A Dining Experience
Earth C weather never failed to piss Karkat off. The frigid wind howled, hurling snowflakes that blanketed the streets and buildings with mountains of snow. It did not matter if he had two layers of coats on or his frostbitten hands stuffed inside his pockets. The icy gust still stung him.
The diner was just up ahead on the hill, its exterior ridged like the tough larva’s outer exoskeleton, giving it a life-like appearance. The excursively bright purple and green neon light shone through the sky. It was as if he was staring at a garish pop-up and coming to life. Definitely like gamzee to choose a place like this.
They haven’t talked in months; it wasn’t either of their faults (Well maybe his fault). But you can’t exactly keep taps when schedules and plans keep on piling. So, he was surprised to receive a text back from her.
He pushed the double doorway open. A wave of hot grease and roasted coffee beans hit his face. The Diner was filled with chattering patrons, making it impossible to take in the detail of the interior. He spotted Gamzee at the far back, sitting in a booth across from the restrooms. Even from afar, he could see a tear on the booth’s upholstery and dark coffee stains. It wasn’t ideal but it was far enough from hearing the other patrons' conversations. At least they were still next to a window.
Gamzee was wearing a light grey sweater, the one he begrudgingly got for her a few perigees ago. It just made him stare at her for a moment. She looked nice in it… His awe was interrupted when a waitress bumped his shoulder, signaling for him that he should go over there.
“Next time, I’ll drive both of us,” Karkat grunted as he took his seat. “Can’t stand walking through those shit piles of snow.”
“With what vehicle, bro?” There wasn't a hint of tension or irritation from her question. But it still took him by surprise like a strong breeze hit his back.
Karkat fidgeted around with his scarf. “. I’m still working on that. Plus, I don’t see or heard you trying to get one.”
She smiled “well they invented this shit called public transportation.”
“Oh, shut up."
Gamzee just stuck her tongue out at karkat in a playful manner. It strangely pleased Karkat that they were still at that stage where small jabs came easily without a cold air of silence returning the favor.
When their order arrived, Karkat almost made the waitress take it back. He picked at his eggs, dissecting what went wrong. The ends were completely charcoal, but the yolk remained frozen mush. There was no way in hell was he going to eat this. He looked up at Gamzee to see if she was enjoying her pancakes.
“How’s your?”
“Its fine.”
She hated it. It was bitter and hard to chew. But she was not going to let him know that. If she complained now, what would they do now? End it early and she can go return to her stuffy apartment. Besides walking through the chilly weather, she could not stand staying in her apartment at. She felt confined, waiting for eternity to arrive-
“You don’t need to lie.”
Gamzee’s train of thought halted, “What?”
“Your nose scrunches every time you take a bite. Clearly it sucks ass.”
It didn’t take them too long to leave. Not before, Karkat wrapped his scarf around her neck and, to her surprise, He grabbed her hand.
‘My schedule isn't exactly filled with the brim. I can stop by and we can make something edible.”
Surprise @gamzeeghost I'm your secret santa this year! Hopefully I did the characters justice in your eyes, I tried my best! And let's hope I didn't butcher the english language that much lmao (not that it doesn't deserve it).
I know the current vibe is christmas, but this one takes place in New Years Eve, I didn't want to keep you waiting just to have it set in the accurate holiday, hope that's alright with you. Enjoy!
