Some think the national strategic oil reserves are stored inside a warehouse filled with millions of oil kept inside steel barrels. The U.S. stores emergency oil in hollowed-out subterranean salt caves—some large enough to fit the Empire State Building—not warehouses. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), the world’s largest, holds hundreds of millions of barrels of crude. A “barrel” is a 42-gallon unit, not a physical container. Above-ground steel drums would be costly, weather-vulnerable, and a fire hazard. Engineers use Gulf Coast salt domes in Texas and Louisiana. Fresh water is pumped in to dissolve the salt (solution mining); brine is extracted, leaving cylindrical voids. A single cavern can exceed 2,000 feet in height and hold over 10 million barrels. Salt is impermeable to oil and seals cracks under geological pressure, making the caverns leak-proof. This storage costs about one-tenth as much as steel tanks and keeps oil at a stable temperature. To retrieve oil, water is pumped into the bottom; less-dense oil floats up through pipes into the commercial pipeline network.
