the folds between her brows deepened at leo’s explanation – that wasn’t exactly the side-effect she’d expected. they’d seen hundreds of cases of poisoning in the emergency room, but none that exhibited nocturnal superhuman abilities. “unfortunately i don’t think i’ve actually heard of anything that does that. but,” rory pulled away to sling the stethoscope over her neck, “your vitals seem normal. we’ll repeat them come night time and the mean time i’ll run a few tests on that vial until caitlin gets here, she might know more about this than i do.”

“so what happened?”

He wasn’t completely surprised to hear that the young medic hadn’t come across anything similar to his particular predicament before. Even in Central City where they had a particle accelerator explode on them. “At least one part of me is normal,” he drawled, a brief flicker of his usual sass creeping into the tone. Nodding at the suggestion, he agreed it would be wise to recheck once the sun was down, all things considered.

“I was hit by a dart from a future scientist.A really nasty one who didn’t mind splicing meta genes.”

“If it helps, you’re not alone in that feeling.” Nyssa told him, winking across the bar to the previous patron she had beaten, who gave her a sour look in response. “Coming up.” She chuckled, putting her cue down on the table and heading up to the bar to order both the nachos and a margarita pitcher. “I do have questions.” She admitted after a moment, seating herself at the bar as the pitcher was brought out, pouring both of them a full glass. “You said you had combat training, so you were military? Or militia?” She quirked an eyebrow at him. He didn’t carry himself like a trained soldier, but the romantic freedom fighter? That was a little easier to picture.

Slotting his cue back into the rack on the wall, he shared a commiserating look with the barfly who’d fallen for the hustle before joining Nyssa at the bar. Hopping up onto one of the tall stools, he leaned his elbows on the polished wood, a little smile on his face as she poured his drink. “I thought you might.” Taking his glass, he lifted it in a little toast to her win before answering her question. “Militia. Where I’m from World War Two ended differently, and the people were constantly fighting back against the oppressive government. I never had formal training. But if you didn’t learn fast in the Resistance you wound up dead.”

Carter’s grin widened as his teasing was returned in kind, nodding to Leo in acknowledgement. “An old friend on board is always a happy occasion. Though I think we can find you better than the couch, should be a bunk or two that’s free.” He assured the other man, before shrugging off his thanks with an easy smile. “I know what it’s like to have the weight of the world on your shoulders. Or hell, just the weight of superpowers. If I can make it easier for you to carry that, I’m gonna.”

“I never could fathom how many extra bunks you could fit into each of the cabins in this ship.” Leo mused, pleased at being called an old friend. This band of misfits were very welcoming, they reminded him a lot of the core group of the resistance back in his world. “Superpowers.” Leo shook his head, still trying to wrap his mind around the fact he now had those. “Not sure I’ll ever get used to them, but we’ll try.”

“Interesting at least. But I’ll try and make it fun.” Carter teased with a wink before shrugging as Leo wondered out loud. “Don’t think it’ll be a problem. If only because Sara tends not to say no to things that make the crew happy. She acts tough but she’s mush on the inside.”

“Oh,” the playful drawl was back full force as he replied encouraged by the wink from the other man, “I’m sure you will, Carter.” The apt description of the Waverider’s formidable captain earned a laugh and he wondered if Carter dared call Sara mushy to her face. “I shall have to try and make the crew happy with my presence then. That way she can’t kick me out.” turning to the screen, he finally shut down the analysis program. “Thank you. I feel better, despite still not knowing what exactly has happened.”

Nyssa paused briefly in surprise at his words, eyeing him with newfound curiosity at the revelation. “Well, that is one mystery solved… raises a few more, but it does make a lot more sense why you’re now following the path you are.” She shrugged, before potting the final ball with a small smirk. “Extra cheese.” She confirmed with a small nod.

Smiling at the words, he gave a nod. “I do enjoy being an enigma, however if you have questions, I’m feeling generous, so ask them.” Handing over the last of her winnings as the black ball disappeared into the pocket, he nodded toward the bar. “I feel as though I have been thoroughly hustled. Consolatory margarita time.”

“Sure, should be fun.” Carter mused with a small chuckle at the offer. “Not every day I get to see a friend gain superpowers - which is actually surprising given our line of work.”

“Excellent.” Leo smiled, this time more enthusiastically than before. “Fun might not be a completely appropriate word, but we’ll see.” He actually felt a lot more at ease knowing a seasoned superhero would be around to assist should he need it. “I wonder if Captain Lance will mind me taking the couch for a mission or two.”

“Well… yeah.” Carter admitted with a small laugh at Leo’s words. “That was my first thought, but if we’re ruling out bloodlust… well, the Kryptonians apparently get their powers from a yellow sun, right? Something to do with the radiation and how it interacts with their physiology. If something you came into contact with changed your physiology, maybe it’s reactive to something similar. Would explain why it only seems to happen at night.”

“We both had the same idea.” Leo sighed, a small smile coming to his lips despite the nagging worry he was feeling. Everything about what Carter said made a certain kind of sense, though he couldn’t pinpoint what was giving him his powers. “I suppose, though it would be the moon or the stars in my case. I suppose I should see what else I can do once the sun goes down. Care to help?”

“You’ve had training before then?” Nyssa cocked her head in curiosity at that. Even if it was simple self-defence, she didn’t know many career criminals who had formal combat training. “I’ll give you my card once I wipe the floor with you in 3,” She sunk one ball, “two”, another, until the 8 ball was the last for her to sink, though she couldn’t get a clean shot on it. “I can taste my victory nachos already.” She grinned.

“I have, yes.” Leo smiled, knowing that the curiosity was likely down to Nyssa knowing Leonard’s reputation, and he decided to come clean about which earth he was actually from. “I’m not actually the Leonard Snart of this earth. Where I’m from, I had combat training. But my self defense could do with some updates.” Watching as she potted the last few balls she needed, Leo chuckled, “extra cheese?” He managed to pot a couple of the balls he needed, before the next one refused to sink.

Mick had been around people with powers of different types for a while, and these sounded more unique than most. “Huh, just at night? That’s wild, but I’m sure you can still figure out how to put them to use best.” It was funny, the Snart he knew would surely have used powers under the cover of darkness to make himself richer once upon a time. But Leo… he was an entirely different sort, and you could be sure his powers would only be used for good. “Maybe it’s some kind of anti-solar thing? Or they get charged up during the day? Science really isn’t my thing, but I’m sure somebody’ll have an answer for you. You just gotta ask the right egghead.”

“It is, also sort of fun?” He gave Mick a look, a tiny impish smile pulling at his lips. “You Legends have missions at night? Perhaps I’ll test these new powers out with you. The bureau are not exactly fond of different.” Mick’s suggestions weren’t as unfeasible as they sounded. With a husband who was made of sunlight however, things could become tricky. “Egghead. Raymond? Cisco? One of them would fit the bill.”

“Okaaaay.” Cater drawled as he thought over anything that could clue him into what was happening to Leo. “I mean, I’ve- well I have heard of something that caused similar symptoms but I always assumed it was a myth - made up, you know? But then I exist so…”

“A myth... Like a vampire? No blood lust, so it can’t be that.” The same thought had crossed his mind, it seemed about crazy enough to be true. But he hadn’t nibbled on Ray during the night so he’d quickly ruled out the idea. “You and Kendra are pretty unique. What else did you think it might be?”

“you wanna tell me what those are?” rory slotted the stethoscope into her ears as she hooked leo to the machine to check his vitals, “how have you been feeling?” 

“I’ve been feeling fine. During the day.” Leo’s gaze followed Rory’s movements as she worked. “Night is a different story. I can see in the dark, lift a car and who knows what else.”

“Forgive me.” Nyssa chuckled at his brief elation, before nodding a little at his words. “No, it isn’t everything. I earn enough to keep myself fed, clothed and a roof over my head, that’s enough for me.” She shrugged. She had never had many personal possessions to begin with in the League, she had no great desire to surround herself with things when there were far more important things for her to work towards. “Though I never say no to a new client, if you need training in that area.”

“Forgiven.” Leo replied a little smile on his face as he gave a nod. Her outlook on life was very similar to his own with regards to what was important. Simplicity was much better in his opinion than extravagances. Something his Earth 1 siblings tended to disagree with. “I may have been a little slack on keeping up with my training. So I’ll take you up on that.” He knew Ray would be glad he could take care of himself even without his gun to hand.

“It does have that effect on people.” Carter nodded with faux gravitas at Leo’s comment, before frowning a little at the explanation of his abilities and how they had manifested. “Only at night? Have you noticed any other changes to your vision in light, or anything else during the day? Do you feel more… energized than usual, or have faster reflexes?”

Chuckling, Leo nodded, he had absolutely no doubt that Carter’s face had distracted many folk over the years. “No, nothing during the day. I haven’t really tried doing anything with the new found abilities during the day.” Leo frowned then, wondering if perhaps he should. “I do feel more awake once the sun goes down.”

rory took the small vial from leo, preparing a glass slide to slot into the machine’s analyzer before she turned a concerned gaze to the man while the machine did its work, “it might need a second.. i might feel better if i examine you, you know, make sure your heart is not on the cusp of exploding or something. how are you feeling?”

“Presently, I feel fine. The only side effects I noticed are... unusual.” Leo tilted his head, considering whether to allow Rory to examine him. He supposed it wouldn’t hurt. “Okay, you can make sure it won’t explode.”

Judging solely on the tone of his voice, Mick could tell that Leo didn’t appreciate being dosed with anything and especially not in the manner which it was delivered. Furrowing his brows, he listened to him explain. It didn’t sound good, at any rate, even if it meant apparently he had new powers.

“Huh… those sound like benefits to me, although usually something that sounds too good to be true usually comes with a hell of a price tag. And even if you’re not the Snart I used to partner with, I doubt you’re any more interested in paying any kind of price. Noticed any bad side effects yet?”

“Mmm, perhaps they will prove useful in future.” Leo had to admit that if they developed further then he could put them to good use for the Bureau. It was just puzzling that they only manifested after dark. As Mick continued, he nodded, it hadn’t escaped him that there could be some sort of price attached. Though he very much doubted it would be monetary. “No side effects. Just no powers during the day.”

“More fool you.” Carter replied with a small chuckle at Leo’s teasing. He nodded as the other man directed his attention to the screen, cocking his head at the readings before folding his arms over his chest as he considered Leo’s words. “How long after exactly, and what ‘things’ are we talking?”

“Your handsome face throws me off my game, obviously.” Leo laughed, brain helpfully reminding him how ridiculous this all was to make the sound more genuine. “Four months ago I was injected with this. Three days ago I noticed something off. I can see in the dark, with no need for goggles. I can also lift my car. But only at night.”

“I prefer cats myself - they’re more independent, require less time. Perfect for someone working long hours in civil service.” Nyssa shrugged. She narrowed her eyes at him in faux warning when she caught his smile at her miss, letting out a small huff when he got the lead on her this time. “Your victory will be short-lived.” She warned as she sunk her next shot and lined up the next. “I teach self-defence at a small gym in the Glades.” She answered, her own cover as innocuous as his. “Not much money in it, but it’s rewarding.”

“Hmm, a cat. Interesting. People keep saying I have feline tendencies.” The suggestion did fit around the long hours he and Ray worked in their respective jobs. But he still didn’t like the idea of leaving an animal alone for so long. “Let me have this moment.” He chuckled, face dropping into a pout as she potted the next shot. “Well that’s something positive and constructive.” Leo gave an approving nod. Growing up where he did he knew the value of being able to handle yourself. “Money isn’t everything.”
