RIP Jonathan, you should be on the beach with your fiancee and her girlfriend and her fiance hashing out sleeping arrangements after your double-wedding and instead you're listening to Dracula and his trash fire polycule complaining about who gets first dibs on your arteries 😔

I could not enter it, as I had not the key of the door leading to it from the house, but I have taken with my kodak views of it from various points.

These type of details can appear as surprising at first because the Dracula book is set in the late victorian era, giving the expected feeling that everything must be ancient compared to our modern times...

Yet, this is Jonathan's kodak camera:

Once we the readers grab all of these details (starting with this one), and put them all together, it gives the picture of the whole novel being rather futuristic. Considering how one of the elements of the gothic genre is how the past collides with the changes of the present, it's very fitting that Jonathan talks about the ancient english building that the Count wants to move in... With the help of a modern camera.

Upon reflection, the tendency of Dracula adaptations to treat Jonathan as a bit character is probably inextricable from their tendency to treat the episodes concerning his time in Castle Dracula as a fairly tedious piece of exposition to a story which truly begins with Dracula's arrival in London.

I know this is blasphemy, but I feel like Dracula is the one novel that might actually benefit from being split into multiple films. Do an intimate bottle-episode psychological horror piece covering Jonathan's confinement to and eventual escape from Dracula's castle, so in the next movie we actually have proper context for his whole... everything.
