Things were⦠weird. Not weird in that Amelia was uncomfortable ā no, not in the slightest, she could never feel uncomfortable around Levi ā but weird in the fact that there was this obvious, big, blaring thing weighing over the pair of them that wasnāt being acknowledged. When Levi had pointed out that it was Valentineās Day, Amelia had been surprised. Dates on the whole generally didnāt slip by her unnoticed, but her mind had been so busy, and sheād been so excited about possibly seeing Levi that it had entirely slipped her mind. So, in hindsight, asking Levi out on the most romantic day of the year probably laid a lot of implications out on the table before them.
And while Amelia definitely had an enormous crush on Levi, and wanted nothing more than to be her girlfriend, she wasnāt entirely sure the other girl felt the same. So, of course, the two of them were behaving as this was just a casual evening between two friends, hanging out just as they always did. And it was, and Amelia knew that, but the flutter in her chest and the reddening of her cheeks seemed to imply otherwise. All of that only meant that when Levi awkwardly greeted her, her own cheeks resembling the vibrant colour of her hair, Amelia found herself second guessing just what it could mean. Was she uncomfortable? Did she feel awkward about Amelia asking her to do something today of all days? Or was she excited, like Amelia, at the prospect of spending Valentineās with someone that she cared so much about? As much as Amelia wanted Levi to reciprocate her feelings, she couldnāt possibly entertain the idea that someone as pretty and wonderful as Levi could possibly like someone as bland as herself.
āOh⦠You think so?ā Amelia responded, her ears burning a frightful red as her face broke out into a wide smile. Levi thought she looked nice? While she knew that she definitely didnāt look as pretty as Levi did, the comment did nothing but encourage the way her stomach flipped excitedly. āThank you so much, Levi!ā
Certain that Levi hadnāt meant anything by it, merely returning Ameliaās own compliment, she pushed forward and tried to ignore the jittery feelings surging through her. As they wandered into the restaurant, Amelia tugging nervously on her dress in an attempt to keep her hands busy ā she didnāt want to accidentally make an attempt to hold Leviās hand, and in turn ruin their night ā she stared around in awe at the pretty, twinkling lights, and the lovestruck couples that surrounded them. It was obvious that the restaurant had been decorated in favour of Valentineās Day, yet still remained fancy and pretty, as opposed to looking a little gaudy. The other customers filling out the tables all appeared to be so blissfully happy, and Amelia kept finding her own mind wandering away, as she guiltily pondered over what it would be like to hold Leviās hand, or to call the pretty redhead her girlfriend.
Nodding along absent-mindedly to Leviās comment, Amelia greeted their server with a warm smile, before watching the look of horror that coloured his features upon looking at Levi. Her heart sinking in her chest, Amelia acted without thinking ā her next move far more rash than anything sheād ever done in her life ā when she reached out a hand and pulled Leviās into her own, interlocking their fingers in the process. Turning to the girl beside her, she offered her a warm, encouraging smile, before staring up at the waiter, holding her breath all the while.
āTable for two, please?ā she asked, keeping her tone as sweet as possible.
As the man turned on his heels, her hold on Leviās hand didnāt waver once as the two of them followed the waiter to their table. With menus having been placed onto their table, and the waiter finally having retreated and finally out of earshot, Amelia turned to Levi, her cheeks an alarming shade of red.
āIām really sorry!ā she apologised, keeping her voice low, her eyes nervously flitting back and forth between Levi and her shoes. Carefully dropping Leviās hand, she gestured to the table before taking a seat. āHe was⦠He was judging you!ā
She was certain that the look on the waiterās face hadnāt gone amiss to Levi, and Amelia certainly wasnāt a stranger to the way that people could be so unkind, their judgements and cruel, mocking words having always stung. She probably shouldnāt have pointed it out though, as she was sure it wasnāt something that either of them would want to think about. They were just having to have a nice evening, after all.
āAre you hungry?ā Amelia asked, nervously tapping on the menu in front of her. With a quick glance around her, taking in the loved up couples, all clad in expensive pearls and fancy dresses, she shut the menu and placed it back on the table. A glint in her eye, she glanced back up at Levi before emitting a soft giggle. āDo you want to leave? We could, if youād like. Thereās a McDonalds across the street from the movie theatre, if youād preferā¦ā
Cutting herself on, she dropped her hands into her lap to anxiously fret at the fabric of her dress once more. Amelia hadnāt ever liked McDonalds, always finding their burgers sickly, in addition to just how unhealthy and impractical it would be for her to indulge herself. Having said that, she wanted to have a nice night with Levi, and to take the girl somewhere that she liked, somewhere that she felt comfortable. She even found herself ever so slightly thrilled at the prospect of breaking her own rules, even if it meant she would have to put in extra hours after Mr Henshawās class on Tuesday.
āWe could get milkshakes, and we could be as loud as weād like!ā she giggled excitedly, ignoring a pointed glare that she was receiving from the couple on the table beside them.
The waiterās very obvious disdain for her get-up which lacked any lace, pearls, diamonds or obvious signs of wealth, was swiftly wiped from Leviās mind when she felt Amelia fumble for her hand. As her fingers were quickly interlocked with the brunetteās by her side, Levi stared down at their hands and knew her cheeks were burning. Why Amelia had grabbed her hand so insistently, Levi didnāt know, but she allowed the other girl to tug on her arm so she could dumbly trail after her to the table that the waiter gave them.
Although she was forced to drop Ameliaās hand when the two of them sat down, Levi couldnāt help but glance around the restaurant to see if anyone had noticed. Because if people had noticed then theyād probably think that she and Amelia looked like a couple and, as sappy and girly as the notion was, it caused a fizzle of excitement in Leviās belly.
Naturally, the only person watching them was the waiter who handed them their menus and looked like he was swallowing back all sorts of pained comments about the state of Leviās hoody, before he eventually walked away.
āHuh?ā Levi asked, dopily batting her eyelids at Amelia, still a little dazed after the whole hand-holding situation. When she caught the note of alarm in her friendās voice, she jumped to attention and waved dismissively.
āPuh!ā she shrugged. āHe was just being a jerkface. Iāve had worse from Louis and Joe.ā
She swallowed nervously when she looked at the prices on the menu, but after being raised by Joe who had failed to teach her the life skills she should be learning, instead she knew how to hook someone and not break her thumb and how a simple complaint about the undercooked state of her veal could land her a free dinner at a restaurant, no matter how fancy it was.
Glancing up at Ameliaās words, Levi nodded.
āIām always hungry!ā she grinned, her ravenous appetite having been proven impossible to satiate as she grew older and sought out food whenever she could. Joe had even put a lock on the fridge door at one point when the suspicious disappearance of twelve Pepperami sticks had ended up with the finger being pointed towards his little sister. But the lock hadnāt lasted long once Levi figured out how useful a crowbar could be with the right amount of elbow grease.
āHmm,ā she wrinkled her nose at Ameliaās suggestion. She did love McDonaldās, but the thought of slinking away from the posh restaurant with her tail between her legs didnāt sit right with her so she tilted her head to the side in consideration before deciding.
āNah,ā she said eventually. āI have a better idea.ā
Leaning down, she unzipped her backpack by her feet, rummaging through the various cans of silly string she had in there, mixed with a slinky, party poppers and fake plastic bugs, until her hand wrapped around the bottle she needed. As subtly as she could, Levi slid the fast-drying super glue into her pocket then sent Amelia a devious smirk.
āWait one minute,ā she instructed her friend before jumping up and speedily making her way towards the waiter who had sneered at her before.
āExcuse me, my dude,ā she called on him. She noticed him freeze a little before he attempted to feign ignorance, acting as if he hadnāt heard her. Annoyed, Levi reached forward and tugged at his sleeve so he was forced to tear his attention away from the drinks heād been pouring and towards her instead.
āYes?ā he asked her, his face pinched as he attempted to be polite.
āMan, someone upchucked in the bathroom. Thereās like, lobster chunks everywhere,ā she informed him, fashioning her features into one of disgust. Watching as the waiterās face paled considerably, she was happy to see him scurry away from the bar area and towards the toilets. As soon as heād disappeared, Levi pulled out the tube of glue and unscrewed the cap. With a precision she only seemed to be able to master when pulling off a prank, she lifted the glasses on the tray heād been attending to one by one, circling the bottom of each with a trail of glue before sticking them back onto the tray.
Hastily stuffing the bottle back into her pocket, Levi quickly made her way back to the table, sliding into her seat across from Amelia again.
āNow where were we?ā she asked, lifting the menu, but keeping an eye out for the waiterās return. āDo you think they sell chicken nuggets?ā

Levi: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU YOU LOOK LIKE A MONKEY (THAT'S BEEN BEATEN UP AND SAT ON BY ALL THE OTHER MONKEYS) AND YOU SMELL WORSE THAN ONE TOO
.akaamy:
Amelia was excited. Really excited, the most excited. She was perfectly sure that, should she be aware of the situation, Cassie might even tell her that it was all super duper exciting, and sheād have to agree. After her conversation with Levi, sheād slowly and steadily rounded the corner, before breaking into a sprint and making her way home. After approximately ten minutes of screaming and jumping with joy in her bedroom, sheād hopped into the shower, taking far too long to decide on an outfit ā longer than sheād ever taken ā before eventually deciding on a red dress with white spots! She was sure that red was Leviās favourite colour. Not that it mattered, as she was almost certain that it wasnāt a date, despite it being Valentineās Day, but even so.
After bounding excitedly into Carolineās apartment, sheād heard a chorus of voices belonging to Caroline, Jason, Tara, and Vivienne, all informing her that yes, it absolutely is a date. She wasnāt entirely sure if that made her more nervous, so she tried to push the thought to the back of her mind, entirely certain that Levi wasnāt thinking of it as such. They were friends, just friends, regardless of how Amelia might feel for the other girl. After some excited chatting with Caroline, Amelia had set off to meet Levi. It would have made sense to have met her in the lobby, she realised, but in all of her excitement and nervousness she hadnāt thought that through, and instead had told her that they could meet at the restaurant.
Not usually a forgetful person, nor particularly scatterbrained or clumsy in any capacity, Amelia found herself rather uncharacteristically flustered in the presence of Levi. The other girl made her had feel dizzy and her chest feel warm, and she found herself utterly baffled at her own idiocy upon having invited her out while simultaneously managing to forget it was Valentineās day. Not to mention that now she found herself wandering towards a sea of restaurants, excitement and nervousness fluttering away in her chest, with absolutely no recollection of what the restaurant was called.
Pouting to herself and tugging nervously on the hem of her dress, she found herself slowly immersed among crowds of people, all presumably couples on their way to some sort of romantic outing. Hopping up onto her tiptoes, she craned her neck before finally spotting Levi. Looking as pretty as she always did, her beautiful red hair framing her face, her cute freckles making Ameliaās cheeks blush, Amelia carefully wove her way through the crowds of people before approaching her, a nervous smile on her face.
āHiya, Levi!ā she greeted her from a short distance a way, lifting a hand into a tiny wave.
Her cheeks still perfectly red, she hoped that Levi would take no notice and that she didnāt look too ridiculous. Maybe she could blame it on the chill of the night, or being among such a large crowd of people. Perhaps not the latter, given that she so often spent her time surrounded by large sports teams or supporters.
āYou look pretty!ā she blurted, before she could stop herself. It was silly, really. Cassie complimented everyone, and no doubt would have said the same if she had seen Levi, and Lydia was always telling people that they looked pretty. There was nothing strange about telling somebody that they looked nice, even if Levi always looked this lovely, and even if Ameliaās heart felt like it was going to leap out of her chest.
Nothing weird about it at all, completely platonic and ordinary.
āI.. I really like your sneakers,ā she commented, awkwardly giggling as she realised just what an idiot she was making of herself. Shaking her head, she nodded towards the restaurant that they were both now loitering outside of. āUm, shall we?ā
Levi was freaking the fuck out. Ronnie was busy mooning over James, Joe was off doing God knows what and she figured that Louis had finally changed the locks on his apartment so she couldnāt barge in and annoy him whenever she wanted to. That only meant she was on her own and had no one to yell at about the fact that she was hanging out with Amelia. It wasnāt such a rare excursion, but the matter of the fact was that Amelia had asked her to do something on Valentineās Day. Like, the day where asking someone to do something with you means something. With Leviās bad luck pulling through for her even on today of all days, sheād discovered that Amelia hadnāt been aware it was Valentineās Day, which was an error that Levi wasnāt aware someone as smart as Amelia was capable of making. All in all, she should be telling herself that this was just an innocent outing between two friends, but the possible implications still had Leviās heart going a mile a minute.
In hindsight, arriving at the restaurant twenty minutes early probably wasnāt her best idea. She spent her wait on Amy kicking at the ground and combing her fingers nervously through her red hair. Prickly heat crawled up the back of her neck and she scratched at it anxiously. A part of her suddenly felt sorry for anyone whoād ever been a victim to her penchant for itching powder.
As soon as she heard Ameliaās singsong voice, Leviās head snapped up and she whirled around to greet her. Naturally, the brunette looked freakinā perfect with her cute dress and immaculately polished shoes. Levi spared a few seconds to look down at her own ensemble, her jeans and sneakers, that were normally a comfort, now serving to make her feel drastically underdressed.
āHey,ā she smiled shyly. Levi was not shy, but she was frequently rendered speechless by pretty, dress-wearing brunettes who knew cloud facts and the Bank of Englandās anniversary.
She was sure that her cheeks matched her hair, her blush blending in with her freckles as soon as Amelia complimented her. Suddenly feeling fidgety, Levi made use of her wriggling fingers by anxiously tugging her sweater sleeves over her hands.
āUh⦠thanks!ā she said brightly. With a floppy sweater paw, she gestured in Ameliaās direction.
āI mean, you look way better. Your dress is really nice,ā she pointed out. Levi didnāt really do dresses, had abandoned them along with her Barbie dolls when she was little and still trying to crawl her way into Joeās brotherly affections. Ever since then, sheād stuck to jeans and ratty hoodies, too self-conscious about having her freckly knees on show if she ever donned a dress.
Eager to push the attention away from herself, she nodded eagerly and followed Amelia into the restaurant. As she peered around, all she could see were couples holding hands across tables and sharing food and sitting side by with one half tucking their head against the otherās shoulder.
āThis looks⦠nice,ā she commented awkwardly, clasping her hands behind her back and balancing on the heels of her sneakers. Pursing her lips when the waiter came over to greet them, Levi didnāt miss the way he gave her a sceptical once over upon seeing her attire, and obnoxiously screwed her nose up at him as if daring him to challenge her.
.akaamy:
Yeah, I just meant⦠We can still, it doesnāt have to be⦠Yes. Right. Um, oh. Iām not sure! What do you think? Thereās a movie, itās called La La Land, and I donāt know if youād like it at all but I think itās very funny because donāt you think that Ryan Gosling looks just the tiniest bit like Mr Griffin? Itās very funny. Or⦠The Lego Batman movie, I hear that is really funny. Caroline and Jason went to see it and they really enjoyed it!
I think Mr Griffin looks like a Hobbit actually. But maybe thatās just because he talks about them so much. I dunno, I sorta have a crush on Ryan Gosling, but I donāt think I could ever have a crush on Mr Griffin. Shoooooot, Lego Batman! Can we go see that? I mean like, only if you wanna. Iām cool with anything.
.akaamy:
A cheat day sounds like a great idea. Oh! Youāre⦠youāre sure? Thatās good. I think so, too. I think it will be nice! Itās just a day, isnāt it? People go on dates every day of the year⦠I mean, to say, um⦠Other people, they do that. And people still hang out on Valentineās Day⦠Iām saying silly things, sorry!
Yeah, otherĀ people go on dates. And like people can just hang out with their friends on V Day. But itās not silly... itās just... I mean... we... so, what movie do you wanna see?
.akaamy:
That sounds⦠really bad for me, but what coach doesnāt know wonāt hurt him, right? No! I did, I did know, of course I knew. I just⦠I wasnāt thinking, but⦠That doesnāt mean, um. You still want to hang out tonight, donāt you? We donāt have to, but Iād still⦠really like to?
You can have a cheat day, itās totally allowed. What? I still wanna hang out! Yeah, like, it doesnāt matterĀ if itās Valentineās Day, it doesnāt mean we canāt... stick to the plan. I think we should still go.
.akaamy:
I havenāt had that one! Weāll have to have some of those tonight. Yes, of course you are! Is that⦠weird? Oh! Oh, today⦠Wow! Iām an idiot, arenāt I? And yes, sorry⦠You probably donāt care about⦠The Bank of Englandā¦
Okay, itās settled, Iām going to make one of every flavour. And the whole box of the sāmores one. Oh, so you didnāt... know it was... Valentineās... Which is cool. Itās fine. I mean, itās the bankās anniversary and thatās way more important. Because money.
.akaamy:
Chocolate ones, those are the best kind! Which do you prefer? A great plan, indeed! You didnāt? Well, yay! Iām glad you were free because otherwise Iād have just been bored and now I get to spend the evening with one of my favourite people! Today? February 14th? The day after Cassie and Aaronās birthday, and the day before my Uncle Rogerās birthday! Did you know that on this day in 1946 the Bank of England was Nationalised?
I like the sāmores one, they taste freaking awesome. Iām really one of youāre favourite people. And like, I sorta meant... Valentineās Day. But all those things too. Like, thatās really cool for the Bank of England. That must have been great for all the people who needed a bank and like, some money back then.
