Q: 15 years is a long time in this business. Did you expect to still be making games at this point when you started out? A: I knew we'd still be making games. I just had no idea how the industry would explode and how fast technology would advance. It's been a pretty wild ride to get to where we are. The really scary thought is, if we could come this far in 15 years, how far can we go in the next 15 years? That's what keeps me energized. Q: If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring development studios out there, what would it be? A: Well, aside from the lesson in the previous question, I would say to expect the worst and prepare for it. Then enjoy what ever comes along since it is bound to be a pleasant surprise.

As we walked into a air-conditioned trailer, we were greeted by Petri Jarvilehto and his crew from Remedy. On two large, flat-screen monitors was the face of none other than Max Payne. It was the now-famous picture of him holding his 9mm Beretta with a "Go ahead, make my day" look on his face. What happened next absolutely floored us. Jarvilehto touched the mouse and the screen moved. The picture was no piece of rendered wallpaper it was live, real time! We looked on with our jaws hanging open as he zoomed into the gun to the point where you could read the serial number etched into the slide. He then panned around Max, Matrix-style. Next, he un-paused the game, fired off a shot, and then paused it again. He showed us the ejected brass casing, zoomed around it, and then moved the camera toward the space in front of the gun. We saw the 9mm slug floating just inches from the barrel. He zoomed into the bullet and we could see the imperfections in its metal jacket. And this was just the beginning.

Rather than rushing out a slapdash game at the time of the Dreamcast release, we chose to take our time and really make a game that has it all — strong graphics, entertaining characters, engrossing movies and, most importantly, more fun than a barrel of monkeys! The Dreamcast version of MDK2 is silky smooth. It doesn't run at 60fps — we've put just too much content into the game to run that fast. We've got giant environments filled with content, and we still don't have any significant slowdown even when four or five enemies are shooting at the player.

Q: What's the best game you've ever played? A: It hard to consider most computer games as actually being a "game," most PC games are really "challenging adventures," not true games. In the true games category I'd say Tetris. Otherwise, I'd elect Doom as the all-time best. Doom was the perfect combination of technical innovation, polished/balanced gameplay and emotion evoking content. No game since has come close to achieving as highly in these three areas.

We spoke to Peter Kurup, one of the developers from IO Interactive. He told us that for all intents and purposes, the game is actually done. The engine and graphics have been done for months, apparently, and the rest of the development has been devoted to scripting and play balancing. The scripting is now done, and except for a few tweaks — that pesky silk tie still jumps in the breeze too much — the game seems to be finished. Kurup also mentioned that previous reports that the game features cloth deformation were totally false. He also hinted that IO Interactive may get rid of the mysterious barcode on the back of the hitman's bald skull. He was hesitant, though, indicating that the whole thing was a bit of an inside joke among the developers.

One striking instance of the employment of atmospheric lighting is the opening intro sequence. (Do not read the rest of this paragraph if you want to be left in the dark.) While Link is riding his horse (Epona, who debuted in Ocarina of Time) in the forest, two playful fairies cause Epona to throw Link from its back. The eerie moonlight works wonderfully with the freezing fog to create the feeling of actually being there, in a cold forest at 3 a.m. Then Star Kid, a naove freak of a creature, confronts Link and makes away with Epona. In a desperate bid, Link dives and grabs onto Epona's leg. As the tempo is upped, and Link is dragged along, the camera cuts to a closeup of the action, displaying gorgeously detailed animation at a very smooth rate. The overall feeling of a living, breathing world is expertly replicated. Residents putter about, stray dogs chase you down back alleys, and everyone has something to say. To an even greater extent than Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask conveys this sense of immersion.

In the words of Kevin Koy, Virtual Reality is "an artificial world created by stimulation of the senses. The CyberMaxx allows the user to interact within this computer generated, 3D world. The CyberMaxx immerses the user into the Virtual Reality environment. The user can experience and interact with the 3D, stereoscopic, computer generated images displayed in a compelling manner in the CyberMaxx HMD." In layman's terms, what this means is that two slightly different 3D polygon images are displayed on screens positioned directly in front of the user's eyes. The differences are calculated so that the brain is fooled into thinking that it can see a "real" three dimensional shape. Motion sensors check the orientation of your head through full pitch and yaw, and alter the "view" on the screens accordingly. The end result is something like being stuck inside a computer game, where you can't turn away from the monitor and walk away. Everywhere you look, you are faced with another part of the game world. Spooky huh?
