Dengeki Bunko x niconico new Media Mix project, featuring Kino no Tabi cast

Apparently this is a “Majority rule Drama” project in which we will have a drama on niconico live broadcast with a new story named “Land of Ruins” (with illustrations done by Kouhaku Kuroboshi). The special points are that niconico users will get to decide the direction of the story through a questionnaire feature, and the drama will be voiced by professional voice actors.

Was watching the latter half of Railgun S (episode 43) and was surprised to see Saten was reading Kino no Tabi! Kino no Tabi/Kino’s Journey is a light novel series by Keiichi Sigsawa, illustrated by Kohaku Kuroboshi. It follows Kino as she travels from one interesting place to the next with her talking motorrad, Hermes. I wasn’t able to find which volume the illustration is from, but my sister was guessing it lines up with volume 8. In the words of said sister, good taste, Saten!

I know the story! This one wasn’t part of the main light novel series, that’s why. This was an extra chapter from one of the booklets. Despite this fact, it’s one of the most famous Kino’s Journey stories and this illustration of Kino spinning, with arms spread out, in the middle of an empty city with buildings towering over her, has been redrawn and referenced again and again by fans. 

Its name is  “The Country of Memories ―Their Memories.” A fan has graciously translated it here!

I like to think that, despite living such a dangerous life, Kino will die in a rather mundane manner after all luck is expended (but it was a fortunate life, nothing to regret). Certainly not through any violent act and not in any particular country, maybe en route or just on the border of one. Kino might just collapse from exhaustion somewhere, maybe in a desert, and quietly become covered with sand, while Hermes silently gathers dust. Maybe no one will ever find either of them. Or maybe someone does, but it’s already too late for Kino, so Hermes says nothing. Human and motorrad disappear under sheets of sand.

… until the rain comes three days later and washes it all away.

The rains come, the winds come– rain and wind steadily work away in tandem, separately yet together. What was once motorrad and human, thanks to the carelessly thorough attention of the changing weather, is eventually welcomed into the sand as part of its own. What was once motorrad and traveler, along with everything they ever needed to take.
