2 Line Posts:
In the first image you can see implied lines through the dashes in the thread sewn into the couch. There are also lines in the seams on the cushion.
In the second image you can see the lines that the two walls make when they meet. These edges are also seen from the walls to the ceiling, and the white paneling as seen in this image.

Untitled 2008, acrylic on acrylic, 60 x 60 x 50 in. (152.4 x 152.4 x 127 cm)
This piece interested me because of how well his 2D elements go along with his 3D elements. This piece has a lot of small details, and I feel like it would look very cool with direct light in a dark room.

This piece stood out to me because it looks like an illusion. I feel like if I were here it would look very different from all perspectives. I like how the light reflecting on the balls is giving them a very perfect “photoshopped” feel.
Scale/ Proportion Advertisement Posters:
In the solo exhibition I see a black background, text that reads “Solo Exhibition, Jayson Musson 2020”, a white squiggly line, and a sketched image of a hat using various colors. In the group exhibition I see bright pink drips and a yellow background, white text that reads “Vibrance MoMA 2020 Artists featured: Daniel Gordon, Ryan McGinness, Mary Weatherford, Dustin Yellin, and a sketch of a person’s forehead towards the bottom of the page. In both of these advertisements, the elements and principles are functioning very well together.
This work is constructed completely digitally, I am assuming using Adobe illustrator. The solo exhibition is organized by a more clean, simple approach. It looks very visually pleasing and concise. The composition is set up by having the text on the top and bottom, and the hat in the center. This makes it seem like an advertisement because that is usually how advertisements are set up. The elements of design I see in this piece are text, color, line, and shape. I see text through the writing she has on there, color in the strokes in the hat, line in the squiggly line and strokes in the hat, and shape in the hat. The element that dominates this work is scale because of the black background, you can not tell how small or large the hat is.
For the group exhibition, the text is all up top where the pink drips are. The sketch of the person is at the bottom of the page. The pink drips are overlapping the figure, which therefore makes it seem like they are dripping on top of the figure. The elements of design I see in this piece are text, color, perspective, and value. I see text through the words she used, color in the background, perspective with the above shot of the figure, and value in the drips and figure. The element that dominates this piece is proportion because the drips in proportion to the head are really large.
The solo exhibition is trying to convey the exhibition of Jayson Musson at the MoMA. It gives me glow in the dark vibes because of the black background and white and colorful strokes in the hat. The white with the colorful strokes make it seem like its glowing, similar to a glowstick. This is a very unique approach and I find it to be very pleasing and successful. The artist is trying to convey that Jayson Mussons exhibition has something to do with a hat.
The group exhibition is trying to convey the exhibition that the group of artists are going to be a part of at the MoMA. It has to do with vibrant colors and possibly the figure on the bottom of the page. The meaning of this work is to get an audience to come to the exhibition. I think Zoe was successful in doing so because both of these advertisements are very bright and interesting, and I believe they are successful.
I think both of these pieces are very interesting and constructed very well. I enjoy all the colors she used and the methods she used to create them. I am personally not very good at using Illustrator so I can appreciate how well she drew those images and constructed both of the pieces. I believe she followed all of the guidelines of the assignment and both of the advertisements are very successful and look very professional.

Focal Point and Emphasis Project
In Carly’s piece I see black, white, and various shades of grey in bumpy lines layering on top of eachother. I also see a red circle popping out from behind one of the black shapes. The elements I see in this piece are line, shape, color, rhythm, unity, focal point, and emphasis. I see shape through the red circle and the black, white, and grey wiggly shapes. I see lines in this piece through the implied lines the edges of the shapes are creating. I see color in this piece through the one red circle. I see rhythm because this piece has a flow to it between the wiggly shapes they all seem to flow together like a mountain range or ocean waves. I see unity because all the shades of black in this piece seem to go together very well. And lastly, I see focal point and emphasis because your eye gets drawn to the red circle due to its contrasting color and different shape. The subject matter of this piece appears to be mountain ranges and a red sun. It is not straight forward but in my interpretation that is what I see.
This work is constructed digitally, I'm assuming through Adobe Illustrator. The work is organized in sections of wiggly shapes going from top to bottom, with the red circle in the top right hand corner of the page. The elements and principles of art and design that appear to dominate this work are shape, focal point, and emphasis. This piece is constructed entirely out of black, white, grey, and red shapes. The main focus of this piece is the red circle therefore she is using focal point and emphasis techniques to do so.
This work is trying to convey an image of the sun rising behind the mountains. It gives me an evil feeling probably just because she used the colors red and black, which I associate with evil or the devil. I can not find a specific metaphor in this piece, but it could have something to do with the color and red and representing the sun in that way.
Overall, I think this piece is very interesting and thought provoking. This work is successful in my opinion because it draws your eye to the red shape and also invokes thought in the viewer. The only constructive feedback I have for this piece is to maybe make it more suggestive of an idea. If they are mountains, perhaps make them more pointy, or if they are waves perhaps make them more round. It is hard for me to tell the subject matter in this piece but she could have done this on purpose. Overall, this piece is very thought provoking and put together nicely.
Emphasis and Focal Point project
Scale/Proportion Class Exercises:
Rule of thirds:
1. The first image of my cat is using the rule of thirds because her face is on a third. The scale and proportion of this image is used to attract our eyes because it brings your eye to the focal point of this image, which is the cat's face. The placement of the image is also doing the same thing; because the cat is placed directly on a third, your eye goes right to her face. This also creates more weight on the right side of the image. This also shows line as well because there is an implied line down her face and torso which is where the third is.
Golden ratio spiral:
2. The second image of my cat is using the golden ratio spiral. The scale and proportion in this image is used to attract our eyes because it brings your eyes to the focal point which is the cat's face. Because she is curled up it really emphasizes the golden ratio spiral in this image. Her body is in a spiral and therefore it leads your eye from her face to the rest of her body in the shape of a spiral. This shows shape and line as well because my cat is curled up in a spiral shape and there is an implied line around her body which is the golden ratio.
Texture Project
In this piece I see three different photos; one of her work, one of the texture thumbnail sketches, and one of the original image. In her actual piece you can see the subject matter is a female with different textures for different parts of her face. These textures are a wood-like texture, dots, overlapping circles, and zig-zags inside of lines. The use of line in this piece is very strong because you can see the lines used to make the outlines of facial features are using a much thicker marker than the rest of the face, therefore making them stand out amongst the thinner details.
This work seems to be constructed using a thin black marker/pen and a thicker black marker. She seems to have done this project on a piece of Bristol paper, and received the original image from online or maybe her own photos. This work is organized by using a different pattern or texture for each part of the face. For example, she used a wooden texture for the face, and the overlapping circles for the lips. Something I noticed while looking at this piece is that she chose to leave the teardrop empty, and not put a pattern there. This composition is set up by having the figure at a profile angle, with her lips puckered.
Each element and principle of art and design I see in this piece are texture, pattern, line, unity, and balance. I see the textures and patterns through her use of patterns in the facial features, I see line through those patterns and the outlines of the facial features, I see unity because this piece seems very united in the sense that it flows nicely and seems like it is supposed to look like that, and I see balance through the use of thick and thin lines throughout the piece, therefore showing a balance of weight across it.
This work is trying to convey emotions through this figure's facial expression. This work is making me think if the textures she used has a correlation to this figure, like if the wood on her face is trying to represent something deeper than I am thinking. The artist could be trying to communicate a deeper meaning or metaphor in which I am not picking up. In my opinion, I think she used those textures because they look nice in this piece and are similar textures that normal pop art has. I think they work well with the piece because there usually is not texture in pop art photos like this one, it is usually very flat looking, so the use of texture makes the piece much more interesting.
Overall, this piece is interesting to me and it is successful. I think it could communicate an idea or metaphor better with the audience but the piece itself looks very neat and pleasing to the eye. One thing I wish that was different about this piece is that there would be a texture in the teardrop. I feel like this would make it stand out more and draw the viewer's eye to that first; however there could be a reason she chose not to put a texture there.

Line Advertisement REDO-
This advertisement for the company “Scrabble” uses implied line in a very interesting way. At the end of every body part on the elephant, there is an implied line to show the separation to the next body part. This gives the elephant a chopped up look, therefore contributing to the message the company is trying to convey.
Scale Daily Post-
Due to the scale of this image, the gummy bear appears to be very large
Proportion Daily Post-
This is an image I took of my cat next to a plant. Because of her positioning next to the plant, it is making her look small in proportion to the plant.

Passages Series
This piece is very interesting to me because it looks like art that people of all ages can appreciate. When I first looked at it, it looked like something I would enjoy as a kid to walk through and play around in. As an adult I can appreciate the architectural design of the piece.
When I was younger, I remember reading a book about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (MLK). I remember getting to the end of it and being so upset that he had to be assassinated, murdered! I thought it was such a great injustice. But I realized, his death had a greater purpose, just like Christ’s. He had changed the American view of how to accomplish civil rights through peaceful protests and through the word of God. I am a Christisan and grew up Christian so my own culture is based around Christian holidays and celebrations. I have recently noticed that my view on death has changed. He had died fighting for a cause he believed was worthy and he gave up his life for this country and for his people. It is the greatest love to die for your friends. This is why I included MLK in my color heritage project. He is a part of my country’s history and so is God. We have written on all of our money, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and isn’t that so fascinating that we are a people rooted in faith, that we as a country demand that there be justice and freedom for all people. I am proud of my country, even if it does have flaws.
I included a quote that is from a worship song I love called “Tremble” which is a part of my own culture of going to church and worshipping God. The quote says “Jesus, you make the darkness tremble”. Another quote that MLK says is “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” And gosh, doesn’t Jesus drive out darkness and hate! And we can too as it is seen with MLK. I find it fascinating that both MLK and Christ died at a young age, in their 30s. Both deaths seem unfortunate because they were creating new beliefs and instilling love and hope and peace into the minds of all people. They were starting a movement, a revolution! A radical change in the way people behave and the way people are! They changed the very essence of humanity. And of course MLK was just a man and not the Messiah, but he preached the word of God for all to hear, to fight injustice and to fight for what you believe is right. I believe both these figures capture the essence of what it is to be an American.
As for color, I utilized darker colors to represent the dark whereas there is light coming from Jesus’ head to represent how he drives out all darkness. In addition, the background of the American flag has a pink and brighter background to represent beauty and peace.
And at this point you may be wondering what the dancers are in the middle of the scene. They represent love, through the use of red tones and because they are dancing together. This is a representation of my Puerto Rican heritage where salsa dancing was created! I love to dance with my mom and to me it represents freedom, just like America does.
Overall, the idea of this piece, although somewhat scattered, is the idea of freedom from darkness, the beauty of justice and sacrifice, and of course love.
In this piece, I see a collage of printed/magazine images. Some of which are a couple salsa dancing as it appears the lady is wearing a red salsa dress, an image of Jesus on the cross with others surrounding him, the American flag, a quote about Jesus, and an image of Martin Luther King Jr with his hand touching his face as if he is thinking about something.
As for the construction of this piece, the images are all placed on top of eachother in the middle of the page, except for the image of Martin Luther King Jr; That image is placed in the bottom right corner of the page. The order of the images is Jesus on the cross, American flag, Jesus quote, salsa dancers, then Martin Luther King Jr. It seems as though Renee had cut out these images and then placed them on the page using a glue stick.
For the elements and principles of art and design, I mainly see Unity and Color in this piece. I see unity through the way the images are placed all in the middle of the page, therefore giving them a united-feel; as if they are all meant to go together. I see color in the same aspect that all of the colors in this image seem to go together and have a certain flow to them.
This work is trying to convey the culture in which Renee lives in. When I first saw this image I was a little confused because I thought it was supposed to represent our ethnic backgrounds, but once I read her description it made much more sense. I now understand that she included the image and quote of Jesus because she is Christian and has been her whole life. This is how she was raised, and she is a part of a community with other Christians at her church, therefore making it a culture for her. This work makes me feel happy because it shows the parts of Renee’s life that she cherishes- such as Christianity, Martin Luther King Jr, and her Puerto Rican heritage.
This work is communicating the different cultures she is a part of, and what they mean to her. I believe she had placed these images on top of each other to show that they all go together and create her as a person. I agree with this work in the aspect that your religion could be a big part of your life and also relate to that of your country. In this case, your religion also related to Martin Luther King Jr and his movement.
In my opinion, I think this work has deep meaning and her explanation further emphasized that. I wish the image of the American flag was cut out from its background and maybe took up the whole background. I also wish the top left and right corners did not have the white of the background showing through. I like the fact that you stacked the images on top of eachother, however I think this piece would benefit from more of each image being shown. For example, most of Jesus’ body is covered up by the salsa image, and I think if you shifted the images around, perhaps enlarged or reduced the size of some of the images, this piece would be more successful. Overall, this piece has a nice flow to it with strong images and strong meaning behind it.
