Lyla and Zhai'a were stuck in a cave with one of the Twin Adders' White Wolves. A hole in the roof of the cave let some starlight in, but the dense, tense fog outside prevented the light from reaching the forest floor. It was hard to see anything past the entrance of the cave.
The youth grew increasingly agitated. "Please, we must go," he told them, pacing back and forth. His eyes were glassy and his steps unsteady. The Hearers would not let him leave this place. Lyla and Zhai'a stood between him and the cavemouth, countering his attempts with steadfast redirection.
"Please!" the youth begged, scratching long lines into his cheeks. He tried to go around Lyla and Zhai'a but they cut him off. "Pray, why do you just sit there?! We have to go out there and save them! They need us! We must needs go!"
"We absolutely must needs not go," growled Lyla. She and Zhai'a continued to block him with their weaponsāhers a hallowed chestnut rod and his an alkalurops cane.
"Please sit down!" urged Zhai'a. "It's too dangerous out there."
"No, it's not," the Wolf whined, stumbling forward. "It's them! Can't you hear it? They need our help!"
"Fury's tits," Lyla spat. "Can't we justā"
Another oppugnant wave rippled through the natural aether around them. Lyla & Zhai'a grit their teeth. Skin-crawling shrieks came from outside. The noise scratched at their spines and stood every hair on end. It tried to echo through the cave, but the barrier the Keepers had erected held fast inside the cavemouth.
"Help!" screamed a voice outside. It split into many. Each was more distressed than the last. "Somebody!"
"Anybody!"
"Warrior of Light!"
"Hearer of the White Mind!"
"Help us!"
"See?!" pleaded the youth, pulling at his hair. "They're calling you!" He lumbered towards them. "Let us aid them!"
Lyla shoved him back hard and sent him tripping over his feet before a quick blast of Aero cushioned his fall. She wished it was possible to strike sense into the Wolf, but his enthrallment was impervious to it.
"Must you be so rough?" Zhai'a scolded and carried a pack to where the Wolf'd fallen.
"I didn't let him bash his head open, did I?" retorted Lyla. She saw Zhai'a readying Esuna. "You know that won't work."
They'd both tried it already. Even Lyla's white magic didn't remove the corruption. It only briefly interrupted his behavior and kept him from running.
"I don't need it to work completely," Zhai'a said and cast Esuna on the Wolf anyway.
"They need you!" the youth shouted. He clutched at and fought the empty air. He tried in vain to stand up. "Aren't you heroes?" He sobbed and kicked and swung at Zhai'a but Zhai'a refused to be hit. "You're supposed to protect us! You match! Why are you such cowards?! They need you!"
The them that needed them needed them for nefarious purposes. Lyla assumed it wanted to feast on their bodies and aether. Most things did. Almost any other night, she'd just go out and slay whatever was after them. That would probably break the Wolf's curse. This night, however...
Zhai'a's tail whipped from side to side. "Sod it," he hissed and began an incantation. Shadowy magic gathered around the petals of his cane. He held the Wolf down and touched the youth's forehead with the flower bulb. The Wolf passed out immediately.
Zhai'a pulled a bundle of rope from his bag. Lyla was refreshing the barrier when Zhai'a looked over at her. He began to tie the Wolf's wrists.
"Are you going to help once you've finished?" Zhai'a asked.
She turned around. "You need my help to bind one person?" Still, she strode over and started on the Wolf's legs.
"Given his resistance to Esuna," said Zhai'a, "I thought you would be concerned about Repose."
"Not really," Lyla claimed. "I'll just freeze him to a wall if he wakes."
Zhai'a sighed. "It was foolish of me to expect a better response from you..."
"It was."
Another dissentience crackled through the barrier, but Lyla's magic muddled it. The would-be screams sounded more like bleats and twisted their insides less. The Wolf twitched, but remained in his forced slumber. They left the Wolf's side and started to make camp.
"What do you think is out there?" Zhai'a asked. "Voidsent? There are still rumors of cultists gathering on moonless nights." He pulled out a pack of antelope jerky.
"It's possible," Lyla said as he gave her a slice. She showed her thanks with a slow blink. "Perhaps the Dark Rider will kill it."
Zhai'a raised a brow at her before he took another bite. "I thought he was the Dark Divinity?"
Lyla shook her head as she chewed. "Not where I'm from."
Gridania's government is such a mess how many other unincorporated settlements exist in the black shroud completely at peace with the elementals no Padjal or official hearer in sight that they just don't know about.

Day 30: Sojourn
In the twilight of his days, Peeta writes a letter to a man long dead. Hythlodaeus/m!WoL
Peeta is hurting me again. Thinking about him outliving everyone cause heās a viera while his soulmates wait for him to join them in the Aetherial sea.

We had a fic exchange event in our fanfic discord and I had the opportunity to write a filthy, beautiful interlude between Aymeric/Estinien/Vrtra for my giftee.
Hereās the link if anyone wants a dragon smut treat. (All the nsfw dragon sex is in chapter 2)
Peeta barely thinks about the scar or the eye any longer. Heās figured out how to compensate for it and the scar seems to boost his appeal for certain people.
More interesting was when he and Saphir visited Elpis. Hades and Hythlodaeus were both rather appalled that anyone would leave their familiar so damaged and fail to repair them. Hades especially was extremely wroth at the idea of such wanton carelessness of oneās familiar and at the idea of it being a deliberately inflicted injury.
This shocked and amused Peeta, given the garleans in question were under Emperor Solusā command when it happened. It was one of the big moments that had him reevaluating his opinion of ancient Emet-Selch vs Ascian Emet-Selch.
Peeta is such a loving, joyful bunne. Heās so happy just to enjoy life and go with the flow. Sometimes he makes me sad though, because heāll outlive almost everyone he loves.
Saphir is a Miāqo, with the added bonus of a degenerative disease that shortened her expected lifespan. When she returns to the Star to join Hyth and Hades theyāll wait for him. But heās only a little over 100. that means another 400 years or more without the three people that his soul is meant to be with.
This is why I figure heāll end up with Erenville for the rest of his years. They can keep each other company until he can join with his missing parts again.
so we all see a lot about peopleās romantic ships for their wols floating around, but letās hear about some non-romantic ships. who is your wol close friends with? who do they gossip the most with knowing their words wonāt be repeated, or trust with their life in battle, or perhaps even consider like a long-lost sibling? anything and everything that isnāt strictly romantic, just because i feel like those connections deserve a little more discussion
Peetaās best friend is another WoL, the actual Azem shard, a miāqote named Saphir. They are aggressively platonic soulmates. During Ancient times when Azem was known as Virgo, and he was called Pantalaimon, he was her Last Word, the assumed successor for the seat of Azem. They found each other in this incarnation shortly after the defeat of Gaius and his 14th legion at the end of ARR. Theyāve been nearly inseparable ever since.
They know all each otherās dark secrets and vulnerabilities, talk about everythingā¦eventually. Saphir keeps Peeta from being overly noble and self sacrificing. Peeta is Saphirās Jiminy Cricket and keeps her from maiming too many people who get on her nerves. Heās also very buddy buddy with Thancred and Lyse, Estinien, and Lucia, who are all privy to his trust on personal issues. Although, heās not a very private person, so heās liable to talk to almost anyone at any given time.
Isoldahlia on the other hand is much more selective. With Ardbert in her head, and Fray, she has a built in support structure that she doesnāt even need to verbalize issues to. Outside of that she has a fellow WoL named Zike who she would trust with her life. For gossip and support she would go to Lucia or Ameliance. Sheās on friendly terms with others, especially the scions whom she cares for deeply, but sheās unlikely to open up to them as she sees them as people to protect or work friends.
