Doctor Faustus (1967)
The Tempest (1979) Derek Jarman
I used to post monthly recaps of films, books, music, and whatever other media I was consuming, but over the last couple of years I had fallen off. I fell into a rut of just watching and listening to the same things on rotation. So, I’m bringing this back as a way of keeping myself accountable for changing things up a bit.
what i’ve been reading:
- “why on earth have i seen the same broadway show 13 times?” taffy brodesser-akner
- the idea of theatre: study of ten plays francis furgusson
what i’ve been watching:
- blue moon (2025)
- you can count on me (2000)
- tally brown, new york (1979)
- ziegfeld follies (1945)
- the last days of disco (1998)
- glutenberg bibles’ video essays on youtube
what i’ve been listening to:
- “girl from the gutter” - kina
- “he wasn’t man enough” - toni braxton
- “when it doesn’t work out” - cass elliot
- “parachute” - hayley williams
- we live in cairo - off-broadway cast recording
Tally Brown, New York is one of those movies that I’ve always wanted to watch but have never been able to. To the point where I had all but given up on ever seeing it. When I found out it was streaming on Criterion, I left work mid-day.
Ziegfeld Follies, Vincente Minnelli (1945)
Metropolitan, Whit Stillman (1990)
The most aesthetically but least thematically “Christmas” Christmas movie.
