Gender Equity In The Workforce
The purpose of the blog is to discuss gender equity and how gender stereotypes affect the workplace. This blog will also emphasize the importance of having equality in the workforce. “Gender equity in the workplace aims to achieve broadly equal outcomes for women and men, overcoming barriers such as occupations, including leadership roles regardless of gender” (Commonwealth Government of Australia, 2018). Gender equity is a workplace-related problem and an issue people need to talk about. higher-power roles such as manager, boss, the supervisor needs to include fairness and learn each team member's strengths and weaknesses while encouraging/providing support.
In today’s society, people are still facing inequality gaps between males and females in their workplace which has led to many stereotypes. For example, “Female-gendered traits such as empathy and emotional awareness shine in a negative light. Traits traditionally associated with male gender roles, such as dominance, assertiveness, and confidence are also considered leadership positions” (Catalyst, 2020). These stereotypes lead women and men to feel pressured to act a certain way in their workplace. At worst, gender assumptions can lead to biases, sexism, and discrimination. In Shelley Zalis Ted Talk she discusses how working together to advance equality in the workplace is important. Shelley says “Purpose meets passion, we are unstoppable” which leads to “Working together to do our best” (Zalis Shelley, 2018). By working together to advance gender equality this helps us to be the best version of ourselves and have confidence in pursuing our career. It’s time to acknowledge gender equity and show the workforce that we are all equal.
