To the American student: As another American who was recently on exchange in Scotland, some food I would consider different but quite delicious includes: pies/pasties, jacket potatoes, toasties, and oat cakes. Eat as many Cadbury products as you can afford- everything is delightful and there are even Cadbury snack cakes and hot chocolate. I'm also now addicted to McVitie's dark chocolate digestives. I loved to just try new things I found in the store to see what they tasted like.
Could I send in a few photos I have of Campbeltown?
yeah course.
Hi! Just saw the ask about St Andrews, and thought I'd throw my two cents in:) If they do go to Anstruther, there's a boat going out to the Isle of May; it's very pretty there and it's a great opportunity to see a lot of local wildlife. Tentsmuir is also quite close, beautiful forest and beach. And definitely visit the aquarium at St A, it's great fun!
Thanks!

Inverness, Highlands- Scotland. Inverness is incredibly beautiful. Captured River Ness and the Inverness Castle. Inverness does like to attract tourist. So pretty.
Scotland, it’s been a blast. Roll on the Six Nations! 🏉 #scotland #autumninternationals #backingblue #asone

Hi! I saw the ask from the American student, and I thought I could help in regards to the question about St Andrews? There are quite a few things to visit there, there's a sea life centre, a castle and a cathedral, as well as the beach. Ansturther is another lovely sea side town nearby too, and well worth a visit. St Andrews also has quite a few nice cafes and bars, so there are plenty of places to eat :) All in all, it's very quaint, and it's not that far from Edinburgh too :)
Thanks. :) More St Andrews info.
OK so first thank you for answering these. Basically, I am going to be attending a summer program at St. Andrew's (if I get in) so I want to know some stuff about Scotland. 1. What are popular snacks and drinks there? 2. What are popular shops? 3. What is near St. Andrew's? Like what shops or landmarks. 4. What do Scottish people hate when Americans do? 5. What is some slang that means something different in the USA? Thank you again!!!
No problem. 1. I guess irn bru is out national fizzy drink. It's bright orange you can't miss it and I can't describe what it tastes like because there's nothing else really like it. As for snacks i'm not really sure. I guess all the normal things you'd expect. Tablet is specifically scottish but it's not like we eat only that. It's basically a big chunk of sugar. I'm not sure how they make it but i'm sure you'll find a bar of it in the tourist shops. Would haggis count as a snack? Not really but it's food and it's something you've gotta try once especially since it's illegal in the states for some reason.
I've never actually been to St Andrews so I have no clue what kind of shops you're gonna find up there. As far as i'm aware it's a bit of a tourist spot. The university is famous and one of the best in the Uk. I think it's where the royal family get their degrees. The Uni itself will be a landmark because the buildings are so old. They'll have loads of history.
I guess British people can find Americans to be a bit obnoxious and in your face. Obviously they're not all like that and not all Brits are toned down. But I think that's where it mostly stems from. I'm sure you'll have nothing to worry about though. Scots are genuinely the most friendly people so don't hesitate to speak to people.
I can't think of many. I guess pants means underwear over here. Chips are crisps, and fries are chips. So if you ask for a bag of chips you're gonna get chunky fries. Wee means small. I had a new friend tell me recently that when he came over he had no idea what people were asking for when they said a wee something. There are so many words in the Scots language that you'll have never heard before. Not everyone uses them, it usually depends on the area you're in. I'm in the south in edinburgh so the accents are easy going but the further north you go the thicker they get and the more use of Scots you find.
