Why was Marquis de Lafayette’s name so damn long?!

This time, I’m not the one asking the question — rather the one answering it:

No, it wasn’t because he collected every nickname given to him during his adventures.

I’ve seen this one passed around a lot and I can’t seem to locate a source for it? Whoever started this rumour, you did a good job.

Marie-Joseph Paul Roch Yves Gilbert du Mopier Marquis de Lafayette's name was that long because it was a... blessing. Of some sorts.

His name consists of saints & soldiers who had passed as a sort of "shield of protection" for before he was even born. This was common for French aristocrats to do at the time!

(though usually, in replacement of soldiers, it was family members, but Lafayette’s family’s men had a history of military careers, so…)

The shield seemed to have worked, considering he survived a crap ton of historical events (a lotta violence and chaos) during his lifetime.

He went by Gilbert, and his family surname was du Motier — Marquis de Lafayette was a noble title he inherited from his papa.

The origins of the French flag 🇫🇷

The French flag has its origin in the French Revolution. The people of Paris wanted a flag that represented them instead of the monarchy's white banner.

The first design was proposed by Camille Desmoulins who chose green as the main colour of the flag since it represented hope. However, as green was associated with the King's brother, red and blue were picked instead as both were colours linked with Paris.

Later, a white stripe was added to the flag by the Marquis de La Fayette as a way of represent the monarchy.

These colors also hold deep symbolic meaning: blue represents freedom, white represents equality, and red represents fraternity.

Lafayette Takes Command of the National Guard of Paris

On July 15, 1789, just one day after the storming of the Bastille, the French Revolution entered a new phase when Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, was chosen by acclamation as Colonel General of the newly created National Guard of Paris. The appointment reflected the public’s desire for a leader who could defend the revolutionary gains while maintaining order in a city filled with uncertainty and unrest.

A hero of the American Revolution, Lafayette was admired by many French citizens as a symbol of liberty and reform. His reputation as a supporter of constitutional government made him a popular choice to command the citizen militia that had formed to protect Paris and support the revolutionary movement. Under his leadership, the National Guard adopted the famous blue, white, and red cockade, which became a powerful symbol of the Revolution and later the French nation.

Lafayette attempted to balance revolutionary ideals with stability, hoping to guide France toward a constitutional monarchy rather than complete upheaval. However, his moderate approach would later place him between competing factions as the Revolution became increasingly radical. His appointment on July 15, 1789, marked one of the most important early moments of the French Revolution and established him as one of its most recognizable figures.

The rumors relative to Lafayette connecting him with the red flag are denied by his friends in the most emphatic manner. It seems that he neither wreathed the red flag nor the red cap—le bonnet rouge. The poor General sits retired in his house, and weeps over the mournful end of the fête in which he again played a part, as he has done at most popular risings ever since the beginning of the Revolution, always strangely drawn into the popular movement, and with the best intention to keep the people by his presence from too great excesses. He is like the tutor* who accompanied his pupil to the bawdy-houses to see that he at least did not get drunk there; to the taverns, to keep him from gambling; to the gambling houses, to guard him from dueling; but when a duel was unavoidable—why then the good old gentleman served as his second. *"Er gleicht dem Hofmeister." Heine is responding to reports of a mysterious figure who is alleged to have raised a red banner embroidered with "Liberty or Death" at Lamarque's funeral on June 5, 1832. Given Lafayette's international outlook, it seems only fitting that after dodging so many assassination attempts, he should utterly be pinned by a German.

Marie knocked on Gilbert's office door. She held a basket of butter cookies and fresh lemonade.

"May I come in...?"

She asked. Preparations for Republic Day were underway in Paris. And she... she was helping...

Gilbert had his back turned and was sitting down briefly at the desk. He looked up once Marie entered the room.

"Marie.. " he said, getting up ,helping her with the cookies and lemonade.

As Gilbert placed the basket on the table, Marie carefully poured lemonade into his glass.

"Your favorite. Fresh. With mint and lemon. I have to keep General Lafatette hydrated... Because he sometimes forgets to do so himself."

Marie smiled slightly. She was tired herself with the preparations for this special day, but she always found time for her friend.

"The parade will be starting soon..."

She sighed softly.

"By the way... Have you heard from Adrienne? I must admit, I miss her very much... Like the girls and Georges."

He finished the drink in seconds.
