I love how Scott Springwell, in caring so much, and being so diligently trustworthy, has inadvertently become an incredibly dangerous and untrustworthy character in the story.
Because Scott made a promise to always tell Nom the truth. To not hide anything from him. And he doesn't twist that, he sticks fully to that promise. Because he CANNOT lose Nom's trust and friendship, it's the closest person he has. And he knows if he breaks that promise ESPECIALLY now, Nom will not trust him with anything again.
But there's a reason therapists have a non-disclosure agreement. Scott, by promising to tell Nom EVERYTHING- has made it so that he is only ever as trustworthy as Nom is.
And Nom has never been more dangerous. He's never had more power. So, Scott is also dangerous. Because he asks, in perfect innocence, for you to talk to him. To unload all your worries. He is there to listen and will never judge you or be angry with you.
But any secret you tell him will be repeated to the king. And it's his judgement you need to worry about. You're only as safe as how well Scott can defend and explain your actions to Nom.
And most secrets, most worries right now, they are ABOUT Nom. And Scott can't be trusted with those. Not intentionally! He only *wants* to be helpful and kind. But he sees Nom through rose-tinted lenses and that is dangerous.
What this does, is it ties Scott and Nom together. Nom can trust what he says to him, fully. Scott will keep his promise. But slowly, the trust everyone else has in Scott will erode. Out of necessity. And then Scott truly will just have Nom, in his eyes. He will slowly change from a link to the outside world to just as isolated as his king is.
