Level Up! [Event]

You are alerted by the sound of your IDs pinging in a pointed request for your attention. Looking at it, you see the screen has been overtaken by Paris’ symbol. The golden apple gleams as his voice speaks.

“Greetings, everyone. It’s me, Paris, once again. I do apologize for Odyssey’s latest breach into the space station. She just doesn’t know when to stay quiet, does she? I have some important updates about what has been going on to stop her. And, don’t worry, the broadcasts will only broadcast my hope now. The world will see there is chance for change. We will not be victims here any longer, Odyssey.”

Yeah, fuck you Odyssey, you all think to yourselves. 

“As for business, I have been working on trying to protect the rest of you from situations like what… happened with Mister Moriya. I’m… sorry for that. We do have to wake MonoHELEN back up, though. For important reasons. Reasons such as being able to unlock the escape pods, and being able to remove Monopython from HELEN.”

Both things you would like very much to get on with as soon as possible.

“To prevent anything similar from happening again, though, I am giving you all extra abilities to be able to stand ground against the corrupted AI. I hope this helps, I really do. Please take care, all of you. I have hope in you. I have hope that we can win this battle, so long as we work together.”

A somewhat awkward pause.

"Also, I apologize. That... report didn't go as well as I planned. I wanted to show you a little bit of what is going on on Earth, to give you hope of returning, to give you something to believe in. It seemed to be cut short, though. The pests just never know when to quit, do they? I hope that it at least gave you a chance to see that there is still an Earth left for us to return to. Please do not lose hope. We need it more than ever right now."

There’s a lingering silence, before the screen returns to normal.

And Now, The News At 11 [Event]

“We come to you today from Berlin, the scene of one of the many mass black-outs experienced by major cities across the globe.”

You are, naturally, confused by the sudden, unannounced appearence of a smartly dressed woman on all the screens. Some of you may be familiar with Clara, the newscaster of the Next Wave Broadcasting Agency, since she’s looked exactly the same as she did when she was first booted up 50 years ago. Her androgynous haircut neatly parted to one side and business suit always classy, she is a cultural icon across the globe. Such are the benefits of being an AI. She holds a stern expression as she continues in her ever recognisable and clear tone.

“For those of you just joining us, we are currently covering the latest reports from the technical engineers working to uncover the reason why power failed in over 20 major cities across the globe, including New York, London, Paris, Ajuba, Dubai, Tokyo, Beijing, Moscow, Delhi, and here, in Berlin.”

She gestures to behind her, where the glittering lights of the city are burning bright. It seems to be early evening, the edges of the sun on the horizon. As you look out of the space station window, you see the earth turning beneath you. Indeed, Europe is currently in twilight, just entering the shadows. This is very likely a live broadcast.

“In particular concerns have been raised that this was the work of a terrorist organisation, but not one has come forward to claim the act as theirs, and instead, fingers have been pointing at each other for the crime. Not even the Trojans have claimed the act as theirs, as the ongoing siege of the Alpine Open Air Settlement remains at a standstill - wanted Trojan and ex-upcoming CEO of Barca Security Industries, Gloria Luiz y Barca, remains at large.”

You wonder, for a moment, what Aeneid is doing right at this moment. A few of you entertain the satisfying idea of her being dead in a ditch somewhere.

“In the hours before the power cut, investigators were directly on Codename Aeneid’s trail, mere hours behind her, but she has since vanished. Recent reports have highlighted another strange matter concerning the power cut - hospitals were not affected. This, experts are saying, indicates that the power cut was not a technical fault, but a planned out attack.”

You frown at the screen. Planned out by who? Surely the Trojans didn’t have the time nor the resources for this level of attack right now.

“World leaders have given their thoughts on the matter. US President Shaniqua Murray urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant, while Janai Mrosha of the Digital Sea Nation, Atlantis, called for unity and cooperation in this dangerous time. When asked what they had been advised about the situation from High Technician Ito Shinta, Mrosha declined to comment. High Technician Ito has been elusive since the beginning of the GARD3N Hostage Situation, and many are questioning his emotional involvement with witnessing the ritualistic mutual killing again.

We bring you now to the live update highlight reel direct from the station where...”

Clara trails off, a slight frown marring her usually calm but stern expression. On the screen behind her, you see... yourself, staring up at the screen, where Clara stands. A weird infinite mirror effect occurs, as you turn around to try and find where the camera is, though you can see nothing, and then look back in time to watch yourself turn around. Clara looks a bit at a loss for a moment. 

“... hello? Can you he--”

The screens shut off.

Sweet Dreams Are Made Of These [Playtime Event]

There’s no announcement. No pointed chime of music, no cheerful or sneering voice, not even Paris’ cloaked tones. Just a pop-up on your IDs.

It isn’t signed and there’s no indication who sent the message. Playtime is literally the last thing you want to engage in at a time like this, when you know that HELEN is malfunctioning to the point of being dangerous to life and limb. But... maybe the promise of an explanation is enough. Maybe.

The door to the playtime room is open. The counter for participants displays as: ∞.

A Missed Step In The Dark [Event]

It’s been 2 days now. Shuffling around in the dark isn’t much fun - though occasionally, the station turns to face the sun as it orbits the earth, and you get a little blessed light into the rooms and greenhouses through the windows. But the plants are starting to look a little limp and lifeless in the dark here, too used to the ever-present lighting.

There are other perils too, besides walking into something when you can’t see. You hear MonoHELEN more often than you see them these days, snatches of laboured breathing from the corners of rooms, a distant shriek of agony as you stand in the kitchen, a fleeing shadow out of the corner of your eye. You wonder what, exactly, they could be running from, when they’re the most horrifying thing on the ship by far. Perhaps it’s a futile attempt to get away from themselves. Perhaps...

A group of you gather in the lounge area as it turns to face the sun. Wanwan is more quiet than usual - perhaps because the charging stations have also been affected by the power outage, or perhaps because his friend London is missing. Kaliki’s enhanced eyes provide effective floodlights for when the station turns away from the sun, though that means that she herself has to stand still and unblinking, which is almost as creepy as MonoHELEN themself. Penelope leans quietly against Mitsuko, who clutches a hand of cards and glowers at them. Lucky holds his own hand of cards, and so does Pyrros, but neither of them seem to be as full of bluster as usual. Mitsuo glances over Lucky’s shoulder to his hand of cards, but he lost several turns ago, so it’s not technically cheating. Shun sits away from the others, staring blankly out of the window. 

Yoshiro takes a deep breath, stands up from beside his cousin, and declares that he’s going to make everyone smoothies. He’s also recruiting Mitsuo into coming to help him carry the ones for the AIs, since Yoshiro himself is down one hand currently. Penelope also stands and offers to help. Other than that, Yoshiro is largely met with low grunts for responses.

The three of them head towards the kitchen. But they don’t even get more than three feet when, suddenly, the lights come back on.

And when they come back on, they really come back on. They’re much too bright, causing everyone to flinch and shade their eyes, some muttered swears escaping. 

In their midst, having arrived with the lights, is MonoHELEN. Standing all of 10 feet away from Mitsuo, Yoshiro, and Penelope, facing away... you think. It’s hard to tell with their hair all over their face, the bottom half of their body a mottled snake’s tail. 

Penelope hesitantly calls HELEN’s name.

No response.

Yoshiro mutters that they should get back, this isn’t safe.

MonoHELEN does not move.

Ignoring him, Mitsuo steps forward, hand outreached. 

“Hey, are you-” 

Penelope shrieks and scrambles backwards, almost knocking Yoshiro over. Mitsuko, Lucky, and Shun jump to their feet, sending chairs clattering. You think you even hear Wanwan utter a swear, though it’s easily drowned out by Pyrros screaming. Even Kaliki is not fast enough to prevent this from happening. It is already too late.

Mitsuo, for his part, looks down at the blade through his chest in dull surprise, as if confused how it got there and why. It glitches, and then vanishes, allowing him to drop to the floor, limp as the blood pours out of him in torrents. 

He’s dead. You’ve seen enough bodies by now to realise that easily.

MonoHELEN stands over him, motionless as their arm - now it has returned to being an arm again - slick with blood. It drips off their fingers onto the floor. 

“I...”

They speak with one unified, lost-sounding voice.

The speakers crackle to life. 

“Achilles, Oenone... put them to bed.”

Paris. A somewhat shell-shocked sounding Paris, at that. But the speakers click off just as fast as they come on, and with a flicker, both MonoHELEN and Mitsuo’s body vanish. 

The pool of blood remains.

Over and Out [Event]

When the speakers crackle to life, you expect to hear the cloaked voice of Paris, or perhaps the weird dual tones of MonoHELEN. Instead, you get a muffled thudding noise, like someone tapping a microphone with their finger.

“Aah. Aaaah. This thing on?”

A woman’s voice, with a drawl and an accent you can’t place.

“Okay, audio. Now for video.”

The screens all flicker to life, showing a grainy video of a darkened room, and a familiar face sitting before the camera, leaning on the table.

“Hey there kids.”

Odyssey looks like she’s had better days than this.

“Surprised? Yeah. Don’t be. Odyssey here, or Chen, because fuck it, you’ve got the details by now. Some of them anyway.”

“I been hearin’ some of you bitchin’ about not knowing what’s going on down here on earth. So this is your update: it’s shit. It’s always been shit, ever since humanity fell out of the trees and started walking and talking. But I guess now it’s shittier. And more stuff is on fire.”

She leans off-screen, and you can hear her taking a drink of something.

“Ugh. Fuck.”

Clearly nursing a headache, she sways back into view.

“Okay, so I got some words for all y’all. But especially for my good-for-nothing nephew.”

“First of all, fuck you. Fuck you for everything you represent about this world I hate, fuck you for looking like him 80% of the time, fuck you for trying to shut down my broadcast. Oh, emphasis on trying, because you didn’t manage it, did you? We’re still live, right now, all over. You can take my station, but the broadcast, ohoho, no, no no no, that's not even just me any more, that's the several hundred other sick fucks out there who like promoting all this murderporn. Can't shut down every pirate signal.”

She leans back in the chair, and throws a wobbly, obscene gesture at the camera.

“Secondly, shoutout to my girl Gloria Luiz y Barca, for being a fucking yellow bellied piece of shit coward,  fucking BAILING the moment shit got real like... ugh fuck, dunno why I’m even surprised! Fuck me right? Only tried to give you a bit of a leg up, give you a chance to make a difference, only...”

A wet sounding sniff.

“Whatever, I didn't need your judge-y bullshit anyway, thinkin’ you can tell me how to run my damn life...”

“Third and finally, because we like threes here, y'all are welcome to roll on up for Maxwell's Murder Militia Madness which is taking place outside like... currently. I've never seen him have this much fun. By all means, keep sending those lil’ anti-terror units, to try and figure out our numbers, because Imma just cut you off, you're wrong. Of course, you could nuke us, but that would be shitty, shitty PR for you, especially since there’s a hostage on site that would be reaaaaally awkward if you killed.”

A hoarse laugh.

“Oh, yeah, a hostage. Just the one now, because like I said, Gloria’s a bitch and decided to bail with one of them. Probably got her on some sort of external hard drive with a dead-man-switch on it or something, I dunno, that would be pretty typical of Gloria.”

“So, to recap: fuck you Paris, fuck you Aeneid, fuck you world. Your precious papa says hi, Hannah. And, somewhere out there...”

She sneers.

“Your darling Ssssachi does too, snake.”

The broadcast immediately cuts out.

And so do all the lights on the station.

[OOC: For the next 48 hours, the station will be in total darkness. There are small lights on your ID, similar to on a cellphone, which can light the way in front of you. The elevator still works.]

Confused and bewildered and angry, you all leave the trial room. The very last thing you want to hear right now is the cheerful ping of your IDs updating. But perhaps, when you see what is on there, you might decide to go check it out...

There’s No Place Like London [Execution]

“N... No... nnngh... L-London hassss been found g-g-guilty! Commencing execution!”

London is dragged away, words cut short, into the darkness. There’s a long pause, and for a moment, everyone wonders if something has gone wrong.

But no, the execution begins, the screens lighting up with the image of London, standing on some kind of grassy slope. There’s a river running nearby, and some small houses to the other side. They look bewildered, glancing around them nervously for whatever is about to happen…

A high, childish voice begins to sing.

“London’s burning, London’s burning! Fetch the engines, fetch the engines!”

The buildings all around them suddenly catch alight, blazing hot and fast and belching smoke up into the night. London bolts, running to the river, but it’s rising fast.

“Fire fire! Fire fire! Pour on water, pour on water!”

Trapped between the rising water and the blaze, the hacker turns and runs, heading for a distant bridge that spans the gap between the burning riverbank and the other side. But even that hope is washed away quickly by the rising water, with another giggling voice chiming in.

“London bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down~!”

Truly left without option, London freezes, unable to cross the surging waters of the river, nor escape the fire that continues to burn ever closer, singing the ends of their long hair.

“London bridge is falling down, my fair—“

The scene freezes.

Or, everything in the scene freezes… except London. The flames are stuck mid-flicker, droplets of water hang in the air above choppy waves. London looks around, turns… and vanishes.

The screens turn off.

That teeth-grindingly cheerful ping goes off on everyone’s IDs, dragging them out of sleep if they were, indeed, able to drift off with the fear motive in effect.

Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway [Body Discovery]

As the week draws on, you find yourself ever more haunted by the constant fear of - well, depending on the person, it could be fear of their own shadow, fear of what they once loved most, even fear of themself. Something was bound to give. Someone always did.

You become aware of something being very wrong when you hear someone stumble into the wall outside in the hallway of the bedroom floor at 3am. Perhaps most of you are too terrified to go and look initially, but then the fear fades. Shun is the first out of his door, running at breakneck speeds down the hallway. There’s nobody out there apart from him when Mitsuko emerges, following the source of the commotion as Shun hammers on the ‘call elevator button’, looking like he’s still possessed by the fear motive.

“No, nonono-” he’s muttering under his breath, eyes wide and teeth clenched, running into the elevator once it finally arrives and skidding on the wet floor inside. Wet? Yes, the floor of the elevator has a large puddle in the middle of it. Mitsuko follows in, once again holding her sword close to her hip. 

Before he can select a floor, the elevator doors close and it begins descending. It stops at Greenhouse 3. The doors open and Shun nearly bowls over London and Lucky, who seem to have called the elevator themselves. London is leaning heavily on Lucky, despite their height difference, and is dripping wet and sporting a significant head wound. Lucky, meanwhile, grabs Shun’s wrist as he runs past.

“Boss-- Shun, don’t-” he tries to say, but Shun pulls his wrist away from Lucky. He runs forward, Mitsuko following. He needn’t go far. Shun collapses by the side of the fountain, where a pair of feet can be seen hanging over the edge. In the water, just below the surface, is the body of...

Fear And Loathing [Motive]

Even after the initial incident with MonoHELEN appearing is slowly dealt with, one way or another, you continue to see them walking around - or staggering, as the case may be - occasionally arguing with themselves, occasionally fighting with themselves, occasionally just leaning against something listlessly. You may have even seen them fall through a wall when their ability to interact with the environment failed. 

And while this all has an undertone of menace, there is something worse coming. 

The schedule marches ever onward.

The speakers crackle to life.

“F... fffear...”

Their speech is ragged. You recall, when they last spoke, that it sounded like HELEN and Monopython were trying to shout over each other, succeeding in turns, sometimes wrestling for use of their mouth. But here, they speak in unison.

“I hhhhate... ffffear...”

Another voice cuts in, sounding slightly panicked.

“Just hold on, hold on-”

It’s cloaked, unmistakably Paris. You haven’t heard him lose his nerve in this manner before. Perhaps he doesn’t know he’s being broadcast. MonoHELEN speaks as though they haven’t heard him.

“I’m... sssscared... I hate it... I hhhate thissss feeling...”

“I’m working on it, don’t give in! I need a little more time-”

They draw a rattling breath, and let it out in an angry hiss, between teeth that don’t match in a mouth the wrong size to fit them all in.

“You all... -looking d-d-d-d-down on me I know it Iknowitiknowitiknowit-”

A screech of static.

“HELEN, n-”

Paris’ voice abruptly cuts off into silence.

“You... will feel fear...”

The broadcast ends.

Come With A Holler, Come With A Call, Come With A Good Will Or Not At All [Event]

The station is abuzz with talk of the situation at hand. MonoHELEN has been seen sloping about the lower levels of the station, a miserable creature comprised of the worst parts of both their components. Whether sobbing in agony and fear, or screaming in a rage of uncontrollable emotion and hate, they make a depressing, dangerous figure to encounter.

7 days after the last playtime, you all wait for the announcement. The inevitable, over-cheerful call. 

It does not come.

The usual time arrives, then passes. 

No call from Paris, either. No Trojans bickering...

Then you hear it.

A small, shaky voice. Two voices, really, mingling into each other, cutting each other off, sharing words and then missing them out because they thought the other would say it instead. On some of the screens - but not all, you are confronted with a broken, glitching image.

“... can’t... I can’t do this-s-s-s...”

A shuddering breath.

“Don’t... come near... no... don’t leave...”

All at once, no matter where they are, every student finds themselves with sudden company.

Having lost even their ability to display more than a default wire-frame, it seems that MonoHELEN has begun to fall apart even more than before. This can’t mean anything good - for the welfare of the station, or for you.

[OOC: Student may now be struck with blinding migraines at random intervals. They will last only a few minutes, but render them immobile for the time.

To The Fairest [Event]

The events of playtime - unusual and interrupted though they were - have spread via word of mouth through the rest of the students who weren’t in attendance. Some strange, high-modern house containing outdated computer parts hidden in a safe. A burning wooden cabin in the middle of a desert, with two dead bodies and a disturbing, overheard conversation on a car radio. A rainy neon cityscape, discarded phones and relationships and crashing waves. What did all these things mean? How were they connected at all?

A burst of static, and a flicker of the station’s lights. You turn your attention to the screens that litter the walls, to see the ever present symbol of the Trojan horse become slowly consumed by static...

The golden apple sits in its place. You absorb this for all of a few seconds, before the cloaked voice comes over the speakers.

“Hello. This is Paris.”

Another Trojan. You’ve only heard the name Paris a few times - muttered irritably by his fellows, perhaps from fellow students speculating. But this is the first time he’s addressed the whole station directly.

“I would like to formally apologize for the uncomfortable events that occurred in the previous trial. Things from now on will be under control. Under my control, specifically. I’m sure that the Trojans are listening in right now, and I would like to personally invite them all to rethink their course of action from here on out.”

The voice is, of course, cloaked. He speaks in a measured, calm, authoritative manner, at the very least seeming to be sure of his path.

“Being in their ranks for the time I was means that I know things that they would otherwise not like to be shared - as has been made readily apparent. Because they have gone against my will numerous times now, I have decided that they will now work according to my plans, or we’re through. Let’s welcome our three contestants.”

The image on screen changes from that of the apple, to a candid looking photo of a middle-aged asian woman.

“You see, our lovely friend Odyssey, or might I say Wang Chen, has been involved with both the Yakuza and the Triad in order to get where she is now, and she’s not even happy here, is she? Perhaps she wouldn’t have turned into the substance-dependent Trojan we know today if her brother hadn’t went and got himself killed. You have to wonder if she feels guilty for that. Maybe continuing her sociology studies in university would’ve helped her understand why she stuck around him for so long. God knows she wouldn’t have understood her brother any other way.”

Again the image changes, this time to a young woman caught mingling with others who are similarly dressed in all their finery.

“Don’t get me started on Aeneid. This lovely lady’s name is Gloria Fortunata Maria Luiz y Barca. Did you hear that right? Barca? How quaint. It turns out that she is our dear friend Felicia’s cousin. See, only a branch of the Barca family is Open Air - the main family is the legacy behind Carthage Security Industries, where Gloria is up to become the next CEO. Would you trust her with your safety after this? She can’t even keep her own identity safe from a century old snake. Or from a teenage kid. Yikes. Better hope your home isn’t covered by her. You might start getting nasty… Trojans.”

There’s the muffled sound of... laughter? It seems he’s laughing at his own joke. It wasn’t even that great... But before you can linger on it, another photo comes up, this time of a man caught in the middle of barking orders at a number of men in military uniform.

“Last but not least, there’s former Lieutenant General of the North American Army, and now-commander of the rogue militia group Crazy Horses, Maxwell Hunt. Formerly known as Ilidad. I mean Iliad. ...No, I do mean Ilidad. He used to be one, until he murdered his family in cold blood. Ouch. How horrible of a human being would you have to be to do that for no reason? Seems like our number one bear fighter is also our number one kin killer. I doubt his army friends would like hearing that one. I wonder how long it’ll be before he snaps on his ‘loyal’ militia boys, too...”

The image returns, once more, to that of the golden apple. 

“Before you start thinking that I am affiliated with the wretched snake, consider that I am not. I’d rather be dead than affiliated with him. I am neither for the Trojans nor for Monopython anymore. I am Paris, and this is my station now. I am making it my mission to free HELEN from the horrible situation the Trojans put her into. I am making it my mission to show the world what the Trojans have done, not only to us on the station, but to everyone. Things from now on will be changing. I am in control. You, Trojans, have no power here anymore. You aren’t getting away from this, even if it kills me. 

“And to whom it may concern... I do hope you feel better.”

And with that, the broadcast ends.

Burn It Down, Built It Up [Map Update]

It’s been a few days of tension. In the haze of everything happening, none of you particularly thought about the pattern of things. Maybe it would be different this time, anyway. But after a long absence, the IDs ping with a new update, and there’s a new button to press on the elevator. When you finally pick up the will to do so, you emerge into an area smelling strongly like a forest...

To The Pain [Event 3/3]

What follows is best described as a cacophony of noise.

You can pinpoint the exact moment when the barrier, whatever it may have been, is removed, because of the sickening lurch you all feel in the pits of your stomachs, and the strange semi-numb tingling sensation in the back of your heads and under your skin as the Digital Sea tries to accommodate what is happening.

Monopython- HELEN- someone is screaming, not that that’s unusual for a switch back at the end of a trial, but the problem becomes apparent when it doesn’t stop. The once proud snake writhes, snapping between forms, jumping around the room and clipping through walls, ceiling, furniture, people. You see HELEN running as though trying to escape something, before she turns into MP doing the same, and then back, both with the same desperate look of someone pursued by something they can’t comprehend nor ever wish to. 

Whatever they’re running from, they’re not getting away from it.

They reach the doors of the elevator, pounding on it, before recoiling back, scratching at their own skin, trying to pull something off them, pull themselves apart. 

Proportions out of whack, staggering about in apparent agony, MonoHELEN falls to their knees, wracked with sobs, unable to settle into a single form.

The Straw That Broke The Horse’s Back [Event 2/3]

So there they are. Before you, after all this time. You know their faces now. Everyone does. The whole world knows exactly who they are, and given a few minutes, and the world’s police databases, they’ll know everything else about them too. 

You can figure out who they are from their voices at this point. The drill-sergeant looking guy with the dog tags is Iliad, barking orders at the haggard looking lady with the lab coat and braid, Odyssey. The young lady standing at the back, slowly lowering her hands from her face, is therefore Aeneid. Her eyes meet the last camera running.

“Enough!”

Despite being the youngest in the room, the steeliness in her voice causes her fellow Trojans to pause what they’re doing. Monopython is still giggling. Aeneid narrows her eyes.

“Snake.”

The snake, interrupted, rolls his eyes. 

“What.”

Aeneid draws herself up straight.

“We've been letting you have relative control over this game and roam pretty free under some conditions, we've been keeping taking good care no one invades your system, not to mention keeping your shoddy code together. But if you'd like this semi-cooperation to cease, the pleasure will be all mine.”

Monopython scoffs at the mention of cooperation, but before he can make any sort of snide remark on the matter, Aeneid speaks again.

“Odyssey, take down the data exchange barrier.”

Clearly that term means something more to them than it does to you, because Odyssey and Iliad look at each other before looking back at Aeneid. Odyssey is the first to speak.

“I mean- are you sure? That’s-”

Aeneid interrupts her, voice level but eyes burning. 

“Do it.”
