If you're in Texas and you're trying to stay warm during the power outages, here's some tips from an Illinoisan currently living in Texas. Obviously battery powered heaters or heated blankets can be great, as is a fire in a fireplace. But if those aren't options for you, try:
1. You can use tape around the edges of doors and windows to prevent drafts, or use towels or blankets to stuff around it. We currently have blankets taped up covering our doors and towels taped over most of our windows. Avoid going into rooms with an outside wall or multiple/large windows, they're going to be colder.
2. If you're getting power back every now and then, fill a sock about 2/3 full with rice, lentils, or dry beans, stick it in the microwave for about 30 seconds at a time, checking to see when it's nice and warm. Then put it at your feet under a blanket.
3. If you have a gas stove, boil a pot of water. You can make tea or soup with it, but even just boiling water will help warm and humidify the home a little. Good for avoiding nosebleeds.
4. Set all your faucets to drip. Moving water in the pipes keeps them from freezing, which is good because you don't want them to burst.
5. Got a significant other? Kids? Pets? Cuddle them. Never underestimate how much it helps to have another warm body sharing a blanket with you.
6. Do NOT drink alcohol. Yes, it makes you feel nice and warm. It also causes you to LOSE body heat.
7. Move around! Even just bicycling your legs will get your blood flowing, which will help warm you up. Then you can go right back to bundling up.
Signal boost this if you can, texas has dangerously low temperatures (single digits Fahrenheit and lower) and people are without power or heat all over the state.
Ok,, you know those shirts that are like cut open and connected with like chain and it looks badass? Has anyone done that but instead of chains to conect the sides it’s like a crotched chain?
Hi my names Abby and I’ve been coping with my slowly worsening mental health by playing loose lips by Kimya Dawson. Specifically the “Remember that I love you” part
My very loving well meaning Immigrant mother who has memorized my depression habits: Your not in bed right? No? Ok so not that bad
Friendship is getting your roommate a handsanitizer holder that looks like a cat because she loves cats but also making the sanitizer itself cranberry because she gets UTIs all the time
Being a girl is passing around a bottle of wine with your roommates and realizing that you’ve all been coerced into sexual actions by men and never got much closure just because you technically ended up consenting
The fact that harry melling is slowly coming back to mainstream media is very cool. I feel like this is the best version a child actors career could go. Like he stayed out of any big scandals and then slowly started taking more jobs. Also like a good way to prevent being typecast
Here’s a reminder for me and other Jews who are recovering from an ED:
Don’t step on the scale during your fast. I know you want to but don’t. It won’t help and that’s not why you’re fasting today. Also don’t force yourself to fast. If you need food please eat or hydrate.
Stop erasing Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Judaism from your eulogies to her. Don’t apply your Christian ideals and listen to Jewish people who are telling you how Jewish people mourn death. Don’t talk about pearly gates or Jesus or any of that shit. It’s Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year and a day of reflection, and now is the time to reflect on what RBG has done for others throughout her life, and then focus on empowering those who are still living to follow in her footsteps. Baruch Dayan Ha’emet. Say a mourners Kaddish for her tonight and honor her as the powerful Jewish woman she was.
attached are also numbers for worldwide suicide hotlines. please reach out for help if you’re feeling hopeless.
The other night I was texting a boy I was seeing. Right as I was about to apologize for not being ready for anything sexual my roommate grabbed my phone and deleted the message. Highly recommend friends who don’t let you apologize for looking out for yourself

what really gets me about the argument that “americans are so selfish they can’t even care about others enough to stop the virus” is that we fucking did. the vast majority of americans, at great personal and financial cost to ourselves, went inside and distanced and took precautions and isolated and changed our lives to slow the spread and keep our loved ones and strangers safe. we did that for months, even when the government offered piss poor assistance and unemployment skyrocketed and food bank lines lengthened and the death counts climbed and parents with young children reached a breaking point, we still did it. the polling still shows that the vast majority of americans are more worried about easing restrictions too soon even if it hurts the economy. americans give a shit. we care. we made the sacrifices to give our government the time to figure out and implement a plan — to find a way to keep us safe and as healthy as possible and to use the power of the federal government to protect small businesses and feed our children and put a roof over our heads and create education campaigns to get people to socially distance and wear a mask for fucks sake. we did that, and at the end of months of sacrifice they decided that it wasn’t worth the trouble and have left us at the whims of our governors and local officials, left us at the mercy of our employers, left us to die.
americans aren’t selfish — our minority-rule government is — and it’s left us to die.

i don’t know how to say it but please keep an eye on Hong Kong. it is now illegal for people in hk to speak out or ask for international support/foreign aid under the crime of collusion with foreign forces. a new national security agency is coming to hk to enforce this and they are authorized to surveillance those they suspect. The population of 7.5 million people are all expected to comply esp since they are installing officers to prevent protests in the wake of the bill
any mention of black lives matter has disappeared off my dashboard so i thought y'all might want to know that police stormed a peaceful vigil in memory of elijah mcclain, attacking mourners with pepper spray. families were there. children were affected. this movement isnt over just because it's no longer trendy.
