No one wanted to make it. Honestly, I couldn’t raise a cent. And then it was just by chance that my partner-producer had a lunch with Luc Besson, who I’d worked with on Leon and The Fifth Element. Luc said, [in a very French accent] ‘I love Gary, I will do this movie!’ And he literally did the deal on a napkin. What Luc was putting on the table, it wasn’t quite enough to make the movie the way I wanted to make it, and so I made up the deficit.
