Revenge of the Sith | Deleted Scene | Othello and Iago

Supreme Chancellor Palpatine’s subtle but deadly turning of Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side of the Force was originally even more multi-layered than what was eventually shown in REVENGE OF THE SITH. Darth Sidious’s use of jealousy, like Iago’s deliberate and vicious fracturing of Othello and Desdemona’s tragic love in William Shakespeare’s classic play, was expected to be one of the main dramatic elements to have been seen in EPISODE III. In fact, a similar sub-plot was filmed in which Anakin, meeting Palpatine on the landing pad outside the senate building, is told by the Chancellor that Obi-Wan’s decisions are being influenced by a “female senator” (whom an anxious Anakin realises is Padmé Amidala). An earlier scripted element of jealousy by Anakin was cut from a prior scene in the film just before Padme tells him that she is pregnant. Unfortunately, this filmed scene, which also featured a brief cameo appearance from Ahmed Best as Jar Jar Binks, never made it to the finished movie.

100 EXT. CORUSCANT-CITYSCAPE-CHANCELLOR’S TRANSPORT-DAY

The Chancellor’s Transport races through the city and heads for the Senate Office Building landing platform. Waiting on the landing platform is a LONE JEDI. The Transport lands, and CHANCELLOR PALPATINE emerges with FOUR ROYAL GUARDS and MAS AMEDDA. The FOUR ROYAL GUARDS move off in another direction as PALPATINE greets ANAKIN, who has been waiting for him.

PALPATINE Well, Anakin, did you see your friend off?

ANAKIN He will soon have Grievous’s head.

PALPATINE We can only hope the Council didn’t make a mistake.

ANAKIN The Council was very sure in its decision.

They exit the landing platform.

101 INT. CORUSCANT-SENATE OFFICE BUILDING-MAIN HALLWAY-DAY They enter the main hallway of the Senate Office Building. They pass SEVERAL SENATORS, including REPRESENTATIVE JAR JAR BINKS from Naboo.

Attack of the Clones | Deleted Scene | Anakin vs Dooku Extended Duel

Originally, the lightsaber duel on Geonosis was supposed to be only Anakin and Dooku but it changed as George Lucas brought in Obi-Wan and Yoda. Even then, the fight between the Jedi Padawan and Sith Lord was 75% longer than is shown in the film; the extended sequence was shot and Hayden Christensen had worked 8 weeks on that scene. In the original version, Anakin fared much better against Dooku, fighting with the green blade for a short period before Obi-Wan tossed him the blue lightsaber, and even injured Dooku’s arm just like Luke injured Vader’s arm in The Empire Strikes Back.

“I’m a slow learner,” Anakin replied coolly, and he came on then, so suddenly, so powerfully, his green blade whirling with such speed that he seemed almost encased in green light.

For the first time, Count Dooku lost his little confident smile, He had to work fuuriously to keep Anakin’s blade at bay, doging more than parrying. He tried to step out to the side, but stopped as if he had hit a wall, and his eyes widened a bit when he realized that this young Padawan, in the midst of that assault, had used the Force to block his exit.

“You have unusual powers, young Padawan,” he sincerely congratulated. His little grin returned, and gradually Dooku put himself back on even footing with Anakin, trading thrust for sash and forcing Anakin to didge and parry as often as he tried to strike.

“Unusual,” Dooku said again. “But not enough to save you this time!” He came on hard, thinking to drive Anakin back and off balance as he had driven Obi-Wan back. But Anakin held his ground stubbornly, his green blade flashing left, right, and down forcefully and precisely that none of Dooku’s attack got through.

There are hints of this deleted portion in the movie - when Anakin saves Obi-Wan, he and Dooku are standing over Obi-Wan near the back of the hangar, but when Obi-Wan tosses the blue blade, Anakin and Dooku are suddenly on the other side of the hangar near the entrance.

Most of the sequence where Anakin fights Dooku with two lightsabers was also cut.

Obi-Wan watched in admiration as Anakin worked the two blades in perfect harmony, spinning them over and about with blinding speed and precision.

Obi-Wan’s heart leapt in hope as Anakin charged foward suddenly, bringing his green blade over his shoulder and across, down at the Count. Obi-Wan understood immediately, even before he noted Anakin’s blue blade coming up and over the other way - the green blade would push the Count’s lightsaber out of the way, clearing the path for the victorious strike!

Due to these editing changes there is a continuity mistake when Anakin catches the blue blade Obi-Wan tossed him, he is holding the green lightsaber in his right hand. But in the next shot, the blue saber is in his right hand and the green in his left.

Even the final portion of the fight where Anakin fought only with the blue lightsaber was originally longer (as seen in the above featured gifset).

Why didn't they simply let grow his natural hair?

For several reasons, I guess. First, time constraints - the concept designers began to work on the concept art in 2002 and the filming was scheduled for 2003. But most importanly, Anakin’s hairstyle wasn’t supposed to look the way it does in ROTS. Originally, George Lucas chose a concept with much longer hair which was bound into a ponytail. He wanted to make it similar to Qui-Gon’s from TPM to emphasize Anakin’s independence, his rebellion against the Council and also, to make him look dashing.

So you see, there was no chance Hayden could have grown 20 cm of hair in less than 12 months. However, when they tried the hairstyle prior to principal photography, both Hayden and George felt that the long hair made Anakin look too pretty, so in order to make him look more rugged they decided to shorten it until Hayden felt comfortable.

Considering that basically no one noticed and pretty much everyone thought it WAS HIS REAL hair (judging from all the suprised messages and reactions I’ve received), they have done an amazing job.

“…create the linear bridge to Darth Vader, as well. So I tried to take as much from the speech patterns that Darth Vader has and sort of creating a very monotone voice.”

This reveals how much effort and thought Hayden put into his acting and portrayal of Anakin, even thinking about such details and nuances. It’s him basically keeping true to the Original Trilogy as much as he possibly could, going as far as immitating James Earl Jones’ speech pattern. It’s logical, really, because while the machine might have altered Vader’s voice the speech pattern would still remain the same. Smart thinking!
