What would be considered the proper terminology for identifying a female gargoyle?
Gargoyle or female gargoyle. Gargress is a misconception and not considered a canon term for the females :)
Why do you love Gargoyles?
It's still one of the greatest Disney animated series ever.
From the studio that put Eddie Murphy in The Haunted Mansion, Keira Knightly as a pirate and Mila Kunis as the Wicked Witch, we present another phenomenal miscasting with Kanye West as Goliath. We bring you another misunderstanding of source material by casting Ellen DeGeneres as Elisa Maza. With Kevin Costner as the villainous Xanatos. x
I donât quite know how this works, sharing directly from Patreon to Tumblr but lets see how it goes. This is an example of the kinds of sketches Iâm putting up on the Patreon feed for subscribers. But itâs kinda super nice so I think I can share some of these with the tumblr blog too.
It helps remind people I have a Patreon thing going on as well!
edit: it seems like since itâs currently flagged as a post for patrons, it brings you back to the front page upon clicking it. Thatâs odd though, considering that Iâm pretty sure I myself can view the item. Patreon still has some things Iâd like to figure out. But so far itâs been very valuable as a second ish blog.

Greetings, Fellow Fans!
One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled. It was a time of darkness. It was a world of fear. It was the age of gargoyles...
Happy 20th Anniversary to the best show (and fandom) around!! On this day, October, 24th, 1994, Disney released an innovative animated series that captured our imaginations and forever stole our hearts.Â
We are GARGOYLES!
Every time you say that Xanatos reformed or was redeemed, or that he âturned into a good guyâ you are endorsing âThe Goliath Chronicles.â
Friends donât let friends endorse âThe Goliath Chronicles.
Was anybody who thought Xanatos could be called an âanti-heroâ at the end of the series watching the same show as me?
Though I have to admit. Usually I get real frustrated with people who see redemption (or even heroism) where there is none, but in the case of Xanatos ⊠I have no trouble understanding why people want to see him that way. Heâs so smart. Heâs so charismatic. So smooth and classy. Heâs a winner. Who doesnât want to side with a winner?
Itâs just, the games he wins involve mutilating people at the genetic level. Convincing a bunch of illegally trafficked and naturally helpful migrants which he manipulated into near-immediate crime that heâs their only hope for sanctuary. Because he wanted a thing. And Xanatos is just so darn charismatic, people forget that. They want to see morality. They want to see redemption. They fit it in between the lines, even though everything Xanatos has done for anyone else has, ultimately, been a very good deal for him.
This is the meta level to why Xanatos is such an effective, scary villain. Heâs out for himself, facilitates horrible things in pursuit of what he wants, but heâs so darn smooth that people just reallywant to overlook that.
And if being perceived as the secretly moral antihero served him, heâd use it. Heâd use the hell out of it.
And by the time anyone who genuinely believed him to be any degree of moral realized their mistake, it would be too late for them.
Depending on what Xanatos wanted of them, anyway.
I think by the end of the series he had enough superficial trappings that to those not looking closely enough heâd come off as a good guy. I know as a kid when I got to the backend of the series I thought he was now a âgood guyâ. But in looking back on rewatches what initially came off as him being âgoodâ was just him not being antagonistic to the clan. I might be forgetting something, but after the Gathering he didnât use them in any schemes for his own gain and did do some things for their benefit, like trying to help Coldstone and giving them sanctuary at the end of season 2. But that stuff doesnât make him âgoodâ, it was more him paying them back.
I think on some level some people mightâve associated his actions or characterisation as far as his feelings for Fox and Alexander went as him being good. Because no one can care about thier family like that and be bad right? Except they can and routinely do. Yeah Xanatos cares about Fox and Alex and did he best to protect them and all, but that doesnât mean he is a changed man. He was like that before the Gathering too, when he was doing bad stuff.
They might also on a simplistic level think Xanatos canât be bad anymore because the Gargoyles are staying with him now and if theyâre the good guys they canât be staying with the bad guys. Again, it wasnât as cut and dry as that.
Totally. Itâs very easy to miss if you werenât watching the series straight through and going âhey wait a minute, Xanatos just got everything he wanted in the first place. And lost absolutely nothing at all in spite of all the terrible things heâs done and never amended.â
Heâs a good villain. And by âgood villainâ I mean âsuper effective villainâ because letâs face it. By the end of the series, our heroes still couldnât walk down the sidewalk (on a day not Halloween) without being shot at. Their lives were not perceived as worth preserving, they were not perceived as having worth as people by the general public (which Iâm really unhappy is still a topical racism metaphor, arguably even more so than it was back in the 90âs).
Meanwhile, Xanatos got everything he wanted from his first appearance. And more.
How was Gargoyles a unique and groundbreaking series? Many ways. Including that at the end of the (televised) series, the villain won.
Xanatos completely, without question, won, not necessarily against the heroes, but definitely through their lack of having won their quest for peace and basic dignity, through human societyâs continued rejection of the idea that someone not human could be deserving of what we consider basic human rights.
The villain won, while the series ended with the heroes still losing.
Xanatos as a villain should scare the crap out of everyone.
And holy shit, I hadnât even really internalized that until this very goddamn moment.
Because CONvergence Doubleplusgood. And quote from Aaron. And the fact that it HAD to be drawn. Because Matrix and Connie Mark II could be unstoppable.Â
Gargoyles Fan of the Week!
Due to the bouncing-off-the-walls excitement for CONvergence and my need to prepare my family for travel (packing for one baby is like packing for a small, diapered circus troupe...), Fan of the Week will be taking a two-week hiatus. For those of you who will be at CONvergence, can't wait to see you there, and for those who can't make it, Gargoyles Reawakening will do their best to bring CONvergence to you! Stay tuned for updates :D
This is a great time to send a reminder that Fan of the Week is always accepting nominations. Is there a Fan we haven't featured yet that you'd like to see? Let us know why they've earned a spot in your heart!
