From a documentary on the Galapagos Finches, 1970s
No we don't understand ourselves. And by understanding I mean we don't cooperate with ourselves. Your eyes would see a thousand mundane things and a thousand melancholic souls and every time you would have a little empathy for them. You would have mercy on every little thing which seems to crack for a cause. You would feel for a broken vase but you never really feel for yourself. Do you? You think everyone should be given a chance to be happy and nobody deserves to be stuck in a forever loop of guilt and hurt , but you never really believe that for yourself. You never treat yourself as if you are the only thing you have got because if we look closely then really at the end of the day you've got nobody but you. But you deny to believe in yourself. And if you think you don't do any of this then let me tell you that you would have loved yourself even after doing a thousand mistakes because you would have told your friend "at least you tried" if he/she failed at something but you never really say that to yourself, you rather fill your chest with guilt and repeat "I hate myself for this" with every breath you take. If you would have understood yourself like you understand somebody you love, you would have filled yourself with courage to take another step which you could never. But you never really stop holding yourself by the throat and shouting in your ears that you are not capable and you should be better off dead. You beat yourself for every single small humanly mistake you do. You expect yourself to be good at things you have never did before. And you never really tell anyone what you are going through because you seem to think that everything inside of you is worthless and embarrassing. And you would wanna aid everyone and you would wanna heal a broken leg of a bird but you would never really care enough for your own heart. And I don't know who taught us to hate ourselves and I don't know when they talk about survival instincts, what do they really talk about? , do they talk about being selfish and surviving in the wild or do they talk about broken people always trying to break themselves more and trying to heal others even more.
