out of the hundreds of students that roam the halls at school, there will always be at least one that you think is cute. but rarely will someone find a person that they deem worthy of something more. that person for you, was Johnny Cade.
he was a greaser, same as you— only you never dressed the part. many people didn't know about your social status until you mentioned in passing, and even then, they never believed you. you wore floral dresses and skirts, lace hemmed tops and bows in your hair. you were as socy as a greaser could possibly get. most of your clothes were from thrift stores, others were hand me downs. either way, you stood out like a sore thumb in the crowd of greasers.
he didn't pay much mind to you (so you thought) as he first saw you as a soc, not one of his kind. greaser boys rarely went after soc girls as the divide between the two groups were too wide, and the soc's were way higher on the social latter. a greaser dating a soc was deemed social suicide, even if you both paired well together. and due to Johnny being.. well, Johnny, he would be the last person to ask out at a soc, let alone look in their direction.
despite him keeping his head down majority of the time, you still noticed him. you admired his dark hair and brown eyes that were almost black. you thought the way he wore his hair was cute, and his jean jacket fit him perfectly despite it being a bit roughed up. he was unique in both departments— personality and appearance.
"hey, do you see that boy?" you asked you friend, subtly gesturing to Johnny who was leaning against the lockers whilst his friend blabbered on.
"oh, Johnny? Johnny Cade? the one with the jean jacket?" you friend responded, now looking in the boys direction. you nodded in response with a bashful smile, your cheeks somewhat red. "yeah what about him?"
"I dunno.. 'think he's kinda cute."
"really?" she asked in surprise, the both of you beginning to walk to your next class.
"what? why is that surprising?"
"well he's just so.." she sighed, "quiet."
"maybe I like quiet. besides, I think he's handsome." you smiled widely, taking one last look at the boy before entering the classroom alongside your friend.
after that day, your eyes would constantly wander in the halls, hoping to see Johnny again. when you did, your heart would skip a beat and your day became suddenly brighter. when he never appeared, the rest of the day felt empty, as if something was missing. you then realised that this wasn't just a hallway crush, but an actual crush. the kind of crush that you think about going on dates with and kissing, eventually hoping to form a true relationship with.
"I want Johnny to ask me out, but I don't even think he knows that I exist." you announced to your friends who you sat with in a booth at the local diner. everyone stopped chewing for a moment, taking in what you just said.
"well.. maybe ask around" you friend Stacy shrugged. you looked at her with a puzzled expression.
"well, ask his friends. ask them if he's interested in anyone, what he likes in a girl, and if he's single. simple" you other friend Laurie explained before stuffing more fries into her mouth.
"easier said than done. I don't even know who his friends are so-"
Stacy cuts you off, "the curtis gang. though he mainly hangs around Ponyboy Curtis and Dallas Winston."
"Dallas Winston? the criminal? that's who Johnny Cade hangs out with?" Laurie laughs before shaking her head.
"well, Dallas treats him like a brother from what i've heard. probably cause he's so quiet, he takes pity on him. I mean, they're total opposites. Johnny's sweet and Dally's... well, you guys know what he is" Stacy explains and you nod before taking a sip of your coke.
"okay" you sighed, "i'll ask his friends on Monday. i'll see what they say. let's hope he doesn't have a girlfriend, for my sake"
Laurie scoffs as if you had just told an idiotic joke. "I doubt it, he barely speaks in school. him getting a girlfriend would be a miracle-" Stacy shoves Laurie's arm, telling her to knock it off. you roll your eyes at her, ignoring her comment.
Monday rolls around and you can feel your heart rate pick up as the number of hours before lunch grow shorter. you were nervous to ask Johnny's friends about him, not because you were scared of them (maybe a little), but because you were scared of what they would say.
as you entered the cafeteria, you scoped out the battleground. you saw Johnny's group of friends all sitting at a table in the corner. you took a deep breath, setting your things down on your usual lunch table where your friends sat. "okay, i'm going in" you announced and your friends smiled.
"you got this" Laurie told you, giving you a big, cheesy thumbs up. you rolled your eyes with a smile before watching and waiting for Johnny to leave the table.
after a few minutes, he gets up and walks out of the lunch room. you quickly rush over to his friends table, and before they even see you coming, you blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. "does your friend Johnny have a girlfriend?"
you were mortified. you couldn't believe that you had just interrupted their conversation. no introduction, no how are you?, nothing. they looked at you in surprise, all of them staring as if you had 3 heads. "uh.. no" one of them finally spoke, looking up from his book.
"why?" another asked, his mouth full of food.
"just.. asking for a friend." you cleared you throat before taking a deep breath. "what about uh.. his interests? what he looks for in a girl?"
"well, we don't know a lot about his type. he never talks about girls and he's never had a girlfriend. but as for his interests he likes movies... he mentioned his favourite color was blue I think?" he friend began to explain, but before he could finish, out of the corner of your eye you saw Johnny enter the lunchroom.
"great thanks!" you blurted before rushing away, quickly walking back to your table. your friends immediately looked at you in excitement, waiting for you to tell them the details. "that was awful" you groaned.
"no way he has a girlfriend!" Laurie gasped, but you shook your head no. "he's gay."
"no! what?!" you scoffed. "I just.. embarrassed myself. that's all. you'd think I was lobotomised with how I was talking. like a fucking robot or something."
you friends laughed at you. "well at least now you know what Johnny's available." Laurie said before shoving a basket of fries toward you.
"I could have told you that" Stacy muttered, earning a harsh elbow jab from Laurie, a loud "ow!" emitting from her. "but seriously, this is good! you'll finally get a boyfriend!!"
"if he accepts." you groan and your friends look at you in surprise.
"you are gonna ask him out? don't you usually wait for the guy to do it?" Lisa asked. you shook your head no.
"listen, I'm not even sure if he knows that I exist. so it's better if I approach him"
"if he doesn't know that you exist then why would he say yes?" Lisa questioned, and you put your head into your hands, covering your face with a loud groan.
"this is stupid, I don't know what I was thinking!"
"no, hey!" Laurie snapped her fingers in front of you. "don't think like that. just do things to get him to notice you. what was his favourite color? did you ask?"
"yeah, it's blue" you told her, looking up.
"great! so wear that super cute blue top you have! the one you wore to the party last saturday." Lisa exclaimed. you nodded with a smile, thinking about how Johnny would finally look at you the way you looked at him. you'd finally be able to catch his eye.
as you got dressed the next day, you made sure to put a little extra effort into yourself than usual. you wore the blue top like your friend suggested, which was a navy blue halter with a laced hem. you added a nice dark blue eyeshadow to your lids, making your eyes stand out more. you left your hair down, believing it would look better that way.
as you made your way down the hallway, you searched for Johnny. he would often pass by you first period due to his schedule. unfortunately, you were unable to spot him. maybe he's running late, sometimes he does you thought to yourself. but even when lunch came, he wasn't at his usual spot. your heart sank at the realisation that he hadn't come and that your effort was for nothing.
"hey" you heard a deep but soft voice say from behind you. your friends looked behind you in shock, but one that was of excitement rather than horror. you turned around to see Johnny standing behind you, his hands in the pockets of his jeans. "can I talk to you?"
you looked over at your friends, then back at him. your heart began to pound like never before, full of hope as well as fear of what was to come. "uh, sure" you smiled nervously, following him out of the lunch room.
you two walked over toward a quiet area in the hallway. "so, what's up?"
"listen uh..." he muttered. he had this nervous look on his face, one that you had never seen before. "I was wonderin'.. do you wanna maybe.. go out with me on saturday night?"
you eyes widened and your lips immediately tugged into a wide smile, though you tried to hide it.
"yeah! yes!" you exclaimed excitedly. Johnny immediately looked up at you in surprise, clearly shocked that you had accepted his invitation. he smiled widely at you, nodding his head.
"okay, uh.. i'll pick you up at 7 and then maybe we can go to the movies or.. get food or something" he shrugged, attempting to act cool though you could tell he was excited. you thought it was cute.
"sounds good!" you smiled, looking at him in admiration. now that you had finally gotten a closer look at him, he was even more handsome. you had always seen him from a fair distance, but never only a few inches away. now, you could see him clearer. and he was more beautiful than ever. "honestly.." you began nervously, "I didn't know that you knew who I was" you admitted, though shamefully.
"really?" he said in surprise, as if it were something impossible. "course I do. I've always.. seen ya' around and stuff. thought you were real pretty" he admitted, occasionally looking up at you nervously before his eyes ran back to the floor.
"wait.. really?" you smiled, your cheeks red and heart screaming.
Johnny had had you on his mind from the first day you ever crossed paths. he saw you everyday, and when you weren't looking he would admire you from a far, just as you did with him. he had never made a move as he was too shy and ashamed of himself to do so, but after his friends had told him of the little encounter that they had had with you, he figured that it would be the perfect opportunity to finally ask you out. to him, you were perfect, even if you had never talked. he had heard your voice and believed it sounded like a sweet melody, your constant kind tone lifting his spirits.
"I've always thought you were handsome" you admitted, smiling bashfully. Johnny looked at you wide eyed as he had never been complimented before, at least not by a girl. "anyway, i'll see you saturday, yeah?"
"uh... yeah" he smiled, and before you left, you delivered a quick peck to his cheek. it caught him off guard, but he enjoyed it nonetheless.
as he watched you walk away, he felt his heart sing. he had finally gotten his dream girl, and you had found your dream boy. you two were a perfect pair.
