i love the headcanon that shepard and garrus get married in me3. i also love the headcanon that turian/human relationships are just unheard of outside of fornax if you get what i'm saying. it's seen as a fringe fetish thing - not a legitimate relationship. so say those two go to the courthouse to sign a couple papers and get married, but there's no precedent for this. is it something that the guy behind the desk could like, draft up on the spot? will their marriage be legitimate? or do they need to raise the issue to someone else to get it amended? who would that be?

just because interspecies relationships are common (expected) with asari does not mean that all interspecies relationships would enjoy the same (even some asari x alien couples face prejudice - remember the soldier in me3 trying to get her asari daughter to her wife's side of the family, because her own family disowned her?). it might in your headcanon, but i like a little drama - and i like to draw on the canon relations between humans and turians, making them a uniquely rare pairing compared to, say, turians and quarians, who enjoy the benefit of both parties being dextro and some pop culture representation.

asari/alien couples are acceptable, but how accepted they are depends on where you are in the galaxy and what your own cultural values are. they're probably more accepted on places like thessia, illium, and the citadel compared to backwater colonies, or even other homeworlds. i do think most species would prefer marrying/mating within their own species, and it would be by and large what's expected of them. perhaps you'd accept your turian daughter marrying an asari, but you really would have preferred she settle down with a nice turian instead.

it's not necessarily that there's active, anti human/turian couple discrimination specifically - well, i guess there would be, especially among terra firma types, but that's not the main reason they can't get hitched. it's just that it's so unheard of - there's no precedent for it in the paperwork (similarly, i'd imagine there's not a precedent for vorcha/hanar marriage either, and making that happen would bring its own unique challenges). for one, the two species share some animosity for each other. two, they do not have compatible biology. those two things alone are significant hurdles to make a long term relationship work for most people. i'm sure garrus and shepard weren't the first to be together in such a relationship, but they are the first to take it to the level of legal marriage. maybe others have tried and failed because they lacked the political pull to make it happen. once brought to public attention, i do imagine that it would snowball into a greater discussion in favor of marriage equality among many interspecies couples, but i do not see shepard or garrus leading that charge. leave the activism to someone else - they just want to be able to visit each other in the hospital.

adding on to this because I think people who have not gone through the paperwork process of getting married underestimate the bureaucracy you have to go through, even for a “simple” courthouse wedding.

first, you have to go to the local courthouse/city hall or whatever and file for the license. You both have to be there in person at the appointment. (I can only speak to how it works in my state, but) then you sit in front of a city employee who asks and writes down your name, occupation, where you live, your parents names and their occupations. Whether this is both of your first marriages. You answer all the questions and then you’re issued the marriage certificate. But you are not yet married. You then have 30 days to get married and get the certificate signed by an officiant and sent back to city hall for processing and filing.

so the wedding ceremony and officiant situation. If you get a religious marriage, your priest/rabbi/imam is the officiant and can sign your marriage license. A non-religious marriage still needs to have an officiant present to officiate the marriage and sign the marriage license. A courthouse wedding means you’re going to a judge and asking them to sign it for you.

I’m breaking this down because at multiple points, you’re at the mercy of the clerk you work with to approve the license. You need a sympathetic judge or officiant to sign it.

And this is just the human side of getting legally married. Turian legal system could look like anything. My guess is you’d need to go through both human and turian systems for it to be valid.

Do you have any art tips for turian expressions? You always nail it and your Garrus is very expressive which is rare in art that's not heavily stylised, I'm always amazed. Can you share some tips on how you get him to have those clear expressions 👉👈

WUH... ME???? i'll be honest with you i do not feel like my garrus is very expressive but i'm glad you think so... it's something i really struggle with getting right. i think i rely on eyelids for emoting more than the brow plates, though i could probably stand to exaggerate the brow plates too because they are somewhat flexible as seen in game. but in general i think that turians are just not as expressive as other species are so i don't want to push it too far. trying to nail that subtle sweet spot between an expression that's too humanlike and no expression at all, i guess. the mandibles are a really great way to also express emotion in a non-human way so i always try to do something with them..

i think there are a lot of people who do turian expressions way better than me!! i wish i had better advice to give but i'm always kinda winging it haha

these days it’s a flex to be able to say that you enjoy reading long-form fiction, and that’s honestly terrifying. i meet infinitely more people who claim they can’t read works longer than 10k than i meet people who say they can and do. this post is not about the time commitment but about the attention span, the ability to stay with something for a while and not lose the thread and not lose your focus so much you have to give up or stop deriving enjoyment or meaning from it. listen, I have unmedicated ADHD too, I have way too high a screen time, i get it. but the human experience, and the stories we tell, cannot all be kept short and easily digestible. so many threads that you spin will only start taking shape over time, over the course of a hundred thousand words, the course of several books. we need to stop accepting this new limitation and fight it instead. there’s so much to lose and so much to miss out on, and i worry about our future.
