i’m fucking bawling my eyes out. watching this show was one of the best decisions i’ve made in my life. never thought an over-the-top toku-esque show about magical girls in mech armor punching things while fucking screaming out lyrics would hit me in the feels but goddamn did it hit hard. i feel like this is the only thing i’ve ever watched that has made me cry on multiple occasions, and boy did i cry a lot - over every little thing too. from the wholesome scenes, from the badass action scenes that was so good it made me tear up, to the legitimately sad ones, etc etc i’ve lost count of how many times i shed tears by the end of it. honestly, if there’s one thing i regret from all this, it’s that i didn’t watch it sooner.
obviously i highly recommend it. i know this is primarily a kamen rider blog, but that’s exactly why i’m gonna say this: to all my followers out there who haven’t watched symphogear - please do, you won’t regret it. season 1 is a bit of a slog, but trust me, everything after that point is so worth it. it’s got magical girls that kick ass, it’s got catchy af songs, it’s got concert choreography better than idol anime (and hell, even better than real concerts), it’s got M A R T I A L A R T S, it’s got toku references, it’s got mechs, it’s got giant monsters, it’s got gay rights AND trans rights and isn’t fucking subtle about it.
the show is by no means “perfect”, it definitely has some flaws, though i don’t think those flaws are big enough to completely ruin the whole thing. besides, whether something is a flaw or a strength, a curse or a blessing, that just depends on how you view it! but it’s undeniably true that symphogear has a strong message to convey, and it presents them to the audience in such an entertaining and engaging way that it’s hard to turn my eyes away from the screen for even a split second.
fun fact: the only reason i started watching this show was because my friend promised me to give me 60 bucks if i did. but you know what? this feeling is worth way more than that. no, it’s an experience you just can’t value in money. it’s an amazing experience i urge you all to try.
