i love all of the "they will not use my tears for their entertainment." & "don't give them a show" mindsets endlessly
meanwhile, prim when katniss volunteers for her:
animals making faces (motherthemountain)
@gamepieces (johanna) sent: are you willing to bet on it?”
“of course i am,” blight says, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. her eyes are red and puffy from the tears she'd shed at the reaping, and blight tries not to worry about it. tributes who've cried before have gone on to win. this isn't over for her.
“mentors aren't allowed to bet. not officially. but i would if i could.”
he'd put all his money on his kids, year and year again, no matter what happened or how they'd reacted at the reaping.
but if he was being honest with himself, it didn't look good this year. then again, it never really did. the odds were rarely in district seven's favor.
she sniffles; a sad and wet, pathetic sound. she turns away when blight puts his hand on her shoulder, fearful that the tears will start again, and looks out the window. the thick forests have already vanished as the train takes her from home.
“you'd be broke.” she whispered, rubbing at her eyes. there's no bite behind the words. johanna spoke it for what it was: the truth. it wasn't like seven didn't have it's fair share of victors, a decent number, all things considered. but far from many.
“you're the last victor we've had.” johanna wrapped her arms around herself and finally wills herself to look back at him. “i don't wanna die.” she said it plainly, somehow managed to keep the quivering out of her voice, even as she squeezed her eyes shut and hugged herself tight. “but i know my odds. if you could bet, you'd be better off putting your money on someone else.”

The panic in Katniss's voice, the desperation set off dominos Peeta hadn't expected to fall so quickly. He didn't even think twice about practice, about his responsibilities. Katniss needed him, and Prim was stuck. At the end of the day, football was just a game.
Peeta snorted a laugh, "You're pretty astute." he quipped, glad he had made her call Katniss in front of him to be sure everyone was on the same page. He let her chatter away, answering truthfully to every one of her questions, but keeping them just short enough not to give away any real. Certainly not enough to paint Katniss in a bad light.
"You have the honor of being the first." he nodded, fingers tapping the steering wheel gently, a small tick of nerves he couldn't quite keep from presenting.
"I have a feeling Katniss doesn't have much in the way of groceries at her place. Is there something you're craving for dinner?"
She lights up at his compliment but settles back in, as he goes on, though Prim can't help but beam. He seemed nice enough. And it wouldn't be like Katniss to send some weirdo to pick her up anyway.
“She should have plenty o' stuff.” But she pauses to think and tries to remember the inside of Katniss' fridge or even her pantry since she was last there. There was food, of course. But Katniss wasn't known for keeping things completely stocked, but they hadn't grown up with full a fridge or pantry either. After a moment, Primrose shrugs and smooths out her dress. “I can make do. She's usually got enough for us to throw a little something together.”
She doesn't think to add more. She won't mention that it should be fine unless Katniss didn't manage to get to the store.
“You ain't gotta worry about all that,” She smiles again, attention back to Peeta, to the way his fingers drummed against the steering wheel. “I can figure it out for one night.”
@gamepieces (johanna) sent: “what more do you need to hear?”
the words spill out of her mouth before she can stop them. before she can even think them, really. “i need to hear that you're going to be okay!”
it's an absolute crock of a plan. it's the kind of plan that makes elley's head spin if she thinks about it too hard.
and yet everyone she knows — and almost everyone she cares about — has agreed to it.
her friends — johanna, finnick. her fellow district 3 victors — beetee, wiress.
and what's going to happen when the plan fails? when they all die in that arena and elley is left here, on her own?
if they'd met another way, johanna think that she and elley would have been good friends. the clear care makes her heart ache. they never would have met if not for the games in the first place, separated by their different districts. so johanna keeps her walls up; she snorts and rolls her eyes.
“please. don't hold your breath waiting for that.”
she leans forward and shakes her head, picks at the grapes the avoxes had brought. how stupid she'd been to think the capitol would ever let any of them go. johanna doesn't know how much she trusts the plan, but it's all they've got.
“the odds of coming out of that shithole once were low, coming out twice...” if it failed only one of them would make it out alive. even if it went well, there was still no guarantee.
“maybe you should just be relieved you get to be out here working these idiots with haymitch. you'll need more luck than any of us, trying to keep a bottle out of his hands.”
@towngirlreaped : i've always been a quick healer.
Prim smiles, though she doesn't look away from her work. Her eyes are focused, her hands steady, as she holds the tweezers and removes the small pieces of glass from Maysilee's hand.
“Well that's good news.” The smile falters for a brief moment, regretting the words. Good news after receiving the worst. The Quarter Quell another reaping. Katniss seems sure she's going back into the arena and Prim feels familiar guilt wash over her; it's heavy and all consuming most days. It hadn't left her at all since her name was called in July, but Prim does her best to not let anyone see.
Her nose scrunches. “Sorry.” she says, brows furrowed, concentrating furhter as she picks out the final piece and sets the tweezers aside and reaches for the damp cloth beside them to clean the wounds. “Cuts ain't deep, so your quick healin' will help it right along.”
the cycle of life
JOHANNA RAINE MASON:
born 54 ADD (21 years old in CF/Mockingjay)
Youngest of 3 siblings (first, her brother Shiloh (48 ADD), then a sister, Talitha (51 ADD), and Johanna makes 3); her mother, Mabel, died from complications during childbirth. She suffered from preeclampsia while pregnant with Talitha as well, but during Johanna's birth it caused multiple seizures.
In Seven, children from poorer families will work after school to assist with chopping wood, and are allowed to work, basically for pennies, around the age of 8, as was the case with Johanna and her siblings.
When Shiloh moved out (July 66 ADD, after his last reaping), he took both of his sisters with him to get them away from their father; he and their sister, Talitha, practically raised Johanna.
It was tight at first. Shiloh worked as a tree climber out in the forest. While in school Talitha worked, like most children in Seven do, but once she left school, she got a job in the papermill.
It quickly became a full house as her siblings got older and got married. They managed a 3 bedroom home for two families, their children (two nieces and a nephew), and Johanna.
Johanna was well liked throughout school and by those she knew in District 7. Hard worker and a good kid, even with her attitude. She was known for her courage and sticking up for others when someone was being bullied in school.
Johanna's girlfriend, Twiggy, was a year older; 18 during the 71st reaping.
71st GAMES:
The Capitol played Johanna's tears as a ploy after she won. But she did cry. She was convinced she wouldn't go home, the place she loved with the people she loved, and hated it. She cried when her name was called at the reaping and throughout her interview with Caesar. Despite the tears she was pissed when he took her hand, supposedly to comfort her.
There were two axes; her district partner got them both and gave one to her after she'd run from the bloodbath.
Her first kill was in self defense. The tears didn't stop then, but they did according to the cameras.
The footage is edited to make it look like Johanna killed her district partner. She did manage to get his axe, though.
The last day of her Games; Johanna went 2 vs. 1 against the career tributes from districts one & two and managed to make it through.
She still had both axes in her hands when they announced her the winner and when the hovercraft lifted her out of the arena. She nearly killed a Capitol nurse with one when she lashed out, swiping her with the axe, as they couldn't sedate her quickly enough.
AFTER THE GAMES:
Johanna was warned by prior Victors about the danger Snow posed & what would happen if she refused him, so she complied when he brought up prostitution in order to keep her family safe.
She was forced to move out of her family home and into the Victor's Village in Seven. Both of her siblings and their families moved in with her. The house was full of life and energy. Twiggy visited and stayed regularly with them, she and Johanna's nieces and nephew paint the house; every trip to the Capitol Johanna would come home to something a new color: a wall, the windowpanes, the doors, and furniture.
Between the trauma from her Games and the abuse faced in the Capitol, she was clearly not the same girl, but she tries for her family. She coddles her nieces and nephew as much as she can. They make her new life bearable.
Johanna is angry and traumatized but she is able to interact with the other victors easily, grateful to have people who understood her. Because of their sex trafficking, she bonds the most with Finnick, and would often look to him for advice
After two years, in the months prior to the 73rd Games, Johanna is in the Capitol with a client and something triggers her. She swears she can't remember what it was that set her off, but when she comes to, the man is dead, and Capitol doctors are sedating her.
Snow is obviously unhappy with her and removes her from the rotation of victors that he sells
Twiggy, Shiloh, and Ranger are killed first. Twiggy is found guilty of plotting against the Capitol and trying to start an uprising where she works at the dam. Shiloh and Ranger are found to be in cahoots. The three of them, with a handful of others, are executed via firing squad. Johanna is told about it in the Capitol.
Supposedly Talitha went mad with grief and killed the children and Shiloh's wife. Peacekeepers attempted to subdue her, as she was pregnant at the time, but were unable to, causing the death of her and the unborn baby.
Johanna returned home to no one and nothing but an empty house.
The Capitol hoped that her family's death would subdue her, the way it had Haymitch, but Johanna became louder and angrier. When she returned to mentor the 73rd games, she lashed out at anyone near her and began pushing people away.
After her tributes die in the 73rd she cuts her hair herself and has continued to wear it in a short style, the way Twiggy had hers.
okay but I also need to spread the good word of Tall Prim, who ends up being about 5'10" when she's an adult
I swear there's an interview where Jena Malone mentioned something about Johanna helping children after she goes back to Seven and I really think that's the best option for her post-canon.
Johanna returns to Seven after the war. She helps to rebuild. It's hard and horrible and she doesn't want to let herself love again and is still terrified to admit she cares for people because they'll be taken from her too.
But she eventually turns the empty Victor Village houses into homes for children; she has people rely on her and feel safe in her presence despite the Games and her rough exterior. And she gets to carry on a tradition from her loved ones: painting the houses fun colors to brighten it up, like her nieces and nephew and her girl did for her.
Realized I hadn't given Johanna an official design and that seemed like a crime

SHE ROLLS HER EYES , but there's nothing other than kindness in the gesture . her littlest girl , there in this fancy new-to-them home filled with all of the bells and whistles of her childhood , it feels like a glimpse of what could have been . she focuses on her own bundle of flowers , deftly affixing the twine and setting it aside to hang .
where she wasn't always able to connect on this level with her eldest , she's always been proud to consider prim a friend . it comes easier now , too , with the comforts of wealth and the continued value of simple living . new clothes , space to work , tools that she'd spent years mastering , hot running water . the road was hard , her heart aches without fail , but she finds comfort in the material .
oh , but the girlish gossiping , she's missed it dearly . it's old gossip , awakened on the television in front of the nation at large . it would be embarrassing if it weren't so funny , and if it hadn't unraveled so many silly little threads of the prior two decades and change . ❝ he was awful sweet on me , ❞ she admits , nodding . nothing much reciprocated , her heart had been set aside for so long , and otho had never been much of an option to begin with . ❝ you're plenty good at tradin' , ain't me at all . we was kids , ❞ she waves off the accusation with a playful smile , something wistful resting over her .
❝ y'know , darlin' , plenty o' boys were sweet on me back then . kept your pa in business , ❞ asterid jokes , ❝ boys , mr. mellark included , useta pay 'im to go out 'n pick flowers 'cause i wouldn't say yes to a date without 'em . always knew they was his though . i'd put 'em in a nice vase in my parents' shop to try 'n make 'im jealous . ❞
she can't help but grin at her ma's confession. though she doesn't quite believe that she's as good at trading as her ma seems to say. she wasn't katniss by any stretch of the imagination, certainly wasn't their pa either. and it wasn't hard to look through the gestures people tried to offer. prim, set up at the hob, trading for what she could for lady's milk and cheese, getting pitying looks and gentle pats on the head.
but mr. mellark had traded with her long before that reaping. she trusted he'd come by, or that she could visit him in the bakery, toting along two pieces of goat cheese. regularly enough that she could rely on him to trade with her or katniss for some bread.
prim clicks her tongue with a furrow of her brow and smirks, glancing at her from the corner of her eyes. “seems a little more than awful sweet to me.” she teased and giggles. but her ma goes on before she's got the chance. prim'd always been captivated by the stories of her childhood, ones so different from how life was now.
her smile turns up at the thought of her mother, young and as beautiful as ever. she'd always been beautiful. no wonder the boys were so fond of her. the idea of boys spending money on flowers now seemed absurd, surely it was some relic of what district twelve had once been. and she lights up at the mention of her with pa, pulling what flowers she'd collected to her chest like a bouquet, like she'd imagined herself as her ma and had been gifted flowers.
“did it work?” she asks, beaming at her ma before looking down at the flowers in her hands. “makin' pa jealous?” her fingers brush against the soft petals. it wouldn't take long for them to dry and they'd be able to put them to good use soon enough and that thought alone is enough to pull her from her thoughts. she's back to work, placing the flowers down and gathering more twine.
