Alligator at Wakulla Springs, Florida!
Highly recommend it for a visit, it’s a lovely park with some interesting history and cool wildlife. I even saw manatees during my visit!
Hey reptiblr, could I get the help of people familiar with blue tongue skinks? My friend has taken one in that belonged to a different family member of hers and needs help identifying the subspecies so she can make sure she gives him the proper care. (Our best guess right now is Merauke.)
Ignore the big sore on his hind end for now, that is being treated. From what I understand, the body condition in general isn’t great and tips on getting him back into top shape are also welcome.

Definitely an Indonesian species, but I’m not familiar enough with those species/subspecies to say for sure. I would recommend checking out the detailed care sheet at bluetongueskinks.net if you haven’t already. I don’t follow it exactly, but it’s a good jumping-off point.
If nobody on tumblr can give you an 100% confident ID on the species/subspecies (or if you just want a second opinion) I would recommend finding a blue tongue ID Facebook group or checking out the ID forum on bluetongueskinks.net.
Hope that helps!
Definitely a merauke!
What problems are there with body condition? A common issue is that Indonesian blue tongue species are kept in low humidity, so make sure humidity is at least 70% and your basking spot is at least 100 F. Skinks are pretty hardy, so as long as you provide him a proper set up and diet, he should be alright!
Pavo got a cage upgrade today! He’s now in a 40 gallon tank with a playsand and topsoil mix. He seemed to have a good time exploring!
Make sure you stay hydrated during these hot summer months!
Both of my skink cages got completely redone this weekend!
First picture is for my Kei Island blue tongue, Flash. Substrate is a mixture of topsoil, coconut coir mulch, and sphagnum moss. Tossed more moss and leaf litter with oak and magnolia leaves on top.
Second picture is for my northern blue tongue, Creature (you can even see him in the corner). Substrate is a mixture of topsoil and coconut coir mulch, with some sand to be added in soon since this is a desert-based species that doesn’t require high humidity. Also added a small amount of oak leaves and sea grape leaves on top.
They’re working out great so far! The Kei Island cage holds humidity very well, and the skinks seem to like burrowing with soil and leaf litter.
I love getting a photo with just the tiniest bit of tongue
