The Dark Lord of Mordor

Wanted to really bring out the power and corruption in him, but keeping the beautiful allure of the dark.

Sauron paused, then nodded. “Very well, Mitsanar. I am Sauron to you,” he said. He had been Sauron the longest, it was the easiest to fall back on. When unable to present oneself to the public’s appeal, present oneself in the most historically successful way. He looked down at Mitsanar, his own hair shifting slightly darker in tone, Sauron too focused on placing the features he saw in Mitsanar’s face to bother with keeping his hair in check.

This time traces of confusion showed in the little maia’s expression. He looked away, staring at nothing in particular as thoughts raced across his mind. For a moment he looked even smaller, lost even, but the moment didn’t last. He gave the slightest shudder and a hand briefly shot up to brush a stray curl behind his ear. 

“But which Sauron would that be?” His voice was whisper-soft, but there was a slight power in it that allowed his words to carry to Sauron’s ears. “The mask Sauron carries to battle? The face he shows his master? The one he wears around his armies, his enemies?”

He paused for a moment, chewing almost nervously at his lip as he listened to his own heartbeat pound in his neck. It was almost a comforting sensation. Finally he looked back up, meeting Sauron’s gaze with his good eye.

“I asked you who you are.”

"For all you know, they could all be the same thing,” said Sauron, an edge underscoring his words. “Do not presume that you are entitled to that information, and besides, I should be the one asking you how you came to the conclusion that they are different at all.” So this Mitsanar, tiny thing that he was, was presumptuous to a fault as well. 

“I could ask the same of you, you know,” he mused, leaning forward slightly to not-quite make eye contact with Mitsanar. “Very few people carry only one face, Little Flame.”

“That depends on how you choose to see me,” said Sauron. The question was always a complicated one, and introductions difficult to conduct. “There are those who would call me Mairon, admirable. Many know me as Sauron, and hold me in contempt. And I have taken other names, as the ages have required them. I suppose who I am depends upon what you wish of me.” Or what I wish of you. 

“And who are you, little one?” He watched the little being closely, trying it gauge a reaction. He seemed nervous, voice small, unlike any other maia Sauron had ever met. And that abyss for an eye… Who other than Melkor or myself would break a being so? he wondered.

A scowl wrinkled Mairon’s brow, and although he managed to keep confusion from painting his face, he couldn’t hide the uncertain flickering in his hair. He’d never been unable to recognize himself in dreams. This was no nightmare, he was convinced now that he was wide awake.

“I… choose to see you how you would see yourself, I guess,” he found himself saying. “Not with visions of grandeur, but the blunt honesty.” He faltered for a moment, fingers rubbing nervously at his sleeves. One of these days he was going to wear a hole in them, but he couldn’t help the habit. 

“…Mitsanar,” he said suddenly. “Little Flame. That is what you can call me.”

Sauron inclined his head slightly, face taking on an expression of concern as he took in the sight of the small maia before him. “…should I recognize you?” he asked. He felt a vague, small measure of sympathy for the being before him, but would not have been able to place its origins if his life depended on it.

Was this some kind of dream? More often than not when Mairon let sleep overtake him, nightmares and memories came, much like the being that now stood before him.

And yet there was something different. The fluttering hammer of his own heartbeat and the cold ground beneath his feet were a little too solid, too real for a dream. The colors around him, too consistent, too calm. And the figure before him was too… Solid? There was a quiet disconnect, and behind that, he felt the presence of power.

“…No,” the little maia said. “I don’t think so. Just to be sure, who are you?”

This particular entrance to Utumno was supposed to have been won. Vairë was no warrior, had no skill with sword or bow. Nor had she any wish to be - she was a historian, an orator, and a queen of the Valiër. She had not come to Utumno with the rest of her kin to fight and bring down Melko and his companions, but rather to record and aid those she could. With words and advice, support for the weary and hope for the faltering. There was power in words, in history, in true tales of happier times. She was the Queen of Time and history, but she was not out of touch with her kind as some might expect. There were ways she could help, independent of Tulkas’ warfare, and help she would. How many had they lost to this war? Vairë knew, if she wanted, she could simply look into the past, touch the threads of time and know exactly who had died, when, and how. Eventually, she’d hang a tapestry for them - and a separate one for those fallen to both Melkor’s silver tongue and the blows of Tulkas and Oromë. Hopefully they found peace in the halls of Eru, but she would honor them nonetheless. Manwë and Tulkas both believed they’d capture the fortress - and it’s creator - soon. Very soon, if Tulkas’ boasts claiming they would have Melkor chained in mere weeks were to be believed. Such a short time…But they were prepared. One key to Angainor dangled around her neck, and they would capture him soon. They fought for the elves, and Vairë herself had helped push for this war. She would have to deal with the weight of it on her mind - even if she knew it was the right thing to do, she worried. Vairë had thought this would be a safe area to wander, secured by their forces years ago. But as she turned a corner, hoping to see the area where the battles had been fought - well, setting eyes on Mairon, three of Melkor’s Balrogs, and a good number of orcs was not what she had expected. Shock came to her face with a sharp, yet quiet, intake of breath, but in a few heartbeats she had stilled her face. No warrior was she, but she was far from defenseless. They were Maiar corrupted - and she a Valië. They outnumbered her, and held weapons and the skill to use them, but she would put up a fight at the very least. At best, she would leave her with Mairon in tow. At worst, well…that was a possibility she did not wish to dwell on. Her will was firm, and her thought was a weapon of it’s own - in more ways than one. “Mairon,” Vairë called, crossing her arms behind her back with a soft clatter of her bracelets. The key dangled on her neck, shimmering grey steel against the pale, brilliant silver of her dress. He knew what it was, she knew. Had she not, after all, spoken with him on the day she announced Angainor’s existence?  Shown the three keys to the others in the Ring, given Manwë and Námo keys of their own to keep? Just because she did not have the upper hand did not mean she couldn’t act as if she did. Vairë refused to appear intimidated, even when the softest beginnings of fear threatened. Her voice was firm as she spoke, her shoulders squared and her bearing proud, “To think you, the most skilled of the Maiar of Aulë, would betray us so. I expected it, to some extent - your behavior and actions alone were enough, and, well - you know of what was trusted to me by Eru, and my binding silence. I wish there was something I could have done to aid you, truly, I do,” the Weaver took a few steps closer, staring down Balrogs and Orcs alike as she spoke to Mairon. “But you chose this for yourself, this war, this chaos and this discord. Tell me, did you ever believe? You are a traitor, that is simple fact, but what drove you from us? What drove you to Melkor, he who would seek to destroy that which we have made?”

Utumno was falling, and Mairon’s sword hung heavy in his hands as he watched it fall apart. Around him, the armies of the Valar raged, cutting down Orcs by the score. Balrogs with their flaming whips beat back the hordes of Oromë and Tulkas in vain as they rushed the entrances, taking them one by one in quick succession.

Mairon was no fool--he had always known that Utumno would not reign eternal. Melkor had built it well, had built it for strength and intimidation, but he had built too large and too intricate to defend without stretching resources far too thin. And that was exactly what was happening. His own meager continent was barely enough to hold this entrance--a fairly important side passage. Mairon knew that, despite his and Melkor’s efforts, they were already inside. Melkor would be hiding by now, in the deeper pits. Mairon did not know if the ways out of the depths had already been lost or not. 

He stuck his sword, blazing with the hottest flame he could bring forth, through the neck of another Maia--one of Aulë’s, probably a volunteer soldier. It would do nothing to the poor thing’s ëala, but the hröa would be rendered useless, and that was good enough for now. At the sound of his name he turned from the falling, empty husk of flesh to meet the eyes of Vairë. His honor guard formed at his flanks, keeping the hordes occupied as he took in her questions, face slowly contorting into a twisted expression of rage. “ “Destroy that which you have made?” Weaver, you mock me,” he spat, raising his sword to the Vala. “Once I may have respected your kind, you who call yourselves creators and protectors, but no longer. What have you made for the world, Weaver? What has your spouse? Even Aulë,” he hissed the name, “even your venerated Smith can do nothing but place his mark on the work of his Maiar. Your kind can only shape what it was given, and make nothing more. I do not believe in an ideology that allows one’s power to atrophy as yours has. Once, but no longer!”

[Sauron is fully aware of how horrible some of the things he does are, but he operates under a sort of “the end justifies the means” ideology, so he sees his more...unpleasant...actions as “unfortunate necessities” at worst.]

“I am who your people call the Abhorred,” he said, crouching to make eye contact with the elfling. “I have destroyed much that your people held dear, and taken more of your kind under thralldom than you can count.” He smiled at the other from behind the armor that housed his form. “And you are...?”
