Longtime followers may have noticed that I have been considerably less active on this blog lately. I have been trying to reblog something every once and a while, but original posts and reviews have been few and far between and I have not been good about answering asks.

The fact is, over the past year I have become extremely active in my primary fandom and fan communtiy. All of that activity has lived on my personal blog and the fandom sideblog that I co-admin.

As a result my heart hasn't been very into the content of The Feminist Fangirl. (Still feminist as fuck and fangirl for life, but my main fandom is not usually included in the mainstream "geek culture" conversation so I haven't been super motivated to keep up with mainstream "geek culture" like before.)

Basically I feel bad about running this blog halfheartedly when my passion's not in it. You all are wonderful and deserve better.

So the Feminist Fangirl will be going on hiatus until further notice. I don't expect this to be a permanent goodbye, but I want to be up front with you all. If you want to chat, feel free to send me an ask. And I will always be around and very active on my personal blog. Drop by and say hi!

GRAND MASTER SATELE SHAN. Meaning, back in her day, she was the “Yoda” of the whole Jedi Order!

DARTH ZANNAH. She was apprentice to Darth Bane, who started the RULE OF TWO. A lineage that went all the way to Emperor Palpatine!

There’s also Ganodi and Katooni two Jedi younglings.

Let’s not forget Padme Amidala. Senator from Naboo. And also, the role model all politicians should look up to (no joke).

There are a lot of awesome ladies in Star Wars. Just because you’re too ignorant to look beyond the original trilogy does NOT mean the entirety of the series is lacking in female roles… on a similar note though, I’m disappointed with the new Episode VII casting and their lack of ladies there.

This is Steela Gerrera. She fought against the Separtists and for the freedom of her planet during the Clone Wars.

Don’t tell me y’all forgot about Sabe. She was Padme’s decoy and loyal bodyguard. She was a part of the Queen’s handmaidens who were much more than mere “servants”.

Queen Miraj Scintel man… she ruled an empire (of slavers unfortunately). But man oh man, talk about a woman who takes no shit. She was in Count Dooku’s face when he spoke out against her.

Darth Talon. Do I really need to expand? Look at her badass awesomeness.

This is the Daughter. A Force Wielder aka a Force GOD essentially. She’s also known as the Winged Goddess since she can turn into a majestic gryphon. She’s LITERALLY the embodiment of all light and goodness in the Force.

Mother f-ing Githany man! She was a member of the Brotherhood of Darkness and used a freakin LIGHTWHIP even though she had a lightsaber.

Queen Julia of Bardotta. She was not only the queen of her world, but also her people’s spiritual leader.

Rianna Saren used to be a slave… until she escaped and eventually became a Rebel Alliance hero! Also, prosthetic lekku, how neat is that?

I love this girl. Latts Razzi. She’s a bounty hunter with some wicked style. Let me tell ya…

Sy Snootles. Not your typical “pretty female” and she’s more than Jabba’s singer! She was also a part-time bounty hunter!

T’ra Saa. Man oh man is she and her people cool. Shape shifting plant beings?! And she’s a Jedi Master at that!

Sugi is a bounty hunter and mercenary. Bitches get shit done yo.

Maris Brood. She survived the Purge with her Master Shaak Ti. But after Shaak Ti’s deaths he went totaly dark side.

Let me tell you about Darth Traya! She was BLIND, but was awesome enough to use the force to telekinetically wield THREE lightsabers. You tell me that’s not awesome!

Oh god, Jedi Master Fay. If an elf from LotR was to be in Star Wars, SHE WOULD BE IT. She was super old, yet remained young and beautiful. She was so badass with her Force abilities that she didn’t even USE a lightsaber!

Last but not least, Mara Jade. Emperor’s Hand, smuggler, Jedi Master, and oh yea, eventual wife of Luke Skywalker!

This is not an exhaustive list. I just wanted to let people know on this special day the awesome ladies from Star Wars that get no love because everyone is too focused on the original trilogy due to nostalgia fever.

There are two very great points being brought up here. One, there are more women outside of the original trilogy. So those girls dressed as Leia could definitely dress up as one of the many female characters that have been mentioned above.

Two, there needs to be more women in Star Wars VII. And not as in “we need to add five females here.” NO. I mean, that those new male characters could have been female. Does the fact that they’re male identify or define their character? Probably not. All the more reason to have created them as female. That’s the point that people don’t get.

Ok, so while there are two great points being brought up here (point one being “there’s way more popular Star Wars dude characters than there are lady characters!” and point two being “there are a lot of female characters in the Star Wars universe, they are just considerably less well known!”), I think the first point is not one that is not solved by the second point. As an avid Star Wars fan since childhood, I’ve had a lot of experience with Star Wars halloween costumes, and if you are a girl who does not want to break the bank with expensive cosplay options, guess what your costume choices are? Princess Leia and Padme, and also Sexy Leia and Sexy Padme! The only halloween where I went as a Star Wars character that was not Padme or Leia, I went as a generic Jedi (because trying to get enough body paint to go as one of the well known ones was gonna be too much effort for a middle schooler lol) and oh guess what?? Even with the robes and the lightsaber no one could figure out what I was. Which does bring up a point that if you want to go trick or treating as a Star Wars character, there is a lot more easily identifiable characters for boys to go as than for girls. Pretty much everyone will recognize Boba Fett or Yoda. Zam Wessell or Shaak Ti?? Not so much. And it sucks having to explain your halloween costume to grown ups all the time, especially as their guesses for what you are get weirder and weirder while trying to figure out what the heck that little girl could be dressed as. 

This is also linked to the fact that outside of action figures, popular Star Wars merch only features Leia or Padme, while Anakin, Luke, Han, Yoda, Darth, Jabba, Boba, R2, 3PO, even fucking Salicious Crumb!! get featured on shirts, plushies, backpacks, hats, etc. So that’s helping all the women get buried and forgotten.

Obviously I’m a huge fan of ALL the ladies in Star Wars, and I’d love for the problem in the original post to by solved by something as easy as “hey, well just dress up as one of THESE obscure characters and stop complaining!” but that’s not the case.

I 100% agree with princess-slay-ya here. As I was reading through this post, the first thought I had was “yeah there’s tons of ladies, but how recognizable are they?” ESPECIALLY since every lady who wasn’t in TCW? No longer “technically” a part of the Star Wars universe. I started this blog partially to highlight women in Star Wars that generally get ignored. Do you have any idea the number of books and comics and tv episodes that I’ve gone through where there are either no new female characters or the women get in a ten second cameo that almost isn’t worth writing a biography for? I’ll do it because damn it in a book with 60 characters when only 5 of them are women and 2 of those women are only around for 2 pages? I’m gonna talk about those women because we need to talk about why there isn’t anyone else in those books. 

This shit only gets fixed when The Powers That Be decide to put way more ladies in the movies than men; when women actually start to get DIVERSE female characters (Padme and Leia are great, but they’re both politicians with a gun; give me some other group to work with, please and thank you)(also they are both WHITE and while I guess that makes sense for mother and daughter, there is NO ONE in the movies or the tv shows (except now for Sabine) who is a non-white human and that needs to be fixed pronto); when the authors actually try to include women in all aspects of the books (A New Dawn did pretty good with this; four new female characters, only one died, one was an Imperial, and the last two were very different ladies in a good way)(the fact that there’s not a single book planned that solely stars a woman is bullshit and shows that The Powers That Be don’t actually have representation anywhere on their list of important things to do). 

So, like princess-slay-ya said, we could dress like obscure characters and explain ourselves over and over again. Or The Powers That Be could get their heads out of their asses and actually give proper representation to women.

So apparently in addition to running Archive of Our Own and providing legal advocacy to fans who run up against plagiarism accusations, the Organization for Transformative Works also publishes a peer-reviewed academic journal called Transformative Works and Cultures that is dedicated to promoting scholarship about fanworks and practices. This journal is 100% free to access and has been publishing 2-3 volumes (each containing 15-18 articles, essays, interviews, and book reviews) per year since 2008. 

Why is this so fucking exciting? For one thing, academia has a terrible habit of being increeeedibly sloooow to discuss new ideas — partly due to the very long turnaround time necessary to get articles published. By contrast, Transformative Works and Cultures is super up-to-date and teaming with topics that are actually relevant to modern fandom.

Want to read an academic article about female fans being “fridged” in comic book culture? Done. Interested in learning about the societal implications of mpreg within fanfiction/fanart? Here you go. Want to learn more about race and ethnicity in fandom? Well, would you look at that. Feel a mighty need to read a specially-conducted interview with Orlando Jones about producer/fan interactions in “Sleepy Hollow”? Holy butts the show only came out in 2013 and they already have this what the hell.

And all of this — all of the knowledge, all of the analysis, all of the academic credibility being added to fannish ideas — is 100% free to access.

Transformative Works and Cultures is doing fandom an incredible service: by giving a voice to people within fandom, by preserving the discussions and ideas that were important to fannish culture at certain points in time, by emphasizing our significance as a subculture — and all the while doing it on our own terms.

These are fans working hard to give legitimacy to other fans, and if you don’t think that’s rad as hell then I don’t even know what to tell you.

I just don’t understand why it’s ever an issue anymore. I’ve promoted both Bridesmaids and The Heat and myself and my cast are still hit constantly with the question, “will this answer the question of whether women can be funny?” I really cannot believe we’re still having this conversation. Some people accused it of kind of being a gimmick and it’s like, it would be a gimmick if I wasn’t somebody whose brain doesn’t automatically go to like, I want to just do more stuff with women. I just find funny women so great. For me it’s just more of a no-brainer
