More about Nevermoor because I love this series.

I really love Homer. (Wow so surprising the selective mute loves the character who doesn't speak and communicates through text).

But seriously Jessica Townsend writes different characters so well. The fact that he doesn't speak (willingly) is just a fact of life and the people around him accept it and it's cool.

I particularly love that one line (can't remember word for word) about how whilst Homer had given up speaking, he had not given up sarcasm or whatever it was.

I freaking love that line because it describes it so completely. Homer doesn't speak but he still has character and personality and it's not a detriment or anything; it's just a facet of his life.

I love Nevermoor.

Because Tumblr is very English speaking and some ppl like France a little too much I just want to remind you of a few things:

- France abolished the Code Noir 2 months ago. That law project that said hey you can enslave, mutilate, kill, cross breed, etc. black people at will bc they're not people they're property ? Yeah. Abolished 2 months ago. We are in July 2026.

- the last human zoo closed its doors in 1994 in France due to social pressure. Not bc they were running out of business, no. Ppl still visited that place until it closed its doors. No, it was bc (black) French people were fed up. That human zoo was specialized in displaying black (presumed Congolese) people in fake huts in enclosures, for white entertainment.

- now while this might no longer be the case, when I was growing up, I went to a French school (as in. It was an international French School w the French flag n all) and the way we were taught French geography was that France has the biggest and largest access to the sea in the world. And they'd show us a map of France and its colonies around the world. It's all occupied indigenous lands. I don't know if they still teach that. I hope not. But they absolutely did until I graduated high school in 2017. Again, I write this on July 21st 2026, for the record.

So the thing is boobs really do be jiggling. If having breasts has taught me anything it is that the ladies frolic. I don't even have that large of boobs but every time I go down some stairs all I can think about is that stupid quote about boobing breastily down the stairs or whatever it is because God Damn.

But anime and video game boob jiggling is like. The most uncanny valley shit I've ever seen nine times out of ten. You would think people this horny about tits would have actually looked at some but I guess not.

What we really need is some pervert to compile the ultimate visual guide to boob bouncing physics that's just like 500 hours of meticulously organized videos of breasts of different size and shape and under different fabrics bouncing around from a wide variety of physical movements so horny game devs can finally get it right and I don't have to be creeped out by women who appear to have surgically implanted softballs in their chest under skin made of rubber bands.

I've been looking through the Goodreads reviews of Fahrenheit 451 and a lot of them are from 2012 - 2015 or so and quite a substantial number of them talk about "this book is so overly pessimistic" (cough It's dystopian cough) "about humans and implies that people will all become lazy and stupid" and "i don't believe people will become mindless slaves to technology because it's a good thing" and "this book is just 'TV watchers are bad, book readers are good".

And in the modern day? When there are advertisements for AI summaries so you can say that you've read the classics to "keep up with your neighbours" (as the book says). I would love to put the whole monologue here but I'm listening to an audiobook and don't have the text in front of me. But anyway.

It's the same thing. It's the same rhetoric. The summaries and AI advertisements may as well be using this book as a marketing guide.

Also the people who think it's just about TV completely miss the point when it's about entertainment and distraction and how it's easier to consume shallow thoughtless tv shows than sit down and read a book. The juxtaposition between TV and books is about consuming vs understanding.

Just ten years later than those reviews and the world seems eerily similar already.

Also, there was at least one person saying that going to the extremity of book burning doesn't make sense WHEN THE BOOK EXPLAINS WHY IT'S LIKE THAT BECAUSE IF YOU GET RID OF SOMETHING THERE'S NO CONTROVERSY OVER IT THE BOOKS ARE USED AS A REPRESENTATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION BEING ERASED ALONGSIDE ACTUALLY BEING PHYSICAL BOOKS DID YOU NOT READDD THE BOOK????

Ahem. Anyway very annoying. The book isn't perfect by any means and a lot of the characters feel very disposable and reduced to single character traits but this book feels a lot more thematically centred so I can see why that isn't a priority.

ALSO to people complaining about sexism. Valid point but it was written by a white american man in 1953. That's not the medieval period but it sure as hell wasn't a particularly progressive time.

There are ABSOLUTELY many valid criticisms to be made about it. As a book it could be more well-written and structured. I feel like the book is used a lot more as a vessel for a theme and message than as a story if anything but as a result of that it makes sense that there are certain aspects that take priority.

(The character development does suck though.)

Nevermoor is my first time being deeply engaged in a small fandom and I have to say I'm surprisingly delighted. I love this fandom? The fics are all really good (genuinely I have yet to find one I don't like and the smaller pool of fics makes me a lot more open and therefore I find fics I like more easily. Everyone's so kind and inclusive. There are so many cool headcanons and theories and Bless the wonderful artists making the fandom go round. Truly a wunderful fandom to be in.

I'm disgusted with myself; what have I become?

No angst in sight; not a whisper of passing suicidal or depressive thoughts at all.

What is this? Why is this the only idea that I have been able to fully plan out with distinct scenes and progression and characterisation? Why is THIS the one fic idea that walked into my head fully formed?

... And why am I writing it about crochet which I DON'T know about when it was originally about knitting???

This isn't even that big of a deal.

I've written maybe 4 fics total and one of them I haven't updated since '24 and the other... well I have half a chapter written that's something at least.

One of them is just basically a scene re-write that I kinda hate.

The other is just angst no plot.

But it's not even as though I'm a dedicated angst MCD hurt no comfort writer.

And yet I am incredibly disappointed in myself. I wrote the entire plan of it in five minutes.

and in fighting antiblackness within canada and europe it is so so so important to acknowledge these places's participation in and benefit from the transantlantic slave trade. Slavery is not just the US's dirty past, it is a triangular industry lasting centuries that white people in the united states, canada, and europe benefitted from and continue to benefit from to this day. Slavery was good for white canadians and white europeans. They liked it. they encouraged it. they had slaves, they profited from the slave trade, and they used products grown from US slave labour in every day life. The slavery of Black people would not have been possible on the sheer scale at which it happened if it were not for active, consistent participation from europe and canada.

I freaking love the Nevermoor fandom because on ao3 the majority of fics are Gen but the SECOND most are F/F which is a RARITY in fandoms. And the female main character has both a male and female friend but she is basically never shipped with her male friend and instead is shipped with her female friend and that is the second most tagged relationship. (The second slash ship is between two characters that have never met but many people agree have joint custody over Morrigan).

But yay. Yuri!!!!
