Son of Sam with now deceased serial killer, Gary Evans.
Facts about David Berkowitz
Killed six people and wounded seven others in New York City between 1976 and 1977.
Most of the victims were young women or couples in cars on secluded streets.
Claimed a demon spoke to him through a neighbor’s dog.
Called himself the “Son of Sam” in letters he wrote to newspaper columnist Jimmy Breslin.
He once worked as an auxiliary policeman in the Bronx.
He confessed to the murders in 1977 and is serving six consecutive 25-years-to-life sentences.
Frank Gust
Between 1994 and 1998, German murderer Frank Gust killed 4 women - two of them prostitutes, one aunt who’s body has never been found, and a South African backpacker in the Netherlands. He would shoot them, disgrace their corpses by slashing and disembowelment, and leave them in provocative poses along roads. Two had been decapitated, and all were missing hands.
Gust was as a youngster, subject by various forms of violence, including sodomy by pedophiles.
As a ten year old, he was in full swing of killing animals, first small but eventually progressing to the murder of a horse, fullfilling his many death fantasies. He would also as a teenager break into mortuaries to disgrace the corpses he found there.
At the age of 25, in April 1994, he murdered his first woman, a 28 year old South African hitchhiking through the Netherlands.
In 1996 and again in 1998 he killed two prostitutes. Both were found disemboweled, without hands and head. The 1998 killing was particularly brutal, as he had bound the girl to a tree and tortured her for a prolonged amount of time. One breast was cut off before death.
In April 1998 his wife’s aunt disappeared and was never to be found again.
He was arrested in 1999, and in September 2000 sentenced to life in jail.
From his cell, he writes his mother Dagmar Eichhorn a letter about once a week.
In one of these, he wrote:
”The principle of getting a second chance, is a very good one. But there should be limits to it.
I know one thing essentially deeper than all others: whomever has killed out of sexual gratification, will always have this ability within him. I am certain, that when the possibility arises, a lustkiller will always strike again.”
Gust however, has changed his mind on this matter since he began a correspondence with a woman and they apparently fell in love. If he gets his way, he could be released by 2020.
His mother is lobbying to have him never out again, and uses the afforementioned letter for this cause.
Dr. Michael Stone’s Scale of Evil
Dr. Michael Stone has created a scale he calls Scale of evil. The scale stretches from 1 to 22 and Dr. Michael Stone places each and every serial killer on this scale all depending on how evil they are.
Level 1 “Those who kill in self defense and do not show psychopathic tendencies.” Level 2. “Jealous lovers who, though egocentric or immature, are not psychopathic; crime passional” Level 3 “Willing companions of killers: aberrant personality—probably impulse-ridden, with some antisocial traits” Level 4 “Those who kill in self-defense, after extremely provocative behavior toward the victim” Level 4 “Highly narcissistic, but not distinctly psychopathic persons, with a psychotic core, who kill loved ones or family members out of jealousy” Level 5 “Traumatize, desperate people who kill abusive relatives and others.(like to support a drug habit)” but lack significant traits. Genuinely remorseful.” Level 6 “Impetuous hotheaded murderers without psychopatic features.” Level 7 “Highly narrsasistic , but not distinctly psychopathic people.” with a psychotic core, who kill those close to them. Jealously is an underlying motive. Level 8 “Non psychopathic people with smoldering rage who kill when that rage is ignited.” Level 9 “Jealous lovers with marked psychopathic features” Level 10 “Killers of people who where in the way or killed for example witnesses.(egocentric but not distinctly psychopathic)” Level 11 “Psychopathic killers of people in the way.” Level 12 “Power-hungry psychopaths who kill when cornered.” Level 13 “Murderers with inadequate, rageful personalities and psychopathic features Level 14 “Ruthlessly self-centered psychopathic schemers” Level 15 “Psychopathic or cold blooded spree killers mulitple murders.” Level 16 “Psychopaths committing multiple vicious acts.” Level 17 “Sexually perverse serial murderers Torture-murderers. Murder is the primary motive, following prolonged torture(amoung the males rape is the primary motive with murder to hide the evidence. Systematic torture is not a primary factor”. Level 18 “Torture murderers with murder the primary motive.” Level 19 “Psychopaths driven to terrorism, subjugation, intimidation, and rape, but short of murder.” Level 20 “Torture murderers with torture as the primary motive but in psychopathic personalities.” Level 21 “Psyhcopaths preoccupied with torture in the extreme, but not known to have commited murder.” Level 22 “Psychopathic, serial torture-murderers, with torture the primary motive.”
“I couldn’t find any meaning in my life when I was out there. I’m sure as hell not going to find it in here. This is the grand finale of a life poorly spent and the end result is just overwhelmingly depressing … it’s just a sick, pathetic, wretched, miserable life story, that’s all it is. How it can help anyone, I’ve no idea.”
-Jeffrey Dahmer
In the words of a doctor who treated Albert Fish, “There was no known perversion which he did not practice and practice frequently”. Indeed, Fish could be described as everything evil, compacted and rolled into a bundle.
Fish was born in Washington, D.C. in 1870. By the age of five he was abandoned after the death of his father, and spent the majority of the rest of his childhood in an orphanage. Managing to carve out a life that seemed somwhat normal, Fish married in 1898 and fathered six children. His eccentric and perverted behavior evidently lay beneath the surface of a normal family man until his wife left him for another man in 1917. Alone and faced with the responsibility of caring for his children alone, his true self began to emerge. Reportedly, he occasionally would screm into the sky “I am Christ!” and forced his own children to paddle him until he bled. Later on, living with his grown son Albert Jr., he admitted that he used the nail-studded paddles his boy found in his father’s room on himself, citing the need to torture himself. He also collected literature on cannabilism and other bizarre subjects. Fish took to answering ads placed in the newspapers by single women, though definitely not in the fashion they desired. He wrote the ladies back with obscene proposals, which included having them paddle him. Just this sort of behavior landed Fish in minor trouble with the law, but he was largely regarded as just a nuisance. Nobody imagined that he was a sadistic killer until 1928. On June 3 of that year Fish took 12-year-old Grace Budd to his isolated cottage in White Plains, New York from her home in New York City. Once there he strangled the helpless girl, decapitated her and used a saw to cut her in half. He ate bits of her flesh in a stew later and drank some of the girl’s blood. The Budd’s, who allowed their daughter to go to a fictitious birthday party with the killer they knew as Frank Howard, never heard anything about their daughter until Fish inexplicably sent them a letter telling them he had killed their daughter, adding that he “didn’t fuck with her” and that she died a virgin. An address that Fish had not erased well enough on the back of the letter’s envelope led police to the old man and the child killer was immediately arrested. Because of the passage of time and lack of follow up that is customary nowadays, it is uncertain exactly what killings Fish actually confessed to while in custody. He evidently laid some claim to a few killings including the 1910 killing of a man in Delaware, the torture and mutilation death of a retarded boy in 1919,and the killing of a twelve-year-old boy in 1917. He alluded to many others but his confessions were never truly verified and he himself admitted his memory had deteriorated in his last few years. He reportedly admitted to the molestation of approximately 400 children, and incredibly horrifying number if true. Charged with murder in the Budd killing, Fish’s lawyers predictably pursued an insanity defense in his 1935 trial. Just as predictably, it did not succeed and the child killer was sentenced to die in the electric chair at Sing Sing. The aging sadist looked forward to the chair, saying it was the untimate thrill and the only one he hadn’t tried. On January 16, 1936, Fish got his wish, but not without some added drama. One of his many perversions was to shove needles into the flesh between his testicles and anus. Quite often the needles went too far in and became lodged. Hundreds of tiny needles remained stuck in the man’s body at the time of his electrocution and they short-circuited the first electrocution attempt leaving Fish charred, but alive. It took a second massive current to send this monster to his grave.
Mugshots of America’s most notorious serial killers.
Jeffrey Dahmer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 21, 1960. The son of a chemist, Dahmer should have had a normal life. But his childhood in Bath, Ohio, where he and his family moved in 1968, was marked by a growing obsession with severe cruelty to animals, bizarre behavior, and alcoholism.
It was in Bath that Dahmer began to kill. Alone in the family home after his parents divorced in 1978, he picked up hitchhiker Steven Hicks, bludgeoned and strangled him, smashing his bones with a sledgehammer and scattering them in the woods behind his home. He apparently kept his murderous impulses under control until September 15, 1987. Living with his grandmother back in Milwaukee, Dahmer killed Steven Tuomi and set off what would become one of the world’s most gruesome serial murders. Dahmer eventually took the lives of seventeen men including the sad case of Konerak Synthasomphone, who escaped from the killer only to be mistakenly handed back by police who believed the two were homosexual lovers having a quarrel. Ironically, Konerak’s older brother also escaped form Dahmer three years earlier. The attack had jailed Dahmer for ten months in work release. Dahmer was finally apprehended on July 22, 1991. Tracy Edwards escaped the murderer’s tiny Milwaukee apartment and flagged down a police car nearby. The officers went to Dahmer’s apartment where they were denied entry and after wrestling Dahmer down and cuffing him they took a look around. What they found was incredible. Human heads and skulls were stashed in the refrigerator and pictures of dismembered bodies littered the bedroom. Dahmer was arrested and a media explosion hit Milwaukee. No one had even had a clue a serial killer was at work until his arrest. Dahmer confessed readily and went to trial pleading guilty but insane. The trial was stock full of gruesome details of cannabalism and necrophilia, with police and the defense attorney telling of how Dahmer drilled holes in some of his victims heads and poured acid into their skulls while they were still alive. He wanted zombies that could not resist and could not leave him. Found sane by a jury Dahmer was sentenced to 15 life terms in the Colombia Correctional Institution. Originally ordered into solitary for his own protection, he talked his way into a unit for prisoners with emotional problems after just a year. On Novemeber 28th, 1993, Dahmer was killed by on the the unit’s other inmates.

Andrei Chikatilo
He was born in 1936 into a small Ukrainian village and his head was misshapen from water on the brain. He had a sister seven years younger. His father was a POW in WWII and then was sent to a prison camp in Russia, so his mother raised him mostly on her own.
In the HBO documentary, “Cannibal” and in Moira Martingale’s book Cannibal Killers, some of Chikatilo’s background is described in a chilling context as a way to try to understand what drove him into such a bestial frenzy. In fact, Martingale sees a direct connection between those times and Chikatilo’s sexual fantasies. He was like a werewolf, changing into a ravaging animal when triggered in just the right way. Much of this information came from the confession, the assessments done later, and from investigative research.
During the early part of the 20th century, the former Soviet Union was often subjected to famines, especially in the Ukraine after Stalin crushed out private agriculture and sent many citizens to the Siberian Gulag. Some six million people died of starvation, according to Cullen, and desperate people might remove meat from corpses to survive. Sometimes they went to a cemetery, where corpses were stacked, and sometimes (legend has it) they grabbed someone on the street. Human flesh was bought and sold, or just hoarded.
Children saw disfigured corpses and heard terrible tales of hardship. Chikatilo had grown up during several of these famines and one story that his mother told was how he once had had an older brother, Stepan, who had been killed. In a prison interview, he said, “Many people went crazy, attacked people, ate people. So they caught my brother, who was ten, and ate him.” He might simply have died and been consumed, if he even existed (which could not be corroborated in any records), but Chikatilo’s mother would warn him to stay in the yard or he might get eaten as well. It was a scary idea, but titillating.
He also saw the results of Nazi occupation and of German bombing, with bodies blown up in the streets. He said that they frightened and excited him.
Most of his childhood was spent alone, living in his fantasies. Other children mocked him for his awkwardness and sensitivity. He began to develop anger at this age, even rage. To entertain and empower himself, he devised images of torture, and these remained a fixed part of his killings later in life.
He had his first sexual experience as an adolescent when he struggled with a ten-year-old friend of his sister’s and ejaculated. That impressed itself on him, especially as he went along in life unable to get an erection but able to ejaculate. The struggle became as fixed in his mind as the images of torture.
He went into the army but when he came home and tried to have a girlfriend, he found he was still unable to perform the sexual act. The girl spread this around, humiliating him, and he dreamed about catching her and tearing her to pieces. His life, as far as he could see, was now a disaster.
He became a schoolteacher and did get married (which was arranged by his sister), but could only conceive children, according to the HBO documentary, by ejaculating outside his wife and pushing his semen inside by hand. Much like his mother, his wife was critical, which only made Chikatilo withdraw even further into his fantasy world. His mother died in 1973 when he was 37, and it wasn’t long before he found himself attracted to young girls and began to molest them. It made him feel powerful, and when incidents were reported, they were met with cover-up and denial instead of prosecution, allowing a pervert to become a killer.
For true satisfaction, he needed to get violent, and by 1978, he killed his first victim. Since he was on the road quite often as a parts supply liaison, it became easy to find vulnerable strangers, dominate them and murder them. He didn’t have to go looking for them, he said. They were always right there and they were usually willing to follow him. He had read the newspaper reports about the murders when the press was allowed to print them and had known it was only a matter of time before it would all end. Being arrested, he admitted, was a relief.
Chikatilo believed he suffered from an illness that provoked his uncontrollable transgressions. He wanted to see some specialists in sexual deviance, and said that he would answer all questions.
He was sent to Moscow’s Serbsky Institute for two months for psychiatric and neurological assessment, and it was determined that he had brain damage from birth. It had affected his ability to control his bladder and his seminal emissions. His mother criticized him for it repeatedly, and was often cruel. He had deviant fantasies. However, after all the reports, he was found to be sane. He knew what he was doing and he could have controlled it.

Arthur Shawcross (born June 6, 1945) is an American serial killer, also known as The Genesee River Killer. He claimed most of his victims after being paroled early following a conviction for murdering a child. He was born in Maine, but the family moved to Watertown in New York State when he was young. Shawcross dropped out of school in the ninth grade, and when he was 19 he enlisted in the army. He fought in the Vietnam War where he was to later confess he had murdered and cannibalized two young Vietnamese girls, although there is nothing to back up this claim.
Back in civilian life, living in Watertown once more, Shawcross married four times, but his wives invariably left him after a short time because of his violent and erratic behavior. It was there, in May 1972, that he murdered 10-year-old Jake Blake. He lured the boy to some woods where he assaulted and strangled him. Four months later, he raped and killed an eight-year-old girl named Karen Ann Hill. Arrested for these crimes, Shawcross confessed to both murders but was later able to obtain a plea bargain with the prosecutors. He would plead guilty to killing just Karen Ann Hill on a charge of manslaughter, instead of first-degree murder, and the charge of killing Jake Blake would be dropped. With little evidence to go on, prosecutors went along with this, and the self-confessed double child killer was given a 25-year sentence. Shawcross served 15 years before he was released on parole in March 1987. He had difficulty settling down as he was chased out of homes and fired from workplaces as soon as neighbors and employers found out about his criminal record. Eventually he settled in Rochester, New York, and lived with a woman named Clara. Starting in March 1988, Shawcross began murdering prostitutes in the area, claiming 11 victims before his capture less than two years later. They were usually strangled and battered to death, and were often mutilated as well. After the last victim’s body was found in January 1990, the police decided not to remove it and instead keep surveillance on the area, based on a psychological profile that suggested the killer would return to the scene. Shawcross was spotted masturbating as he sat in his car on a bridge over the creek in which the body of his final victim was floating. He was arrested and eventually confessed in custody.
What makes a serial killer?
In the past thirty years, multiple definitions of serial murder have been used by law enforcement, clinicians, academia, and researchers. While these definitions do share several common themes, they differ on specific requirements, such as the number of murders involved, the types of motivation, and the temporal aspects of the murders. To address these discrepancies, attendees at the Serial Murder Symposium examined the variations in order to develop a single definition for serial murder.
Previous definitions of serial murder specified a certain number of murders, varying from two to ten victims. This quantitative requirement distinguished a serial murder from other categories of murder (i.e. single, double, or triple murder).
Most of the definitions also required a period of time between the murders. This break-in-time was necessary to distinguish between a mass murder and a serial murder. Serial murder required a temporal separation between the different murders, which was described as: separate occasions, cooling-off period, and emotional cooling-off period.
Generally, mass murder was described as a number of murders (four or more) occurring during the same incident, with no distinctive time period between the murders. These events typically involved a single location, where the killer murdered a number of victims in an ongoing incident (e.g. the 1984 San Ysidro McDonalds incident in San Diego, California; the 1991 Luby’s Restaurant massacre in Killeen, Texas; and the 2007 Virginia Tech murders in Blacksburg, Virginia).
There has been at least one attempt to formalize a definition of serial murder through legislation. In 1998, a federal law was passed by the United States Congress, titled: Protection of Children from Sexual Predator Act of 1998 (Title 18, United States Code, Chapter 51, and Section 1111). This law includes a definition of serial killings:
The term ‘serial killings’ means a series of three or more killings, not less than one of which was committed within the United States, having common characteristics such as to suggest the reasonable possibility that the crimes were committed by the same actor or actors.
Although the federal law provides a definition of serial murder, it is limited in its application. The purpose of this definition was to set forth criteria establishing when the FBI could assist local law enforcement agencies with their investigation of serial murder cases. It was not intended to be a generic definition for serial murder.
The Symposium attendees reviewed the previous definitions and extensively discussed the pros and cons of the numerous variations. The consensus of the Symposium attendees was to create a simple but broad definition, designed for use primarily by law enforcement.
One discussion topic focused on the determination of the number of murders that constituted a serial murder. Academicians and researchers were interested in establishing a specific number of murders, to allow clear inclusion criteria for their research on serial killers. However, since the definition was to be utilized by law enforcement, a lower number of victims would allow law enforcement more flexibility in committing resources to a potential serial murder investigation.
Motivation was another central element discussed in various definitions; however, attendees felt motivation did not belong in a general definition, as it would make the definition overly complex.
The validity of spree murder as a separate category was discussed at great length. The general definition of spree murder is two or more murders committed by an offender or offenders, without a cooling-off period. According to the definition, the lack of a cooling-off period marks the difference between a spree murder and a serial murder. Central to the discussion was the definitional problems relating to the concept of a cooling-off period. Because it creates arbitrary guidelines, the confusion surrounding this concept led the majority of attendees to advocate disregarding the use of spree murder as a separate category. The designation does not provide any real benefit for use by law enforcement.
The different discussion groups at the Symposium agreed on a number of similar factors to be included in a definition. These included:
• one or more offenders • two or more murdered victims • incidents should be occurring in separate events, at different times • the time period between murders separates serial murder from mass murder
In combining the various ideas put forth at the Symposium, the following definition was crafted:
Serial Murder: The unlawful killing of two or more victims by the same offender(s), in separate events.
William Suff also known as the Riverside Prostitute Killer and the Lake Elsinore Killer, is a Californian serial killer. In 1974, Suff and his then-wife were convicted of beating their two-month-old daughter to death in Texas. Although he was sentenced to 70 years in prison, he was released on parole in 1984. He subsequently raped, stabbed, strangled and sometimes mutilated 12 or more prostitutes in Riverside County, beginning in 1986. On January 9, 1993, he was arrested after a routine traffic stop.
Described as a mild mannered loner, Suff worked as a county stock clerk who delivered supplies to the task force investigating his killing spree. He liked to impersonate police officers and even cooked chili at office picnics. In fact, it is alleged that he used the breast of one of his victims in his chili, which won the “Riverside County Employee Chili Cookoff.” He was also working on a book about wild, lethal dogs. He enjoyed vanity plates and was an avid volunteer in the county’s car-pooling program.
On July 19, 1995, Suff was found guilty of killing 12 prostitutes, although police think that he might be responsible for up to 22 deaths. On November 1995, he was condemned to death.
The Mauerovas are a family of cult members and cannibals from the Czech Republic. Over an 8 month period, relatives and fellow cult members participated in despicable acts against two brothers. The actual details of what a mother allowed to be done to her young children are extremely disturbing. By a remarkable chain of events, the truth about the Maurova family was discovered on May 10, 2007 when horrific images on a baby monitor (which they had installed in their house to view the crimes) where picked up by a neighbor who had the exact same monitor. A total of six people were eventually convicted.

Bundy never made a comprehensive confession of his crimes and his true total is not known, but before his execution, he confessed thirty murders to Bill Hagmaier. Thug Behram, of the Indian Thuggee cult, has frequently been said to be the world’s most prolific serial killer. According to numerous sources, he was believed to have murdered 931 victims by strangulation by means of a ceremonial cloth (or rumal, which in Hindi means handkerchief), used by his cult between 1790-1830.
Attribution of so many killings to this one murderer is, however, the product of confusion and mistaken reporting of unchecked statements. The original source for Behram’s ‘confession’ is a manuscript on Thuggee written by James Paton, an East India Company officer working for the Thuggee and Dacoity Office in the 1830s. Paton’s MS - now in the British Library - states that Behram had merely estimated that he had “been present” at 931 cases of murder, the killings themselves being committed by a gang of 25 to 50 men, at least half a dozen of whom, other than Behram himself, would have played an active role as stranglers.
In addition, Behram’s statement is unverified and the Thug never stood trial for any of the murders he confessed to, having turned King’s Evidence and agreed to inform on his companions.
It should further be emphasised that this Thug gave a second, much less publicised, account, concerning the actual number of murders he committed. At another point in Paton’s papers, Behram is quoted as saying: “I may have strangled with my own hands about 125 men, and I may have seen strangled 150 more.”
Since Behram’s alleged murders were committed in the course of a 40-year career, and since it was in Thug informers’ interests to make themselves appear as important as possible to their British captors, it would be unwise to attribute any specific total of killings to this one murderer.
