Cecille huffed as she sat down at the barstool, folidng her hands on top of her pale pink handbag, “I think this may have been the longest day ever,” she said to nobody in particular.
“It definitely was. But that's everyday for the majority of people.” Every hour had seemed like torture for him for the past week and it wasn’t like it was even over. He just crossed one hurdle to find himself facing another.

She could recall the break up which was why she found herself at loss of words as to why he was here right now. Not that it was a complete surprise, just cause she had done a hasty judgement call did not mean that she stopped feeling what she did so she could not expect that had happened to him. Breaking up with Gabe had never been something on the agenda, she could take the relationship being kept a secret and having to figure out places and times that they would be able to see each other. That was worth it if it meant being with him but her leaving law school and feeling her father’s disappointment was not something she was accustom to and she didn’t want to add more onto that. Also Gabe had a lot on his plate, way too much, his family obligations came first and she was never going to be the female that was going to ask him to put all that aside and leave it all behind. She refused to be that female. Sitting up straight just sent alerts all through her body alerting her that she was not ok. Everything ache and it was an ache she had never experience before which said a lot considering she was used to being tackled and getting a beating here and there from soccer. Breathing did not come as naturally as it did and she looked down at her hands and saw the tubes and everything that was in her. “What happened?” The topic about him not being here was not over but this question seemed to be dominating her head right now. What had taken place in the Gala that required for her to be here? “Where are Derick and Wyatt?” If she was here did that mean that they were too? Did something terrible happen again? She didn’t even allow for her mind to go to the worst case scenarios because she refused to do that. Instead she just pressed her lips together and swallowed looking up at Gabe, she wanted to say that she had been a fool for the break up and she didn’t want it, but she couldn’t. Her eyes scanned his features – his worn out features that just screamed he hadn’t slept in a long time – then down to his chest and then to his hands. Those hands that she used to reach out whenever she was scared for some support for some kind of leaning system. “I doubt the media takes a break.” She coughed as her back touched the pillow behind her, “You look really bad. I think Asher is going to beat you on looks today.” She joked softly as her hand landed on top of his.
There had never been any situations that caused him to go the hospital. No dying family members, no car accidents or shootings. What seemed to happen in the lives of everyone else had fortunately steered clear of his life. The experience was a first and perhaps he should have thought about the situation, about the questions. What would people say was always what he was concerned about right—what kept him from saying anything about their relationship to the world as though it was something that needed to be hidden. Initially it started off as self preservation. If they wanted their relationship to even get a start, it would have to be kept secret. Who even knew whether or not they would get far enough into it for them to actually pass the threshold of curiosity and enter a realm of true feelings? He certainly didn’t and despite entering the entire relationship with more than a little skepticism, the days turned to weeks, weeks to months and before he could even think, they had long passed the threshold. Or at least he had. Their dates were suddenly secret not because of self preservation but fear. Fear of what people would say and if they would even have the ability to be together if it came out that they were together. His family and her family would certainly do everything in their power to break up the unholy union and between the two of them, Gabe knew they had more than enough power to do it. And then what? That had been what had driven him he realized to keep things under wraps. But perhaps there had been something more to fear. Something worse than other people breaking them up and that being the very secrecy of their relationship being their undoing. It wasn’t for that reason that Allie had broken up with him, or at least he wanted to believe that. But even he knew that somewhere deep down, it likely had played a role. How long could they keep meeting up in secret, driving separately two towns over just to hold hands and eat dinner? It wasn’t practical so the break up had made sense to him even if he didn’t want it to. Didn’t mean he liked it or wanted to accept it. Which brought him right to her bedside because it didn’t matter to him if they were broken up or if they would stay broken up. He didn’t want them to turn into Ava and Wyatt, throwing acid every time they ran into each other. The concern, the feelings, they were all still there and even if the latter faded with time, the former wouldn’t. “There was an accident. Wyatt and Derick just went out. They should be back really soon.” It had been almost a week since he had actually gotten a regular night of sleep, and he wasn’t sure if he would even that night. It was unlikely even though she was awake. Gabe had been forced to face a very harsh reality—one where he wondered if he would lose and her and it had been unsettling. Extremely so. “Asher always won against me in looks.” He attempted with a small smile, just glad to see that she was awake and even joking. His hand caught hers, fingers gently curling around hers.

Waking up to the burning bright white walls around her was not what she wanted. And for a while as she opened her eyes she had no idea what she truly wanted, looking up it did not take long for the young brunette to know where she was. She had spent hours in these walls when her mother had gotten sick, Allie had practically moved into this building for her, she had always wanted to be besides her and be able to spend every possible moment with her before she had to go. The last thing that she was able to recall was the fire alarm at the gala, how soak she had felt and how the water had managed to give her goosebumps, but she was unable to call any injuries that she might have sustained there that would call for her to be at the hospital. Turning to her side she saw the jackets of her father and brothers, Allie really did have a skill for paying attention to detail, it came in handy every now and then. Her brown hues fell down onto Gabe – Gabe was here? Now she was truly stumped, her fingers went through the sheets as she pushed herself up and let out a small moan, as she felt a sharp pain in her lower abdomen. “What – you shouldn’t be here.” She whispered realizing that it was a lot harder to talk than usual. The break up had come out of nowhere and even before he had time to respond, before he had time to really comprehend what had happened, the night had taken an even bigger turn. To say that everything about the gala was unexpected would be a serious understatement. A simple text message was all he got—he wanted to talk to her after. When they weren’t stuck in public where he was shackled by the prying eyes of those around him, Gabriel wanted to talk to her about her decision again. He understood why she did it and knew that in her mind she was doing him a favor. She was trying not to be selfish because she was leaving again and they both knew that making the relationship work in Charleston was going to be more than difficult. And he understood all of those things, but not once had he even imagined that their break up would happen like this. He usually was good with picking up on these things and the night he came to the hospital, that first night, he didn’t need an explanation. When the days became longer, an explanation got harder and harder to provide. Why did he keep coming back and why was he so worried. Christian and Asher were among her best friends and Derick and Wyatt were her brothers. As far as the town of Charleston was concerned, Allie and Gabriel weren’t that close, only knowing each other simply by travelling in the same circle but not more than that. Or maybe once again everything was just in his head but as each day passed, all he could think was how much, how desperately he needed her to wake up. They had needed air—the rest of the people outside and that left only Gabriel who had shown up a few hours ago. Sitting in the couch inside the room, palms pressed together by his lips, he could do nothing but think, but wait. He was never religious but hell he was praying. Praying that she got out, that she at least got to go out and do the work she wanted. He didn’t care about the break up, or about her wanting to leave. Instead all the man wanted was for her to be able to go do what she wanted, to wake up and go be who she wanted to be. The sound of pain from her was what brought him out of his temporary reverie, and immediately the man stood to go to her. “Don’t move.” Only she would be concerned about that in that moment. “It’s okay, they all went out for a little.”

Carter laughed a little at the man’s honesty. “You know I only voted so my friend would have an ego boost. I was not aware that I had to vote for two more people, though it’s been a while since i’ve been on a date.” The last time she actually went out with anyone was Adam. “Well it was with my last boyfriend….um we actually went to the lazer tag palace. I was always the one to fall for spontaneity.”
The last time he had been on a date, a proper date had been back in college. But while in Charleston, no matter whether it was with Gemma or Allie, Gabriel Lockwood could never actually do the publicly dating thing. It was always hidden away from onlookers because he couldn’t be the reason that their name was in the papers. Especially not because of his choice in women. And he wasn’t the romantic type—Allie actually figured out the details for most of their dates. Being put in this position, he wondered what would be spontaneous. “We can go roller skating. Or there’s an indoor sky diving place if you want really spontaneous? I’m terrible with coming up with these ideas.” The man confessed, not sure what she would want to do, hoping she would fill in those blank spaces for him.

Gabriel: What the hell happened? What do you mean she was hit by a truck.
Gabriel: I just got a text saying Allie is in a coma Christian. So yes, I need you to spell this out for me.

Christian: I know you guys broke up but I thought you should know Allie's in the hospital. There was an accident, she's in a coma.
Christian: She'd want you to know though.
Gabriel: What're you talking about?

“I don’t know if that is a good thing or bad. If my father forgives me I’ll be thankful but that will just sent Wyatt on fire. He has done everything our father has wanted. Walked the narrow line – given up his life and that is not good enough. Derick has managed to do half and half and now those two are at war. I left and he forgives me – It will put me against my brothers.” The logical behind that made sense and why she was admitting that to Gabe right now didn’t make sense. Maybe it was the fact that this event didn’t feel like home anymore, not like it had felt when her mother had been here. When her mother had been there this was usually fun for Allie. She would always get ready and hang out with her friends, who were there at the other side of the building and just dance away the night but tonight the entire room just seemed like a desperate attempt for everyone to forget their problems. “I am thinking about just traveling the world. Maybe take over my mother’s charity events and just go out and see what we are actually doing instead of just taking their words.” She knew that this meant putting more distance between them, she had been wanting to talk to him about this forever but with this coming up and his busy schedule she found herself postponing everything in her life but she couldn’t do that forever. It wasn’t fair right? Or was she just being a spoiled brat here? She had just gotten Gabe to come back recently and now she was having talks about leaving and for how long really only the man upstairs knew that. This was probably the worst place to have this talk but at least she was able to say it. She turned her body and looked at him nodding her head as her fingers slide around the bid, “You have your family here. You want this life and we can never really be official here. Especially now that I have really dishonor my father – if I say I am dating you I am sure to get disowned and you – you’re the one that doesn’t want this to come out the most – so in reality this is the best move. Letters, emails and Skype again.” Her lip was going to give her away if she didn’t control its tremble so she bit gently down at it. “I need to get out for a while. And one of the charities are going to Ghana so I’m thinking about taking that.” Smiling softly she turned back to the crowd, “And I think you are going to make it memorable. You could just read Wyatt’s interview – apparently he decided to be bluntly honest on it. That will get some laughs. I should go put in my regular bid – you know how much my mother loved these events.”
Gabriel could sympathize with them and he knew what she was saying was true. If there were double standards like that, it would end up setting Wyatt off. From his understanding the guy had gone ahead and done everything his father wanted, even if he knew that music was likely where he wanted to be instead. There was a time when they had been friends, when they had actually been close despite their family rivalry but life had a way to breaking and making relationships that were unlikely. His experience had taught him that much. “I don’t think either Wyatt or Derick would hold it against you if your dad forgave you Allie. They might hold it against him, but not you. Even Wyatt, and we aren’t each other’s biggest fans. But I know he would never start hating you just because your father stopped giving you a hard time about leaving before him. And Derick too.” Gabriel listened to her plans, nodding along, not really understanding the gravity or the implication behind them when she first spoke them. She would continue her mother’s work and the thought brought a smile to his face because he could see that. He could imagine her being the person who would be in charity, working to arrange events to raise money. It fit the image and her person that she was. Yet the words continued past that point. There was more she was trying to say and there was no denying the change in the air around them. A change in just the way her words were spoken. Like there had been serious deliberation unlike the words prior that had been spontaneous. This was something she had thought about before hand and when it came to these types of situations, that was never a good sign. One by one his mind made the connections, inferred from her words what she was trying to say. Or maybe he was jumping to conclusions because he didn’t know exactly what she meant. They had been a secret and for the time being still were. If he looked back on their relationship, it had been more of an idea of one than a real one. They had their moments and all the feelings were real. But they had never gotten a chance to be the conventional couple. Her words implied that for a while longer, they wouldn’t. Unlike her, he didn’t have the time to think this through, and Gabriel couldn’t discuss that now. Not in the middle of the gala where he would be up on stage in any minute. Not when he had no more than two minutes to think about it. “Let’s talk about this after the gala? We were going to go to the Thai place tomorrow right? Let’s talk about it then.” Because he wanted her to do what she wanted, but he also needed to know what she expected from their relationship then. They had gotten really good at long distance but how long could it be sustained if that was all it ever was. Long distance and secret?

Ava: Excuse you broseph, I'm a LEAD role. And if someone bothered to actually watch my show, that'd remember the finale ended with me getting into a car crash so my character's in a coma. Not many lines to learns playing a comatose.
Ava: Please, do you know nothing about rap? I'm the ghost writer, I don't get credit or stage time. Besides Ayo waddup is such an amateur start. It'd probably be something like SC born and raise baby. Who cares about Mickey mouse when Ava's in the house. Time to douse oil in this Lockwood fire and set things off.
Ava: I'd win because we're a democratic family so we'd vote. And OBVIOUSLY you and Asher will vote for me and it'll be three to one. So basically, this is happening. Get ready.
Gabriel: You're in a coma? So you didn't turn into a vampire after the car crash. Maybe I'm thinking of a different show. Do you still get paid for those scenes or do they just use the same one over and over?
Gabriel: I really question your sanity at times.
Gabriel: Have you been living with a different family for all these years? Under what conditions do you think that we could pass for a democracy? Honestly, you could probably scare Asher into siding with you but I'd need a lot more incentive. As long as I'm not the one MCing idfg.

Right now she just wanted to go into his arms, it had been a rough week. Her father ignoring her, the media printing out their wild reasons as to why that was and then just having no idea what the next step was – was just too much for her but she was doing her best to handle it. She had kept her head up in the air but it wasn’t until she saw Gabe that she realized how much she really just wanted someone to comfort her. The worst part was that she knew that she couldn’t do that. Especially not right here and right now. So she just let her fingers wrap around her wrist and played with the bracelets that she borrowed from her mother’s jewelry box, no one had still gone through that room. And it was not like anyone was going to. At least not any time soon. Everyone was too busy tip toeing around her death and then with Wyatt’s cancer it just seemed like that death was following this family way too much. “I hope you’re right. He still has not forgiven Derick for leaving or Wyatt for thinking about choosing another career. I actually am taking the steps to get away. We will see how it goes.” Her father couldn’t always hate her right? That was not what family did – sooner or later they forgave each other, right? She tucked her hair behind her ear, deciding to change the topic to something light and fun, “So how are you liking the auction so far? Your family will be really proud of this – you’re a great MC – and there is a good selection of guys up there. I’ve heard people talk about their bids. You might get a record donation this year. “ Leaning on the wall her hands started to move in the mid air, “And people actually went out today. Have you seen the dresses? Clearly I am way behind with fashion world.”
If it were just the two of them, like he often wished it would be, then there were more things he would be able to say. More things he would be able to do that would actually allow him to comfort her in the way he wanted. There was no denying that the step she had taken came with backlash. What was worse than just facing the wrath of her father was the incessant gossiping that went on just because she came attached with a Carmichael label. It was expected that everyone in these circles would do no wrong, and to be honest, it was best if they didn’t. Because he witnessed far too many times what happened when they did and it was never a walk in the park. The difference between Allie and her brothers however, Gabriel knew. “But you’re not Derick or Wyatt. If he forgives anyone, it’ll be you. And he will.” Though he didn’t know how things were in the Carmichael household, he suspected at least in some ways they had to be similar. All these people had grown up together, so it was hardly a susprise that their parenting styles all seemed to align towards screwing their children over the best that they could. Gabriel didn’t necessarily think his parents had screwed him over, but he had never really given them a chance to. Who knew if they would have if he had? “What are you planning?” He wanted to talk to her more, talk to her about everything she was thinking. But he found himself watching for prying eyes, constantly looking over his shoulder for anyone who might have been suspicious. It was unreasonable since they were just talking, but the paranoia was unyielding. “It’s no different than last year but this time instead of introducing all variations of gorgeous ladies, I get to discuss the merits of Charleston’s finest hotties. But it’ll be a good laugh.” Maybe enough to help get her mind off things. “You’re talking to the wrong person about fashion. I just wear what I’m told to. Literally have 0 say in all matters concerning this event. So you’re definitely many steps ahead of me.”

Ava: I've already filmed all the scenes I'm in today. So back to the rap, because Asher's going to come in next. Like, Ashers to Ashers. Dust to Dust. You giving us money, in this we trust. And Great Uncle Earl's gonna come in and break dance after that.
Ava: Not if I convince her to make the theme dance party and the charity we're supporting could be to save the arts.
Ava: You underestimate my ability to make up methods to explain my madness.
Gabriel: You need to get a more prominent role or something because all other actors barely have time to eat or sleep. Where is your rap section? Like ayyo waddup it's ava and you can finish that since you have more time than I do.
Gabriel: I don't think it'd work either way but it'd make one hell of a bet. Mom vs. Daughter. Who wins this epic battle. I'd want first row seats to that.

Ava: Are you sure? Like I have a really good intro rap planned for you next year.
Ava: My name is Gabe and sometimes I forget to shave and if you want cheekbones like mine you better learn how to concave. Or no wait was it contour? Either way I'm a cash whore. And all I want is more more more of your money, hunty. MIC DROP.
Ava: And imagine like sick EDM music playing in the background as you do it.
Gabriel: Aren't you supposed to be memorizing lines or something? Why do you have so much time on your hands?
Gabriel: Do you really think mom would let you turn the gala into a night club. That entire thing sounds like her worst nightmare.

Derick: Please tell me you started drinking. And that you don't plan to stop until a about two days after this thing ends. They couldn't find someone more willing? Your father would've made an incredible host. Where's he?
Derick: I asked Remi to buy me out with my own money. That's how desperate I am to get out of this. A lot of beautiful women around here, sure, and I'd be lucky, sure. But I'm good, you know? Can you bring me the bottom?
Gabriel: I already started. And it won't stop until at least a week after the gala ends. I will do whatever I can to just get that short term memory loss and forget it. I am passing this responsibility to Asher next year. No way in hell I'm doing it again. My father would never do these things. He'll be talking people up in the crowd while the women go crazy over the bachelors.
Gabriel: Did she say she'd do it? Because I'm telling you the people who do that for you, they're keepers. I'd help you out if I could, but I'm not about to add more fuel to that flame. Trust me I know. I'm almost relieved I don't have to participate. I have you covered. I have pre auction and post auction bottles ready.

She touched the side of her forehead exhaling, mostly because the topic of her family was something she usually just kept to herself but as everything was unfolding she didn’t know if that was the smartest idea ever. Everyone else was busy with betting on the males and getting drunk, so she felt like she could relax, that this was normal. Allie didn’t get drunk or really do anything worth talking about in these events – unless something happen to her dress – which then it was not her case. She turned around and licked her lips sighing again not really knowing where to start. “Derick is doing better – he is social now. And not always angry – at least I think that is true. Wyatt is drinking again. Really bad – but I guess that means he is feeling something which is better than the act he was doing before.” She knew he had asked about her but she just toss info about her family cause it was easier to talk about them then about herself. “I dropped out of law school. My dad hasn’t talked to me in two weeks. But we see each other – so at least he hasn’t told me to get out. So i am ok. Someone out there has it worse right?” Smiling softly she shook her head, “It’s fine, time heals all wounds so everything will figure itself out.”
After she had told him everything that had been going on with her family, everything that had unraveled and all the bombs that seemed to be just set up waiting to explode, he had been concerned. Sure his family history with the Carmichael’s was hardly great but It wasn’t as if he wished the worst on them. If anything he was pretty close with a good majority of them. Listening to her tell him about how every single person in her family was doing better, his curiosity had naturally been more inclined towards her. He nodded along with her words, waiting for her to turn the focus to her. Gabriel knew that she was aware that his question had been directed towards her and about how she was doing with her family. It was no doubt that her father wouldn’t be too pleased that she had dropped out of school. But Gabriel supported everyone who decided to just pursue what they wanted to do rather than try and do what their parents wanted. He owed a lot to his parents so he did what they wanted, but that didn’t mean everyone had to. He wanted to be closer to her, do more than just stand the few feet he was from her and try and spew words that he wasn’t sure if would make her feel better. Because Gabriel had never been one for words, but he wanted to comfort her. He could see her trying to just pass over the troubles that she was having, and it took a lot of self control to keep himself where he was. “It will get better. I hate speaking in clichés but honestly as soon as you figure out what you want to do, I know you’ll be able to be extremely successful in it. You’re an amazing woman and once things start looking up, your dad will also get over it. Nothing like this is permanent.”
