Kacey’s POV
I stared out the window as the music blasted in my ears watching as the trees passed by one by one. I looked to my left looking at my brother as the stereo continued to blast, making me smirk. I reached out to turn up the volume, but I felt a gentle slap on my hand making me frown as I looked at him. “Billy, what the fuck?” I said with a glare as I leaned back in my seat the sound of Guns for Hire played throughout the car.
“You know I don’t like this song Kace” Billy grumbled as he stared ahead at the road, his eyes covered with his sunglasses. “Well, I think it’s good,” I muttered as I leaned back and stared ahead at the car in front of us, a frown now making its way to my face. “Listen Billy when we get there, we-” “You mean you, you need to remember the rules dad laid out.” Billy said, looking at me with a scowl on his face.
I jumped up a bit and said “Hey no! you fucking kept getting in fights and shit to! You can’t blame all this shit on me!” Billy looked at me again, this time lowering his glasses to look me in the eyes as he said, “Why was I in those fights to begin with?” I froze a bit and sighed as I muttered “Not all of them are my fault asshole, you also just pick fights for no reason”. “Well yeah, but you also kept getting beat the fuck up because you are a major dy-”
I looked at Billy and harshly punched his arm and snapped “BILLY! Shut the fuck up, your mood has been notorious since Dad got with Miss Mayfield, Just know that doesn’t warrant you being a homophobic and racist asshole!” I looked at him my heart beating fast as I leaned back into my seat and muttered “Your fucking turning into our dam father more and more.”
I stared ahead at the road the sound of the engine rearing faster as the music drowned out. Billy looked ahead as he muttered “Sorry, I just don’t know the terms” I looked at him my eyes softened as I muttered “Lesbian, but if that’s too hard for you; just start off with Gay… ok?” He turned to me and nodded and he said “Yeah, ok” with that he stared ahead again as we continued down the road into Hawkins Indiana.
Eventually we followed dads car all the way to our new house, passing main street and so much which made me frown. “Everything is so different from Cali” I muttered as I looked at everyone looking so… Conservative. I heard Billy hum as he nodded and said “Yup the perfect place to make sure that we don’t cause more trouble.
I frowned, sinking into my seat as we made a few more turns, till eventually we came to a stop, my mind was racing with worry. If I thought California was bad when it came to harassment all because I liked girls… I could imagine it here. I sat there frozen memories storming in my mind, until I eventually felt a hand on my shoulder.
“Kace '' Billy said softly, a voice that I rarely heard, I looked up and hummed as I felt something wet fall down my cheek. Billy frowned as he said “Don’t worry, I'll beat anyone up who says something to you” he reached out and ruffled my hair. I smiled softly as I muttered a thanks and then got out of the car as I saw the parents get out of the car heading to the house. I got to the back window of their car and leaned down smiling as I said “Hey Max” looking at the girl who was listening to my Walkman.
I frowned however as she continued to just look ahead for a moment, and I frowned a bit as I touched her shoulder and with that she looked up. She slowly slid off the headphones and looked at me and said, “What do you want Kace?” I stepped back from the window and said “We're at the house and the street looks good for skating-” I watched her shuffle her stuff as she set the Walkman on the seat and opened the door, hitting me slightly.
I sighed as she went to the trunk not looking at me as I whispered gently “Max please” but she had already fully opened the trunk and was rummaging through stuff grabbing her skateboard. I sighed and went next to her and said gently “Max please let’s talk I am so sorry” she slammed the trunk making me flinch. I watched as she put the skateboard down and looked at me with a slight glare. “You and Billy are the reason we moved.”
I felt my chest tighten as she got on the board and left, making me frown as I looked away trying to hold back any emotions that were trying to rise. I shuffled to Billy’s car, ignoring his gaze on me as I went to the trunk and hit it gently saying “Pop it open Billy.”
I heard him grumble as he then popped the trunk and said, “I swear Kace, you hit my baby again”. I put up a hand and said “I know I know, sorry” I reached into the trunk pulling out my orange and white duffle bag along with one of my yellow two set luggage. I looked at Billy who was still staring at me and I raised a brow and then I started to go into the house after no response.
Once in the house I heard the parents to which I ignored and headed to where I was told my room would be. I opened the door and sighed as I threw the bags into the room filled with boxes of mine and some of Max and Billy’s things. I sighed forgetting my room was also for storage, as father said, ‘Maybe this will teach you to be grateful for what you have and make you get your head straight.’
I scoffed at the words, I knew that they meant more than one thing, he didn’t want me to cause trouble. But most of all, he really didn’t like the fact that I was a lesbian that liked girls. Even more so when the whole incident back in California that basically made our family the town pariahs. I flinched as the memory of that contagious laugh and brown locks bounced- however I quickly shook it out of my head.
I looked around the room taking a breath and then I started to separate my boxes so that I could try to start getting stuff out into my room. I don’t remember how much time passed, but I was putting up my poster of Olivia Newton-John in her ending attire from Grease when my door slammed open. I turned to see my father there glaring as he placed down two more boxes and he started to stalk over to me. I gasped as I backed up until my back was at the wall and he stood looming above me.
“What the fuck did I tell you!” He growled as he then walked over to the Grease poster. I gasped as I tried to move forward to stop the expected “Sir it's just a bit of room décor I promise-”. I stopped as a sting was on my left cheek and the sound of ripping was followed. I looked up to see him ripping the poster as he loomed over me. “I didn’t say you could move or talk now did I?” He growled as he loomed over me, and I shook my head looking down, muttering “N-no sir.” I flinched as I felt the sting again and I prepared for another before there was a crash downstairs. “Fucking Hell- bet it was that damn boy” he muttered and I heard some footsteps before they then stopped.
I opened my eyes but was shocked as a hand grabbed my chin and forced me to look up. He was there still standing in front of me. He leaned down looking me in the eyes with a look that made goosebumps raise on my arms. “Be a normal girl for once, got it? Pink, Pastels, hell maybe wear a fucking dress or two, just be fucking normal, get a fucking boyfriend, or else got it?” I was about to nod but I cleared my throat and said sternly “Yes Sir.” I watched as he smirked, he pulled his hand away and then turned away muttering something as he headed downstairs.
Once he was past the door, I let out the breath that had been stuck in my throat as I started to look around the room. “Fucking asshole, I can do what I want” I muttered angrily under my breath as I stormed to shut the door but not without catching a glimpse of red hair. I took a deep breath as I then turned around and punched one of the cardboard boxes angrily to let out all my anger. I stopped after a moment when I saw that the box was now destroyed because of me and revealing the contents. I bit my lip harshly as I turned my back from the box filled with a stuffed rabbit at the top, a small metal box, and a few books. A box of memories that needed to be long forgotten, which were as I got to cleaning the room around me.
After what seemed forever the room was as clean as it could get, since there were extra boxes piled up. I sighed as I looked at everything, and I turned to start changing into pajamas but flinched as the door was opened, I quickly tried to run into bed thinking it was the asshole when I heard his voice “knock knock.” I turned and there was Billy making me scowl but also I felt comfortable. I glossed over him and frowned, noticing his black eye “You didn't have to bring dads anger onto yourself.
I watched as he shrugged my comment off and walked towards my bed flopping onto it as he rested his arms behind his head. “What sort of brother would that make me if I didn't protect my little sister’ I looked at him rolling my eyes “Yeah whatever.” I curled on the bed, my hand gently tracing the floral pattern of my sheets. Ever since leaving California my mind had been a mess thoroughly, wondering if I would be in the closet again but in this scary little town.
I shivered at the thought of what would happen if even one of the wrong people in town found out my preference of romantic partners. I felt a hand on my hand and I opened my eyes seeing Billy with a frown etched on his face. “What's wrong, your eyebrows are furrowed, that only means something is bothering” I rolled my eyes at the way that only my brother knew me best. I sighed and sat up looking anywhere but him finally saying gently “Is it weird that I don't want to be the only… Gay person here I just- Im scared.” I felt the hand on my shoulder gently rubbing circles as I heard Billy sigh and say gently “you know, I'll beat up anyone who gives you issues, so be you wholeheartedly alright? Maybe you will I don't know, find your people quicker.”
I looked at Billy a smile on my face as I nodded “Yeah maybe, I hope there are at least 1 person I can be friends with, if there isn't Romance Ill be fine. You know entering my me era” I looked at Billy with a grin who just gave me a dumbfounded look. I watched him ruffle my hair as he muttered “Get to sleep idiot, we got school alright?” I looked at him get up heading to my door, I grinned muttering “I'm putting in my mix tomorrow-” “Oh my god FINE” Billy groaned as he left my room with a shut of the door and I could hear dad already digging into him. I sighed laying back on my bed a frown on my face muttering gently “What a idiot.”
Robin’s POV
I was working a shift in Bradley’s Big Buy restocking so that I could finally end this god forsaken shift. I groaned as a bunch of crashes where heard followed by “Oh shit” however the person went back to playing air guitar. I finished stacking the last few items in the box I had and I marched myself to the back. There was Eddie Munson playing air guitar as there were multiple soup cans on the floor around him. “Munson!” I yelled and I saw him jolt taking off his headphones as he looked at me. I gave him a glare and shifted my gaze to the soup cans which he followed and nodded starting to pick them up.
“What the fuck has got you all riled up?” I asked, looking at him quizzically to which he smirked. “Robin this sick car was driving into town today, red camaro and guess what! Guns for Hire was blasting from it! That means there might be someone cool in this town like me!” I stared at him for a moment and sighed muttering “Come on, can you help get this cleaned up? We have school tomorrow. And as much as you hate it Munson, you need to go if you want to meet this so-called cool person you know.
I watched as Eddies eyes grew wide at my words, hmm I guess I had been right, an with that watched as he started to gather up the cans and putting them on the shelf. I chuckled a bit at his behavior and gestured to the back saying “I'm going to start packing and locking up, when your done that should be the last of it and than we can head out.” With that I turned away from him and finally let out a sigh as I thought about what school would entail tomorrow.
