unsure how much nirvanna the band knowledge you have, but it started as a self produced web series in 2008 and then later ran for two seasons on vice in 2017. i'd say that the core comedic drive of matt and jay as characters is that underneath the named joint goal of getting a show at the rivoli, jay is always trying to leave matt and matt is always tricking jay into staying. this is certainly viewable in the movie, and differs based on iteration.

the web series is the least sterile version of matt and jay. it features the only real romantic subplots - chiefly jay sleeping with matt's sister and then breaking up with her because he wants to stay with matt (episodes four and six) and jay bringing a girl to their apartment and matt going to lengths to ruin it for him (bonus episode peanuts). there's also an episode of the web series centred on the band briefly breaking up and matt punishing jay for it (episode seven - don't even want to say more, you need to experience the last three minutes of this episode without knowing anything). web series matt and jay still have other things in their lives outside of each other, which means that they often have a much more volatile and much more gay reaction to one another stepping outside the bounds of nirvanna the band.

when they returned to these characters ten years later, their characters are less autofictive and more crystallized into sitcom archetype versions of themselves. vice series matt and jay are entirely unmotivated by sex/romance - it's just them and their arrested development alone in the house they moved into together trying to get a show at the rivoli. jay is still trying to leave matt, be it at their canada day buffet together (1x07) or, in what matt johnson has called the most heartbreaking episode of the show, where jay goes to a party without matt and matt does a mrs doubtfire to keep hanging out with him (2x03). this version of matt and jay is pretty close to matt and jay, in that they've settled into a sort of domesticity beyond the rivoli plans and seem to have cut everything else out of their lives that doesn't serve either of those things. (no easily accessible online version of the vice series anymore, but it's on disney+ now if you're american and on aug. 7 in canada)

if you're talking about real actual guys matt johnson and jay mccarrol, their whole deal is a lot less quantifiable. they've spent their entire adult lives dedicated to making nirvanna the band. they met in high school, and jay later dropped out of the berklee college of music, found an apartment for them to live in on queen street, and convinced matt to make a web series with him. jay has composed the scores for all of matt's feature films to date, many of which matt only made to begin with to keep finding new funding for nirvanna. they're incredibly codependent, have said their nirvanna the band characters are based on themselves and their actual dynamic, matt keeps casting jay lookalikes to betray him in films. but! they're also both in relationships with much younger women who are female versions of themselves. so who's to fucking say what's going on there.
