Naotoshi Shida answers questions about the anime industry on twitter
For the past few days, Naotoshi Shida has been answering questions submitted to him via app and posting his answers to twitter. He cannot speak English, but has invested in some high quality translation software in order to interact with the english speaking audience.
I love him for doing this. He’s said a lot of interesting things, so for those who aren’t on twitter, I thought I’d screen shot some of his answers to questions so you can all see.
If you’re unaware of who Shida is, here’s a brief introduction.
Naotoshi Shida is AMAZING, and his work on Dragon Ball Super and One Piece is hugely popular thanks to his ability to not only animate breathtaking sequences, but he has stellar art as well.
Shida’s style is hugely recognizable and his animation consists of two very distinct style choices. Nothing ever moves in a straight line and his shading is very distinct. You’ll usually find smoke with his sequences, and if not smoke, he’ll animate light, water or whatever element is available in his “wiggly” style.
Shida’s been around since forever, animating since the early days of the original Dragon Ball anime.
Unfortunately, his work can be difficult to pick out in Z because he was usually overly corrected by his superiors who didn’t appreciate his unique style. These days, Shida gets a wide berth to work on sequences (a privilege that almost nobody in the business enjoys) and his work is allowed to stand out.

Of course, his two most famous sequences were the ones he did for the battle of Gods Movie which was 53 seconds and for One Piece Gold which was a whopping 4 minutes long.
So here’s some of his answers to questions asked by English speakers. Remember, he’s using translation software to read questions as well as answer them, so sometimes the answers might not make 100% of sense.
