is a strategy that retells the binary but in a more complex way.  this strategy works in a two-step process, at first by challenging the binary in a non-normative way.  in the show shes got to have  Nola darling is free to explore her sexuality and its often her that has the power in her relationships, she has mulitple partners and is empowered by it, she isn't focused on one single man for her happiness rather she is focused on her self and career. she’s having fun and enjoying life and for a while stops dating men and focus only on a female partner that becomes something she can't handle, this where phase two comes in this reinscription strategy. she comes to a resolution that she can't date one single woman nor date multiple men she must date only one man thus reinforcing the original binary that was at first challenged.

other best sellers are marketed to towards adults and explicitly prescribe how men and women should be. these narratives often show how masculinities and femininity conform to the binary and often show the rewards to be reaped from meeting the binary expectations. the article above is about dan Bilzerian and how he has been able to profit by meeting the binary expectation of what a man is. He reinforces the binary by displaying his performance all over social media and his gains from it that lead to a luxurious lifestyle. It's hard not to want the amount of freedom he has so we set similar binary expectation with ourselves to achieve the same rewards thus reinforcing the binary.

Preparation is a mechanism for retelling the story of the binary, primarily directed at children and young teens. pop culture stories do this by socializing kids in anticipation of adulthood with the binary (Gender Storie's pg. 106) these popular stories set up a template of how a child is supposed to behave in adulthood depending on their sex. a common trope is a damsel in distress helpless until the right man comes along to save them.  Many think these children stories are benign and ignore how crucial this could be to a child's development. these stories reinforce the idea of men having all the power, women being powerless and thier only way to happily ever after is by being with a man with power like a prince or today's world high statues.

Hormones and Science.

when we use scientific reason to make sense of our hormones it's important to acknowledge this it is still with a binary approach. its based upon opposites giving hormones very strict roles and how they act on the body very similar to sex and gender roles. our biological sex should dictate our gender roles and neither should our hormones. drag queens are a perfect example for some who understands identity as performance. they let nither thier sex or hormones control their identity and they have more agency over their bodies allowing them to truly express their identity.

Is being masculine just hormonal, or is it chromosomal too?

The curse of hormones. I do believe are hormone levels have to do a lot with how we develop biologically, I believe its a very loose correlation to say that men are more aggressive or dominant because of testosterone or that women are more emotional than men because of higher levels of estrogen. How we express our self to the world is a choice, a performance that we act out, although many times it is subconscious its still a performance. when trans people take hormone supplements it's often to help with there appearance but hardly every to change personality to be more feminine or masculine and that's because our identity goes beyond and are not limited to our hormones.

Gender binary

My sexuality has been highly influenced by this binary world. growing up there was constant pressure to lose my virginity at an earlier age to confirm my manliness as if the earlier you lost it the manlier I was.  Would receive condoms by the boxes before I could even fit one. sex wasn't about the bond you form it was about how quick you could get it and from how many people if you were a boy in my family. I doubt my sisters had a similar conversation about sex in during there adolescents.  with this mentality that I grew up with it was easy to objectify women. The goal was sex, to be a ladies man, then my family and friends will see me as the man. women where just a tool to revalidate my manliness.  but that wasn't enough, I had to dominate and assertive too so I found myself dating more and more submissive women, leading to unhealthy relationships that followed the domination model instead of a partnership one. I was bored because I dated women that didn't challenge me, I had to be in complete control to be the man. Thankfully I've come to realize that we live in a binary world and that we shouldn't let this current system control our identity or sexuality. I can't wait to have my kids one day to raise them with complete freedom to chose how they wish to express themselves.

Gender Binary

“At the age of 15, I proudly told my father I wasn’t a virgin. He praised me and gave me a crisp 100-dollar bill and it felt good that the pressure was finally off, it happened sooner than later but the pressure was off…”

This is an exert from a paper I wrote for biology class, titled Being a Man. In the paper, I try and point out cultural norms that different from standard American culture. Although I was focused specifically on machismo culture from it still heavily relies on the binary. there is a different set of rules for boys and girls. As a young kid, I always felt a lot of pressure from my uncles and father to be this “ ideal man” the fallows the master narrative of the binary. I had to be aggressive, athletic, competitive, dominant, independent, logical, self-confident and unemotional (gender stories pg 59.) I had no idea about the binary at this age, I just assumed all of this pressure were natural acting forces that solidified my manhood. Never questioned it, like a fish in water, I just kept swimming a tried to hit every check mark I thought I was supposed to be hitting in order to be the ‘ideal man”.

Further understanding of reality,  

This makes me wonder if gender even exist? And if it does, we can’t really pinpoint what it is since gender identity is how we communicate to the world, and if communication is constantly being repaired and transformed, when will we know what sexuality really is? I believe both gender identity and gender must first become a ritual in order to give it any kind of meaning.  for example, shaking hands is a form of communication, now imagine a time where that wasn’t a ritual, it would have no meaning. It’s not until after it is practiced and repeated that makes it normalized. Once this is done, we give it a name “shaking hands” with this comes meaning and what is meant by shaking hands, but again this depends on culture as well. Shaking hands could mean something completely different across the globe or in a different time. To others and me in my culture shanking, hands have many meanings and can be interpreted differently depending on your surroundings. It could be used as a greeting, as a goodbye, it could represent a deal or bond or maybe a type of confirmation. Now if you apply this concept to all forms of communication, then gender identity could also have many forms of meaning. One could identify as masculine straight male, but let’s keep in mind that this really is produced by a symbolic process in which we create.

“Our goal of this chapter this chapter is to introduce you to the idea that gender is not fixed nor stable but it is created, all our realities are through communication” (gender stories ch2) I understand the Idea of gender is a social construct but so is  race and if gender isn't stable or fixed then why is race? gender identity is fluid what about racial identity? a black man can't wake up tomorrow and identify as a white man, I mean he can but no one would go along with it.  I mean I hope everyone would treat him based his personality, but it would be impossible to convince people he white and not black. To really apply this thesis on how reality is constructed to our identity we have to reject our own identity and all identities. To say gender don't exist but then to identify as different gender would make no sense to me. Gender should be fluid in a way so that gender doesn't exist, just like racial identity shouldn't exist either.  we would almost have to relearn language and communication to create new realities.

I really like this model of being two spirted because it works outside of the binary. to me it seems a lot more fluid with less rigid boxes that restrain one’s identity, because even when you do choose to identify with a gender that doesn’t match your sex you are still constricted to choose a gender in relation to the binary spectrum, where at opposite ends, we have masculinity and femininity. native Americans acknowledge the we have a spirt and body and sometimes that spirt goes beyond ones on body. how is one supposed to fully express how they feel on inside if there limited to their body or genitals or even a binary system. two spirit people have no expectations of how their sexuality is supposed to play out. many people think of two spirit people have two genders, meaning their gay bi or trans but two spirt acknowledges the inner spirt and out and when they don’t not match it creates a unique third gender that has no construct.

In chapter one of gender stories, there is a lot of discussion about the conceptualization of gender. We now have a better understanding of gender then we ever have before, but why is it harder to understand now more than ever? that’s because gender is more complicated than we thought.  It’s been easier to think of gender being equivalent to sex, meaning our gender is grounded in biology and even more important the physiological characteristics a person possesses, but this view makes no real distinction between sex and gender and often draws from models of the animal kingdom to explain human sexuality (Gender Stories 2013). The artifact above I believe is clear example of how one’s gender is strictly tied to their biological sex and how one is expected to behave because of it.
