No I've been saying this forever and no one's been listening!
Spongebob doesn't flinch at his own queerness. He dresses in drag, he doesn't mind pronoun misusage, he doesn't care that his friendships come off to others as unconventional. He knows who he is. which is an asexual (canon by both Stephen Hillenburg AND Nickelodeon) sponge. He's openly fluid in his expression and is full of a love and hope that has been crushed out of Squidward a long time ago. Squidward is bitter from his past situationships with people like Squilliam and his only outlet for personal expression is through his art and music which people respond to with abject hatred and disgust, and because it is so personal to him, in fact it IS HIM because he is the subject of his artistic serial form is his literal face, the people are thus rejecting him personally.
Squidward secretly likes Spongebob, not because he's attracted to him but because he represents that sappy doe eyed queer twentysomething that Squidward used to be, and outwardly resents Spongebob because of how readily he's accepted by the community. What Squidward can't or flatly refuses to accept is that the town would be willing to accept him as well if he ever did come out of the closet but he's weighed down in his own bitterness and loathing both towards himself and others. The times where he creates art that speaks to others or when he plays the clarinet well in the show are all instances where his facade slips and he loses his inhibitions either through violent anger or when he feels genuine confidence rather than forcing it into his work. He CAN make beautiful art and he CAN play the clarinet but he choses to shoot himself in the foot in a self fufilling prophecy of miserable failure because ultimately he believes he is a failure and that he deserves his misery.
He works a dead end job suffering from a bad case of twink death and dreams of fame because he's convinced that fame is the only way he's going to get acceptance from the people of Bikini Bottom and his deep unhappiness can only be shed through self acceptance. It may have been different for Squidward back in the day, but Bikini Bottom is ready for him and is waiting for the day when he finally says "I'm ready."
jay, i have a feeling things are going to work out okay for us

Matt and Mara - Shadowboxer
matt johnson in operation avalanche (2016)
lick his wound wednesday
losing my fucking mind over the the next movie matt's set up to direct starring finn wolfhard about the drug smuggling bust and that stef literally worked there when it went down and was so unfazed by it which is so funny. plus id be willing to bet she told jay at the time and jay told matt and was like. hey.. wouldn't it be funny if we turned this into a movie somewhere down the line
now who let them into the backrooms.
filthy, filthy read
matt johnson + i want you to love me - fiona apple
i was just thinking about the web series and the viceland show and how they are two different canons with different rules, much like other consistent plots for shows and characters. (eg. much like how wile e. coyote's plans blow up in his face and he can never catch the road runner)
the only rule in the web series as far as i am is that they never say why they want to play at the rivoli. however in the show, it feels like many rules are in play:
from what i personally believe, the following rules are:
don't ever talk about money in a tangible sense unless it's pivotal to the plot at that point. (such as getting all the money for the float or having no money to buy chicken nuggets). their income is either finite or infinite depending on the current situation they are in. it's kinda like the dude from 'the big lebowski', and how throughout the film he's either quite wealthy or just getting by, from his royalties. but to matt and jay it doesn't matter because how they present themselves doesn't give you an insight into either
matt and jay don't know anyone except for their camera man (jared). they live in their own bubble and whenever they do try to interact with others it's like a bad and awkward attempt at first contact with another species. any connections they make are fleeting and obscure
no consoles after the 'n64' exist. they mention 'secret of mana' so the snes clearly exists and jay plays 'diablo' on the piano so they know PC games
they never state why they want to play at the rivoli (it's heavily implied, and it is stated in the film though)
they could easily play at the rivoli but they are always self-sabotaging their plan or one another
they don't ever play the same song twice or even have real songs. nirvana the band aren't even a band, they are like the band you formed in highschool where you planned to write a song but never did it
never mention nirvana or kurt cobain, etc
no series problems from the last episode will effect the next. only personal drama carries over. so jay wanting to leave the band would follow over. but them being chased by the police for robbing a bank, kidnapping a child, sneaking into sundance or having to pay back thousands of dollars is never to be mentioned except as references as some obstacle they were able to get over
i mean again, this is just how i see it
to an extent, matt and jay are like moronic creatures trapped in a time loop of their own nostalgia and capabilities, and it's especially represented throughout the film as jay attempts to break that cylce with a solo act, and furthermore changing time and being by himself. jay is able and can break the cycle but knows that matt is the only one out there he's ever cared about to not do so.
and that's totally not important at all
who the hell edited jay's wiki stating his death happened yesterday???? i actually got the fright of my life
for matt, after the success of blackberry he was like "i'm gonna make a ntb movie" and everyone around him was like don't do it you shouldn't do it it's a waste of your time sitting him down etc
and jay describing himself at the time "i'm with you, and saying it was a really smart decision" and matt interrupting him calling him the devil on his shoulder in a playful tone and that he was "manipulated"
and then matt going on to say how he had the world in the palm of his hand after blackberry and "people were acting so crazy" (?) and then jay goes "and now the world is mine."
and then matt goes "take it." (???) and they continue on with the conversation.
