Iâve had a lot of girl friends
Thatâs âgirl space friendâ
Even though itâs just empty space.
I grew up not knowing that while I liked my girl space friends,
what I really wanted was a girlfriend.
I always assumed Iâd start liking boys
That it was perfectly normal
to really enjoy hugging my girl friends
And to some extent that was true
But thereâs a point when you have to realize that what you really want
is someone who can be your girlfriend-without-a-space.
Because the space is important.
The space means a lot to some people.
losing the space means losing their families.
So they have to live with the space
Because itâs the difference between someone you âloveâ and someone you âLoveâ
Itâs the difference between an open bedroom door and a closed one
Itâs the difference between a hug and an embrace
Because it isnât just space in the figurative
The space means they canât be close
For some more than others
Some people are ok with the space
Theyâve learned to live with it
Or theyâve lied to themselves about how much they really want it
But some people canât stand it
The space is so important to them
That they lose their lives over it
Because they fear they will never be able to get rid of it
The space is so important
Because it leads to other things
First, thereâs the space: âgirl space friendâ
Then it becomes âgirlfriendâ
And the space shouldnât be a big deal
Unless itâs going to go away
Because the space matters.
So, I wrote this poem back in February, when I was all angsty and single and crushing on my friend and on a poem-writing streak. I had actually completely forgotten about it until I was reading through my posting history elsewhere, and I found it again. Iâm not gonna lie, Iâm kind of impressed with myself.Â
As I was writing this, I kind of imagined it being spoken aloud, as opposed to being read, but I kind of like the idea that people can read it with their own intentions.Â
