in search of wellness
I read a fantastic article in one of my Counseling Today magazine issues titled "In Search of Wellness" by Laurie Meyers. The article discusses the necessity of a holistic approach to counseling that integrates wellness. Wellness is defined as the integration of mind, body, and spirit. The article goes on to talk about how wellness can be integrated into counseling practice through nature and yoga. It even states, "Research has shown that even if people are sitting inside, a view of the natural environment - even in a mural or on a computer screen - reduces their heart rate and can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety." It also goes on to mention one counselor who conducts his sessions on nature paths to get his clients to open up without the anxiety of sitting face to face in a stuffy office and how being in nature does not require "hard attention" that makes us grumpy and drained, such as when we watch tv or look at the computer screen.
Good stuff to think about. Applies to counseling, but also to day to day life.
Listening to this beautiful and simple lounge mix this morning. It's a lovely way to ease into the day.

I like this photo because it can be interpreted in many ways. Choose life. Choose to have ownership of your feelings. Choose to be healthy. Choose to change your outlook. Life is more about how you perceive it and subjectively experience it rather than objective truths. Choose to be free.
There is always movement in balance. Allow yourself to sway with the breeze and enjoy the ride.

enjoying the process
With whatever you are working towards, make sure to enjoy the process. Thinking about the end product can be overwhelming and we begin to question whether we are on the right path. This is why it is important to enjoy the progress along the way. Celebrate small successes. Keep going simply for the joy of learning.
I'm in the process of getting my master's degree in counseling. I'm 2 years deep and have 1 year to go. The process has been exhausting at times. Sometimes I get overwhelmed at the prospect of actually being a counselor, only making such and such a year. I question sometimes whether I should have done something more technical so that I could make more money. However, I have come to realize that I was missing the point of it all. What happened to going to school simply for the love of learning and expanding my knowledge? This is what I mean when I say enjoy the process. Life is a process in itself. Development doesn't just stop once you get into your career, or when you get married, or reach some other milestone. It is a process and there are always endless possibilities for growth and expansion. Enjoy it, and remember to relax and have a good time.
Easily one of my favorite tunes ever, even if it is only a minute and a half long. Short, but effective! Always brings me back to center because of the connotation I have with it. The 1975 never fail to produce emotion inspiring music and all of their songs are amazing. This is the first one I fell in love with :)
just a thought
Even if you're not feeling confident, walk with your head up. Take in the world around you. Smile at strangers as they walk by. Take social risks. This will increase confidence and help you feel more connected to others and to your environment. Relax and breathe easy.
