, before Contessina speaks.
âWhy are you here?â she questions. He looks up at her again, a glint appearing in his eyes.
âI told you, I had business here. I thought I would check in on you,â he says easily. But his mouth twitches slightly and she knows heâs lying.
âWeâve been married for two decades, Cosimo. You cannot lie to me,â she responds. He grins then, his smile angry and warm all at once.
âHow have you been keeping busy?â he questions, changing the subject so easily.
âThere is a lot of work to do here,â she returns. âAnd you?â
âThere is a lot of work to do there, as well,â he replies.
Neither of them asks what they truly want to know, whether thereâs been somebody else thatâs warmed the othersâ bed. She knows there probably has been. Knows that even if Cosimo loves her, which she is fairly sure he does, it is layered with anger and guilt. She is a constant reminder of his lack of freedom, of the fact that his parents destroyed his choice to do what he wanted. She loves him too, almost so much that it angers her sometimes, how much she cares. But her love has been unused for so long that she does not know how to express it.
âI hope the food is to your liking,â she says. Her fingers twist in her lap, unsure of what else to say.
âIt is fine,â he assures her and the edge in his tone that was there previously is gone. His voice isnât soft but itâs no longer angry either. âI have missed you.â
The second part of his sentence comes out quietly, and Contessina is unsure that she has even heard correctly until she looks at him to find him watching her carefully. His eyes are darker now, and his jaw is clenched almost as if he is nervous. Her mouth opens and then closes. She swallows before responding.
âYou chose to leave me,â she says and his jaw clenches even more.
âI was angry,â he says, and his tone is guarded again.
âI did what I did, for you, Cosimo,â she says, and she is standing up now. The anger in her veins burns, igniting years of frustration. âI have always done what I had to do, for you.â
He stands up too now, hands pulled into fists at his side.
âWhat you did was for you, you acted on emotion. It was selfish. The family suffered ââ
Before he can finish, Contessina is storming towards his end of the table.
âThe family would have suffered anyway. If you had died Cosimo, we would have been worse off. You think Lorenzo could have saved us if you were gone?â she spits, her voice loud and angry. âYou did not even let me explain!â
Cosimo closes his eyes, taking in a deep breath. âI know, now,â he says after a pause. âI know now. Iâm sorry.â
His voice cracks at the end, and he sounds desperate. Desperate for forgiveness or desperate for her to not yell, she is not sure. But he looks so wary and so tired, that she cannot help step towards him. He lifts his hand, and she takes it in her grip. His fingers are calloused, rough from all the sketching he used to do. His palm is warm and she can feel the thrum of his pulse at his wrist. His other arm comes around her waist, pulling her flush against him. His forehead is against hers and he takes another deep breath, almost as if heâs breathing her in.
âIâm sorry,â he repeats and the grip on her waist tightens. She nods, pressing closer.
âI have missed you too,â she says when his breath has evened out. His eyes blink open and he nudges her nose with his, before kissing her. It has been so long since theyâve done this that at first, Contessina isnât sure how to respond. But then, his hands move from her waist to her head, cupping it. The rasp of his beard against her face sends a warm tingle through her body and she grips his shirt, pulling him closer. He lets out a groan, before heâs pushing away although he doesnât move far. He rests his forehead against hers, again, eyes already growing darker. He presses a kiss to her forehead, before he moves away.
âWe must sleep. I do actually have to meet somebody tomorrow,â he says and she nods. He takes her hand, ushering for her to lead the way, as he follows with a steady hand on her waist. The heat from his hand seeps through her robe and her night gown, warming up her body almost instantly.
âWill you be staying her while you complete your work?â she asks, as they walk towards their chamber.
âIf youâll let me,â he says and she smiles.
âWell I would not mind if you did,â she responds, and he presses a kiss to her hair. She turns to smile at him, and he smiles back.
cosimo & contessina; unspoken
âI value youâ is the new âI love youâ
trust Florence, trust me
Do you ship contessina and cosimo? I really do but I wish cosimo realised how much contessina does for him
I ship them so hard and I canât believe I got only 8 episodes to watch with these two.
Whoever reads this and loves Cosimo, please keep reading. Iâm not insulting him and you might be interested in what Iâve written.
God Cosimo. Where do I even begin with him? I hate him and I love him, Iâm so bipolar when it comes to him, maybe because I love Richard and I donât want to despise so much a character he plays, but tbh I ship him with Contessina, so I know that deep down I love him. I just donât understand him, especially in these weekâs episodes, his behavior was hard to watch and to comprehend.Â
His character is soâŠgrey. Heâs not a bad person, but heâs not a saint. I think the writers have made pretty clear thereâs no good and bad in this story, Cosimo himself does pretty bad actions to achieve the greater good. Every House, from DeâMedici to Albizzi, acts for its own reasons, for its own ends and itâs quite difficult to get whoâs on the good side, because thereâs no good or bad side in the story. Who didnât feel a little bit of sympathy for Rinaldo at the end?
Most of us felt like Cosimo became a sort of enemy because of he did in Venice, for cheating on Contessina, for bringing his lover to Florence without giving a damn about Contessinaâs feelings. I got so mad when he truly thought he didnât have to give any explanation to Contessina, even Lorenzo was thinking about what Cosimo would tell her! Everyone felt so uncomfortable in that situation, only Cosimo couldnât see and you know why? because anger still blinded him.Â
He was back from the exile after a year and he was still infuriated with her. Cosimo, who of all people is able of great forgiveness and sympathy, cannot find the strength to âforgiveâ his wife for saving him or, as he puts it, for sending him into exile. Why can he forgive everyone and not her? I think the only explanation is that Contessina is his most trusted person by his side and being âbetrayedâ by the person you trust the most in life, itâs like a stab in your heart and consequently this person becomes the most difficult to forgive. In this act, Iâve finally found what Contessina really means to Cosimo, Everyone can clearly see he truly, deeply loves her, despite his huge lack of communication. Â
Though back then it was normal to let the lovers live under the same roof, Iâm not condoning his behavior, certainly I donât excuse him for being ungrateful for everything that Contessina ever did in her life for the sake of the family, even sending him into exile was a way to preserve the family, yet he doesnât realize it.
At the end, he forgives her and holds her hand. Itâs not a tiny gesture to overlook, because itâs not through words, but through gestures that we understand what Cosimo feels and that pictures how he desperately needs Contessina in his life, more than anyone else.
(What would you do if I died today?
Iâd die tomorrow.)
