Magical Uses of Seaweeds and Kelps
First, a little info. Seaweeds and kelps are not actually plants: they are algae! Despite their appearance, they are all algae. There are very few true underwater plants, one of them being eelgrass, which will also be covered here for simplicityâs sake. Keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list by any means, as there are hundreds of seaweed and kelp species in the Puget Sound alone. This is merely a short compilation of the species I see most often.

From Gerd Zieglerâs Tarot: Mirror of the Soul
Hydromancy (Water Scrying)
Water scrying or hydromancy is an ancient form of divination similar to mirror or crystal ball divination. It has become a common feature in pagan and shamanistic religious practices because of itâs deep connections with nature. In the past, water scrying was often performed on the surface of a smooth lake or pond and was done by the light of the full moon. In more modern times, water scrying is often performed indoors by using a special scrying bowl (you can pick one up on Amazon for about $20 bucks, or if youâre feeling crafty-you can make one of your own). When you choose to employ water for scrying it is very important that you are in a comfortable environment to do so, some people use incense and candles, while others find these things distracting and prefer a much more simple setting. Regardless, here are some simple steps for using water as a scrying tool.
Before you begin you may want to cast a circle or call corners in whatever way your tradition dictates. This is also a good time to ask Spirit or a particular deity (if you have one that you feel comfortable working with) to guide you in this working and to grant you clarity.Â
Fill your scrying bowl about ½ to ž full of water. If youâve decided to use candles, place one to the front of where the bowl is located and two to each side (if you have long hair, I would suggest pulling it away from your face in the interest of safety, or using battery operated candles).Â
Relax, and focus your mind on the question or issue for which you are seeking guidance or clarity, focus on opening your third eye chakra to allow for more insight.
Gaze into the water, donât stare without blinking. Just relax, and let the energies and images come to your mindâs eye naturally. The images will generally come to the mindâs eye as snapshots.
You may want to keep a notebook or pad of paper handy, take notes on the feelings and images that you get from the scrying. Record everything, even if itâs just a word to jog your memory later on.Â
Once youâve recieved the information or guidance you sought, end the session. Thank Spirit or the deity you invoked and close your circle.Â
Safe Travel Over Water Charm
Ever get that sinking feeling something is going to go terribly wrong?
Iâll be traveling to Hawaii tomorrow, and with the volcanic activity and the hurricane landing the day I arrive, Iâm full of dread. Or rather, I was.
This charm is meant to protect the wearer (and consequently any nearby the wearer) from misfortune while traveling.
Building the charm takes a lot of work and effort, and requires heavy amounts of concentration, knowledge of knotwork, knowledge of wire wrapping, and an isolated location to prevent interruption. You should also do this by the sea, or surrounded by things which invoke the seaâs energy. This is important, since youâre basically asking the sea for protection.
Youâll need:
- Lots of cord. I used black, white, and a brown-tan gradient bamboo cord. Use colors that feel right to you for the purpose. Youâll need to get something like leather or hemp for the slide knot.
- Fishing line or jewelry wire, to support the items when you braid them in.
- Wire to wrap your shells.
- A feather. Feather of a sea bird, or I used a feather made from a shell. This should be a combo of sea and sky.
- Murex shell. Mine wasnât spikey enough for my taste (the more spiked the better), so I addedâŚ
- A shark tooth. Additional aggressive protection, complimenting the murex.
- Starfish. Luck and travel correspondence.
- Any additional shells or items that jump out at you. They jump out for a reason. In my case the baroque pearl and the cowrie both jumped at me. Pearls are wealth, pleasant surprises, hidden treasures. The cowrie is the divine feminine, and intuition (I have a feeling, in this specific case, these are Cernunnos and DĂ´n, respectively, coming in to lend some help).
Cut the cords and fishing line to be the same length. Youâre braiding this, so get an idea of how long you want the necklace, add about 6" to this, then double that length. Better to have too much than too little!
Align one end and tie a knot. Give 4"-6" of length, then tie another knot. Weâre fastening the necklace with a single slide knot, so you need that space on both ends! If youâre fastening with hardware, do whatever you think will look better.
Place the knot end in your mouth, and start braiding, holding the fishing line alongside one of the cords so they braid together. As youâre working, focus on the intent of the project, and sing into it. The song doesnât have to be specific, or even have lyrics. Just humming something will help you focus energy and will add to the power of the spell.
I spaced each item about 2" apart, threading the charms onto the fishing line only. You can thread how you feel is right, but i suggest either knotting in between each item or using only one cord (with fishing line) to hold each shell, or the pendants will slide around the necklace and bunch together.
When youâve spaced everything evenly, knot, give equal length to the final end, and know again. Trim excess cord.
If youâre outdoors, be sure to tuck any scraps away in a pocket or your bag, so it doesnât end up wrapped around a creatureâs throat.
Make the slide knot (you can find a tutorial on YouTube for this), and youâre done!
Give an offering to the ocean, if you want. It definitely helps. I like to prick my finger and offer some blood, but offerings can be as simple as cleaning up the beach, drawing something intricate in the sand for the tide to wash away, or carving on driftwood or a rock, then depositing it in the water.
Wear on your person as you travel.
Some of my Sea witch tools.
Ever since I saw this tin at the thrift store, I knew it had to become a âSwim Through My Dreamsâ tin. As I often work with water and moon magic, most of the items in this tin have association with one or the other or both and most of the flowers and herbs came from my garden or my parentsâ garden. Correspondences are based on my previous researches and my intuition and experiences with the plants/crystals/shells themselves.
đđđ Swim Through My Dreams đđđ
đ Soft twilight wool to welcome the comfort of the night
đ Lavender - relaxation and sleep
đ Hydrangea - protection, dream and moon magic
đ Jasmine - moon and dream magic, also it smells lovely and is mood lifting
đ Lotus root - peace, calmness, feeling settled into sleep
đ Blue Lotus petals - this is actually a water lily, calmness, peace, relaxation
đ Amethyst - helps with dream recall (also my favourite bedside crystal)
đ Mother of Pearl - moon magic
đ Selenite - moon magic, bring clarity in dreams
đ Seaweed - to help me swim through my dreams
I plan to charge this under the moonlight and then tuck the tin into one of the drawers of my bedside stand.
For more details of correspondences for a number of the plants, please check out Herbal Riot and please always do further research on any plants or herbs you may use.

Beginners How to use Spirit Boards
Many people are interested in connecting to the spiritual realm, especially through the popular method of using spirit boards. Pop culture uses these boards as Halloween decor or as the center of a cheap horror film. However, with popularity comes the murky and often inaccurate depictions of how to properly manage these tools.
This guide will cover how to fulfill a potentially successful sĂŠance.
It should be noted first and foremost the board is a tool, a bridge that connects messages from the spiritual realm to our physical one. The spirit channels themselves through the energies of the participants and with their aid, moves the planchette in order to communicate.
You will need;
1 Spirit board (Store brought is fine, but hand made holds special personalized energy, and home made can be customized to any cultural or personal preference/energy)
1 Planchette (preferably with a hole, legend says you can see other realms through enchanted holes of certain planchettes)
Friend(s) (A single person rarely has enough energy to open channels for spirit communication)
Optional items to enhance the experience;
Candles (watching the flame is an indicator of surrounding entities)
Stones (Grounding, can be used to help cast the circle)
Any other objects you personally desire
Step 1) Set up your sĂŠance space
Place your spirit board in the middle of your friend group, with the planchette at the center of the board. Set up candles, and other objects, as desired. Dim the lights to set the mood and limit distractions.
Step 2) Ground and center yourself
To open channels, you need to condense your energy and center yourself. Simple grounding exercises, breathing exercises and mild meditations are useful in bringing yourself together. A suggestion is to take deep breathes with your eyes closed and concentrate on parts of your body, such as starting with your toes and ending with the center of your forehead. This aims to both relax and open yourself to the messages.
Step 3) Set up a circle
There can be a physical representation, such as stones outlying, or purely mental. Either way, itâs important to image a protective shield around you, to ward off any unwanted entities. This can be a white bubble surround your friends and you, or whatever color you feel most protected by. Add a level of calm and serene energy to farther ground/protect yourself.
Step 4) Hold hands with your friends and connect energetically consciousnessly
This links your energy with everyone else, creating a stronger doorway for spirits to access. This is similar to Step 2, exercises are preformed similarly but instead of an individualistic approach, it is expanding oneself to all participants. It is vital everyone involved is calm and willing. If anyone disbelieves or is fearful, it will negatively affect the results. The Spirit will communicate through your combined energy, if someone is skeptical and doesnât put in any effort, there wonât be enough energy. If someone has fearful, or otherwise negative energy, it may attract and empower negative energies. It is important to remain calm and relaxed through the session.
Step 5) Place two fingers on the planchette and invite the spirits*
Sometimes, depending on who youâre contacting and where youâre doing it, a spirit may jump right in to communicate, or it could take some coaxing. Occasionally once the fingers hit the planchette, itâll start moving- this usually only happens when a spirit is familiar with someone, or was called on during the ceremony prior to this step. However, it usually takes a chant or two, to explicitly invite them. When you chant to invite them, be careful with your wording to avoid inviting anything youâd rather not talk to. As you chant, gently move the planchette in circles until you feel a force aka the spirit moves it elsewhere.
An example of a possible chant is
âWe welcome kind spirits far and near, To talk and laugh, share some wisdom, We expell all spirits who aim to cause fear, We welcome those who are positive & light, Who only speak the truth through our board, We welcome you and we honor you as a friendâ
That is a loose example, and it is possible to speak one up as you go.
*if you incorporated candles, you could chant an invitation for either the type of spirit or energy you want, such as âI dedicate this candle to peaceâ âI dedicate this candle to guardian angelsâ, etc.
Step 6) Spirit Communication
By now, a spirit should begin communication. If not, move the planchette to Goodbye to formally close the session and try again later. It is wise to ask something similar to âif youâre a benevolent spirit move to the sun, if malevolent move to the moonâ. If at any point you are uncomfortable, gently guide the planchette to âgoodbyeâ, and declare farewell aloud.
When talking to the spirit, be sure to be kind and respectful at all times. Be respectful about asking questions, avoid too personal ones. Remember spirits are like people, and can lie, so trust your instincts. Also, donât ask the spirit to do anything physical such as move anything, as thatâs inviting them to develop poltergeist attributes in which may prove dangerous, or michevious later on. When done with the session, say goodbye and move the planchette to âgoodbyeâ.
Step 7) Put away the board
If everything went well, store the board in a trustworthy space for future uses.
If something negative happened, and you still feel the entities energy attached to the board, depending on the severity do a cleansing spell or, for extreme cases, burn the board.
I hope you found this short and simple guide helpful!
Hypothetical routine(s) and stuff for a baby witch to do
So a lot of people I think are feeling that once you become a witch you need to do lots of things, but they arenât terribly sure what it is they are âsupposedâ to do. Here are just a few little ideas for things you could do, if you wanted to.
During creative free time:
Write affirmations or prayers
You could write them for daily use (like a morning affirmation), one for each day of the week, one for phases of the moon, or different ones to encourage or bind emotions or help you get through tough days.
Doodle sigils for use during a later time
Be creative and have fun, as you are not ârequiredâ to use any sigil you have made.Â
Think about what kind of energy (elemental, herbal, animal, planetary, etc) you thin would best be used to charge each sigil
Create lists of magical ideas you would like to explore or write spells for
Donât worry about whether something is ârealâ enough or will work or not.
Make a list of tools you would like and tools you already have
Draw or write about your perfect ideal tools and what you expect them to do for you
Include herbs, stones, crafts, natural finds, and anything else you like
Create an inventory of things around you, in your home, or that you can easily find, for use in your craft
Write what your current beliefs are
Contemplate your current belief system and morals, and how you think magic works.
Make a list of the most important things you want to learn more about or explore
Write down your current talents and abilities and try to think of ways they can be used magically
Build altars
Draw ideas or create digital altars if you do not have the physical space
Be inspired and create them spontaneously or spend your time and research all the elements.
Try writing a spell - it doesnât matter if you know a ârightâ or âcorrectâ way. Just give it a try and see what you come up with!
During research time:
Research what sort of plants are local to your area and discover what their uses are
Look up the medicinal and magical uses of herbs and plants you have in the house and on your property
See if you can discover what sorts of special crystals or stones are near your area or mined close by
Take your lists of magical items you want and research their uses, both modern and historical
Try to discover not only what an item is used for, but why, and how it became associated with those actions.
Research what kind of religions and magical traditions have historically been practiced in your area
Look up lore and mythology for your geographic location
Find what sorts of helpful books are at your library, whether they be related to religion, psychology, meteorology, mythology, history, gardening, herbalism, cooking, magical traditions, or anything else pertaining to your magical education.
Find a popular pagan or magical author and research them to understand the context behind their writings and get an idea of what others think of them
Create your own reading list of library books to keep you occupied
Research closed religions/closed magical systems so you can understand what is not available for you to use, and to gain valuable information on other magical cultures.
During practice time:
Choose 2-3 energetic exercises such as these:
How to send energy to other people
Energetic Check
Distance Charging
Texting Predictions
Energy Ball
Energy Cannonball
Witchâs Guide to Programing
Witchâs Guide to Grounding
Witchâs Guide to Centering
Witchâs Guide to Shielding (Shielding Masterpost)
Witchâs Guide to Charging
Work on a couple of exercises until you feel really comfortable with them and are satisfied that you now have that skill. Then try practicing others.
Spend 50-70% of the time figuring out how to make the exercise personal to you and comfortable for you
Spend 10-20% of the time learning how to focus and get in the necessary headspace to do energy work
Write (if you want) and/or perform simple candle, knot, paper, (whatever) spells as need arises
Try spells for bringing peace and calmness in to your space, giving yourself good luck, protecting against certain dangers, causing small events to happen, or binding harmful actions done against you
Identify unique needs you face in your everyday life and try to manage and control them with energy work
During upkeep time:
Cleanse your personal spaces
Learn floor washes and keep the recipes and ingredients handy
Discover what cleansings and purifications will work for your situation
Personally cleanse
Take a cleansing shower or bath with special ingredients or using the powers of elemental energies
Do healing/balancing meditations or spells
Clean your altars and tools, keep your spaces tidy
Leave offerings to any spirits you work with
Weed your gardens, check on your plants or pets
Update your grimoire or journals
Include personal experiences, new successes, or things that you have learned
After waking up for the day:
Repeat appropriate prayers or affirmations
Spend time in meditation
You can try to clear your mind, magically make way for the day ahead, or do a guided meditation for preparedness or any other purpose
Draw a tarot or oracle card for the day
Use any magical oils or soaps as part of your waking routine
Including glamoring magic as you get ready for the day is a good way to practice
State your goals for the day with magical intent
Magically plan for free time you need during the day so it will be sure to be open for you
During snacks and meals:
Enchant food by adding in herbs or spices with a little energy and a magical command
Enchant drinks by stirring, adding energy, and a command
Give small offerings to spirits you work with by leaving a little food left over on your plate
Magically affirm that the food will bring you energy
Before going to bed for the day:
Repeat prayers or affirmations
Spend time in meditation
If you meditate when you get up and when you go to bed, try a sunrise or sunset meditation, or complementary meditationsÂ
Identify what successes you have had that day
Push away or transform any negative energies send to you that day
Add additional protective shields for sleeping
That was all I could think of. Add more if you think of some!
