“Yeah ah’ get it.” Heaven forbid that someone like Nick might seem a little less manly if he were caught by some undead, cuddling up to some country boy with a man crush. It didn’t bother Ellis though, he knew Nick and he were still good friends, believed it anyway. There was a lot that that kid liked to believe, whether it might be delusional or downright stupid - he trusted the other man with his life. It’s why they were still breathing after all.
Offering a grin with chunks of protein bar flashing through it, he sidles closer, shoulder to shoulder with Nick. He knows he’s pressing buttons, maybe because it’s the only way to get the other guy animated. Made him feel human if they acted like nothing was wrong; his mom told him worrying too much wouldn’t get you anywhere, too many ifs and not enough nows. “So! Yuh got anybody at home Nick? Well, uh, yanno what I mean— kids n’ shit, maybe a girlfriend, ah’ dog? Ah cat?” Perfect timing to play twenty questions, Ellis.
The uncomfortable conman sighs through his nose and continues to eat the stick of meat that he found; enjoying what food they did have. It could have been worse, but he’ll be dead from a heart attack before a zombie attack if he gets stuck having nothing better than slim jims to choke down. He pauses to glance over when he feels the bump of shoulder against his and squints a little before relaxing. Some part of him did want to fuss or protest the closeness, but another ... much louder part was happy for simple contact.
“What does it matter what I had? This is where we are now and sorry to be the barer of bad news, but anyone we had before is most likely DEAD.” Nick frowns more after saying that, knowing it was a little harsh and unnecessary. He rolls his eyes and leans back to give Ellis a small playful nudge. “I had a girl, but no kids. I’m not a fan of those.” He tries to keep his eyes forward and away from the hic’s face, knowing that he might be unable to look away. Why did he have to be blessed with perfect lips, pretty eyes and ... dammit.
“Did you have any of those things? I bet you had a dog. You seem like the type to roll around in the mud one.” He chuckles at the image in his head.

They totally bench pressed cows, if those cardboard cut outs constitute as cows. He wasn’t actually much a farmer’s boy, and he didn’t know much about the trade beyond some basics — he worked on tractor’s before in his younger years playing wrench monkey, they were pretty close to cars anyhow. Or that’s what Ellis liked to tell himself when some of the parts would backfire and ooze oil in his face; it’s a good thing he’s come a long way since then!
But not far enough to get them the hell out of danger when it counted.
Coach was back about two-three miles, with a busted knee and a twisted ankle. The guy already had a tough time keeping up anyway, old age and all that. Maybe if the boy hadn’t been trying to make a goddamn contest about who killed the most zombies and paid attention.. well..
Ellis exhales a little, plopping down on his rear against one of the walls of the backroom. No sense in wallowing over something like that, he’ll fix it and make amends — even if Coach probably didn’t see him to blame for the mishap. Nick’s response finally draws the youth out of his mental slump, bright blue eyes blinking in the dim light. “Sure does. But ah’ reckon ya’ shouldn’t sleep too far away, y’know? If somethin’ happens we wanna be able t’get up and get out.” He smiles briefly, not wanting to push the subject if Nick was really all that uncomfortable.
The sound of the duffel bag zipper cues while the boy takes out a wrapped health bar, "Supper time!", and ballparks it over to the suited city slicker. “Maaaan.. ah’ ever tell you ‘bout the time my buddy Keith ate a candy bar that was ten years old? It was on a dare mind you.. but the doctor’s had t’pump his stomach, y’see, — n’ hey!, didju’ know that that stuff can get bio hazardous? Not even shittin’ you man, but Keith was downright lucky t’walk again the next month.” As if the creeping silence and shitty atmosphere wasn’t enough, he just had to taint the prospect of food too. None too tactful, huh?
The most he knew about cars was getting good deals on expensive ones, in the form of stealing rich bastard's blind. Not that he couldn't very well pay for his own fancy car if he wanted to. It was just that he preferred to hold onto all the money he had rather than spend it when it's unnecessary. As for fixing them, that'd be where he's basically lost unless it's hot-wiring. He could do that much.
In the end, Nick hadn't been surprised at all that Coach would end up dragging behind. The guy was big, stubborn and his attempt to lead the group was bound to come with consequences. Despite the nasty looks and judgmental snorts he got from the guy, he liked Coach. That was likely the only reason he was bothering to go back after this instead of just taking off ahead.
The kid had a point about sleeping too far apart. It was a dumb idea when something could happen during the night. With a defeated sigh, he moves back away from the closed doors and over to Ellis's side. "Yeah, yeah. I get it. Just don't go snuggling up to me during the night or you're in for a rude awakening, got it?" In truth he wouldn't really mind it, but he didn't want anything else stirring up from physical contact.
Nick sat down a few feet away to lean on a wall, not getting even a minute to settle before Ellis began to ramble his usual spew of nonsense. He felt his jaw tighten as dread hit him, only giving the kid a silent glare as he let him get it out of his system. A slim jim is tugged from his own supplies, unwrapped and he's taking a bite off the end. "That's great. Really what I want to hear when trying to eat, Ellis."

He fidgets his fingers along the butt of the shotgun, peering around the room casually while Nick gets himself situated. It’s only a matter of time before they need to get moving, the earlier the better — but.. it was getting really dark. Ellis was a might nervous about sticking it out away from Coach and Rochelle for long, not that he and Nick couldn’t take care of themselves.. it’s just that with Coach’s bum knee, it wasn’t like they could go very far if something bad happened.
A mild streak of nervousness flickers across the hick’s face as he stares at the older man, before daring to smile that dumb smile of his. An optimist to uncanny and annoying extents. “Maybeh if we run th’ rest ah’ the way, but m’ gonna go out in a limb here and say ya’ ain’t too keen on that sorta race.” Ellis chuckles lightly, moving further into the room, They both knew it was more safe when the sun was up, especially if they ran into any special infected.
— Christ, he hated those Jockeys..—
“Y’wanna have a sleepover, NIck?” The boy teases playfully and slowly sets the duffel bag down. This room was probably best, it’s where the safe was. No windows, just an old desktop computer, some furniture and a few scattered remains of employee’s belongings long since past. Now that he stopped and actually thought about it, Ellis sure could use a nap — yeah, even if this floor looked more inviting by the second.
His teeth bite on the end of the nicotine stick as he digs around in his pockets for that pack of matches he found, almost desperately. Ah, there they were. Nick didn't even bother keeping eye contact with the hic, much too busy lighting that match on the back of his shoe and burning the end of his cigarette. He gave it a long puff before tilting his head up, releasing a wave of smoke towards the ceiling.
The gambler finally lifts his gaze back to rest on Ellis, though his eyes take a life of their own in wandering down the guy's form. That shirt almost fit him too well, strained against what he suspected to be muscles. For a hillbilly, he wasn't bad looking and almost had the body of an athlete. Nick amusingly wondered if they bench-press cows in the South.
"You'd be right to say that, because you'd be stupid to think I'm running all the way back. Not my kind of race, kid. Let's just stay in this place and use some empty shelves to block the doors."
Nick releases a snort and moves to plop his bag of junk on the counter, since they were clearly not going anywhere soon. He squints at the mention of a 'sleepover' and moves forward to bump Ellis in the shoulder in passing, going to the only door to shut it firmly. Sure was nice not having any windows to cover up in here.
"What are you, five? Sure, if sleeping on completely opposite sides of the room counts as a sleep over."
Painkillers [Check] Bandages [Check] Antiseptic [Check]
Hell — they struck gold as far as Ellis was concerned. It wasn’t much compared to what usually was needed, but scavenging was probably their only hope with most of the world gone to shit. With a soft exhale, the hick piles in the last bit of supplies in the duffel bag and zips it up. Been walking for a few miles now, feels like his toes might just fall right off at any second. But ever since finding this ‘new’ store, there’s a sense of renewed vigor. A second wind.
Tilting his head, he focuses to the back room located behind the pharmacy counter, “..yuh’ find anythin’ in there?” Some mad shuffling going on, Nick’s probably pissed off they had to even go this far. They should be all grateful, even if it meant backtracking to Rochelle and Coach.
“Hope they’re doin’ alright.” Habitual worried murmuring, but who could blame him?
Securing the bag around his shoulder, Ellis clutches the shotgun in hand before meandering to the back room. Poking his head in, the mechanic squints at the man who’s hunched by a small safe and carton of cigarettes. ‘Tch.. shoulda’ known.’
“Ya’ reckon we should stick around here?”
Pain in my ass.
The gambler growls these words mentally in his head as he ungracefully shoves useful items off the shelves, letting his unhappy attitude take the best of him. Not to anyone's surprise, of course. He wasn't fond of always being stuck with the hic of all people on these runs. It was as if Rochelle and Coach were out to get him -- probably snickering in the background as he's stuck listening to this kid jabber on for hours.
Nick's hands grab for a handful of packaged slim jims off the rack, stuffing them in the back he had over his shoulder. There wasn't much in way of food here that'd be in any good, but he grabbed what he saw. Then he noticed it, that safe and the collection of cigarettes. It was almost like a glimpse of heaven, except without the booze he'd love to have.
He turns his head to peer over when he hears Ellis, having ignored him up until he entered the room. A rolls his eyes at the comment and gives a shrug, moving to stand straighter and pluck a cigarette from it's pack.
"Don't think we'll make it back before dark?"
Looks like there’s been a change of plans.
