Matt's fixation on childhood and returning to it is so fascinating as someone with a completely opposite experience. In a lot of ways, I relate to needing to hang on to being a child as an adult, but it comes from a place of carving out what I never got to have. I had a pretty awful time as a child, teen and young adult. I grew up very fast. I'm also intersex and had a precocious puberty, I don't actually really remember being prepubescent. Sometimes Matt talks in a way where childhood is this universally sacred thing. And yeah, I dunno, it's foreign to me. I love that about his work. Being an adult kid is awesome. I get the sense a chunk of his fans have a similar perspective, and I don't think he could have anticipated that

Matt has said a few times in interviews that he views Tony as a hopeful story, one about it never being too late to start again and all. That the 'negative' portrayal of Bourdain only heightens that hope, because we know that he becomes Bourdain, we know he becomes a distinguished chef and a writer and successful.

I don't want to diminish Bourdain's life and his heights, or his achievements, or the message at all. Its a good one. But I find that angle so interesting given, you know, we do know where it goes. We know he kills himself. Like, that's a pretty big wrinkle, right? In that idea? I love that a little. It's a jarring concept. You can try but you can't ignore that he will one day reach a low and give up. I dunno. I like the nuance of that. But also, like, yeah, it's miserable to think about. I haven't seen the film yet, but it will haunt me the entire time. The dichotomy has me really fascinated.
