The EX-ASSASSIN , yet to work with anyone else , had memorised everything she could about the others . So this morning , as the weretiger explained that he’d be on another job , so she’d instead be working by Kenjis side , Kyouka had simply nodded.
ㅤㅤㅤShe didn’t mind the boy — she didn’t mind anyone she worked with , really . He was the same age , with an ability just as strong . Though , that’s where their similarities ENDED.
ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤ Waiting outside of the agency , Kyouka stood by the door , ready for whenever the blonde would come to complete their job . It was simple enough. They were to deliver a wooden box to a man living on the city's outskirts . The pair would have to take the train to get there , but as long as there were no COMPLICATIONS , they should be back by the evening.
ㅤㅤㅤ Looking over as the blonde spoke , she glanced at the box in his hands before looking back up. ❝ Yes ❞ She nodded , bowing slightly at the taller boy.
The cheerful expression blends into a confused one for a few seconds, though Kenji is quick to rebound and in the blink of an eye, the grin is right back on his lips as he returns the gesture — a little clumsily due to the box in his arms, but he bows back to Kyouka all the same. She was a lot more prim and proper than him, there was no doubt about it.
“Off we go then!” And so he does, the first few steps being tentative, with Kenji casting a glance over his shoulder to ensure his partner for the day was following.
Aside from the chatter coming from people on the street and the roaring of the engines of cars passing by, the two of them walked in silence. It wasn’t awkward, or at least Kenji didn’t perceive it as such; still, he allowed curiosity to get the best of him. Missions serve as good bonding experiences, where people learn to work together in order to accomplish their given task — or so Kunikida said often enough, anyway. There’s no harm in turning theory into practice.
“Do you want to tell me a bit about yourself? Anything, really!” Cue a small pause. Kenji’s attention briefly shifts away from the road ahead and moves to Kyouka, offering a kind smile. “Everyone at the Agency is so different from the people I knew back at home, I’m always thrilled to learn new things.”
It’s easy for Atsushi’s mind to wander during the moments of silence that follow, few as they were. Living most of his life with doubt casting a shadow over his form, where every tomorrow was filled with incertitude, it was all a given; assuming the worst before allowing the rays of sun to break through his cloudy skies, breathing life to new ideas and possibility. The positive outlook he exhibits in the presence of others isn’t something that he can usually reflect towards his own person.
Lucy’s confusion is mirrored onto his features, eyebrows flying up as his head tilts to the side, lips parting to signal that a question sat at the tip of his tongue. Yet clarification is quickly provided — and how.
Confusion is replaced by a different emotion entirely, something that he can’t quite place a finger on. Was it wonder? Gratitude? Whichever the case, his duo-chrome eyes sparkle with delight over the praise received. It was somewhat reassuring, though it didn’t quite explain Lucy’s strange behavior as of recent.
…Not that he could fully judge, not when the two of them were enemies not long ago. Maybe Atsushi got ahead of himself once again, making assumptions without properly sitting to think things through. There was no need to use ‘maybe’ — the answer stood right in front of him, yet he remained blissfully oblivious to the way color flooded Lucy’s cheeks, turning her pale complexion into a red that could rival that of her hair.
“Really? Do you mean tha— Oh.” His attention calls to the sack of beans that dropped to the ground, lifting himself up on his tippy-toes to peek over the counter. It was a space reserved for personnel only, so any trigger-happy reaction was snuffed out right away. Though as Atsushi’s eyes flicker back to Lucy, he finds himself grinning. “You don’t mind breaking the rules just this time, right? I can help pick the sack up and clean any leftover beans,” A pause. “If that’s fine with you. If not, I can… Uh…”
Think Atsushi, think. Bingo!
“Order something else?”
…Or not.

"And then you just pull back the lever like this after removing the safety.. It's not hard." Why was she teaching her about guns again? Awkward as Uni seemed, shes actually enjoying herself having someone to talk about guns with for once.
“Aaaa~ha!” Comes Senti’s response as she follows along with the instructions provided, eyebrows flying up in amazement. Truthfully speaking, she was the last person that should be provided with a gun, let alone be taught how to use one — not that it stopped the Herrscher from wanting to sate her curiosity over everything new.
“I see, I see. It’s quite simple actually.” Because everything was for someone as amazing as her. Self-proclaimed, some would say. Simpletons, all of them! Except…
“Why guns, though?” A slight tilt of the head accompanies the question, a hand placing itself on her hip. “You showed me how to use one, but never told me why you liked them. So…”

The young girl ensured she wouldn’t be in the way of him before sitting in the corner & opening her notebook . Looking over each & every page , like she did most evenings , the girl tried to MEMORISE what she’d written to herself . Then , flipping to a page , she last remembered to be blank , she paused.
ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤToday the zombie had been tasked with delivering medicine to people too SICK or old to retrieve it themselves . Unfortunately , she couldn’t remember much of what had happened , so she couldn’t recall when or WHY she’d written the sentence in her notes. ❝ Does Dr Baizhu want Qiqi to CHANGE ? ❞ She asked , eyes still glued to her notes until the older man answered . Looking up , she wasn’t sure why he’d want her to change either , but it was written down in her notes.
ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤㅤㅤHugging the book close , the purple-haired girl shrugged. ❝ Is it hard for Baizhu to look after Qiqi ? ❞
Baizhu’s concentration breaks as the first question is voiced aloud, eyes widening slightly as surprise momentarily paints his features. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the topic is revisited — the moment they’d breached such, the moment ink touched the yellowed page of Qiqi’s notebook, he knew it was bound to be revisited.
He’d taken to ripping out pages of her notebook before and this should’ve been no exception. And yet…
“Now, why would I wish for you to change?” There is distinct gentleness that carries into the doctor’s words as he shifts to face the zombie, abandoning the task at hand in favor of this exchange in favor of playing out a scene that had already happened. The way his lips curl upward into a smile is rehearsed; insincere, much as his words often were. “Minor inconveniences don’t warrant change, Qiqi. Taking care of you is the bare minimum I can do — after all, you are my dearest aide and protégé.”
From around his neck, Changsheng coils just a little tighter — where her silence had been earned, she still made a point to let Baizhu know that she was aware of his doings. And so he lets out a strained chuckle, clearing his throat before speaking up again, “Do you wish to change?”
Those same voices still carried on despite her clear lack of acknowledgment. Though oddly, having hunched down and grasped her own head, followed by the sensation of something on her back, the splitting pain in her head had slowly, ever so slowly started to ebb away. What was left behind however, was just a mere empty feeling. Even the shaky hand touching her shoulder gave no reaction, at least not at first.
"..Ah.." Finally, there came a second of attention. Blank gaze finally stared up up the one who spoke. "Stand.. Yes.." She assumed anyway. What little attempt she ended up making mind you, was full of stumbles and ended up with her back on the ground rather than her feet.
She was just like a baby animal, as if she didn't know nor remember how to walk for the moment. Had she actually come to her senses there was no doubt she'd have something to somewhat say about that.
The only thing more painful than the initial lack of a response is the acknowledgement of a simple fact: despite the passage of time, Yuki was still helpless. There was very little he could do, but at the very least he was now able to properly reach out to Fubuki — regardless of how much his hands shook as he reached for her, he would become her pillar of support, strong arms whisking her up.
There was a string of quiet apologies murmured as he held the girl to his chest, his nose burying into her hair briefly; taking in this moment, for it felt like a small victory to finally be able to hold her. Not that it would ever undo the damage done, the voice at the back of his mind cares to remind him.
“Let’s… take you home.” Somewhere quiet, away from the ever-judgmental eyes of strangers. Somewhere safe. “You’ll be alright. I promise— Just… Hang in there a little while longer, okay?”
Until they reach Shigure’s house and this tangled mess could be figured out. At the very least, Yuki would have someone to confront about the situation, for he’s never once recalled a time that the memory erasure procedure wasn’t fully effective. It left him to wonder if maybe, just maybe, this had something to do with the curse being lifted. An unlikely possibility, but a theory worth considering.
...He makes a point to dry his tear-stained cheeks before they arrive.
(...)
“And that’s the short of it.” He says to Shigure, back turned to the man as Yuki moved to retrieve a spare blanket and pillow from one of the storage closets. “...Shigure, if there was ever a time I wanted you to be serious, it’s now,” The words are a warning, though Yuki finds himself devoid of the usual anger that seemed to grip him while in the other’s presence. “Nayu-san, she… recognized both Honda-san and I.” A pause, where he takes a moment to check up on the girl, who occupied their living-area space.
“Have you heard of anything like this happening before?”

This was a story as old as time; an inevitable ending to each fairytale, where the villain is defeated.
Predictable. Dull. Boring.
Yet it remained something necessary all the same, allowing the main character of the story to earn their much-needed character development. After all, the princess cannot be saved without the dragon being slain first — yet the dragon itself cannot be downed until Prince Charming comes in possession of a shiny magical sword, or passes a variety of tests to prove himself worthy of embarking on such a perilous journey.
In truth, this wasn’t the end; it was only the beginning. And for the others to be able to play their part on this stage called life, Dazai obediently followed along to a script that was written for them all. Uncharacteristic for him, maybe — this too, was part of a greater plan. A gamble. A risk worth taking, for the supposed better good. But whose exactly—?
Such are the thoughts of those pulling the strings in the dark. Others can only follow suit, acting accordingly to whatever scenario they are met with. Until such a time would come, he had time to spare; not quite an abundance, but the car-ride was more than sufficient for him to unearth the past, poke and prod at the individual seated across from him. Oh, if only looks could kill…
“You know, Kami-san,” If anyone has the gall to address another so casually, then it’s none other than Dazai Osamu himself. The nickname is meant to ridicule the other more than anything else; a subtle nod towards God, only because Osamu enjoys to leave the impression that he’s at the mercy of others. “For someone who shares a past with me, you are being awfully cold,” His expression is overly bright for someone that is handcuffed, whom had the blade of a sword pointed at his neck not long ago; all of it, considered nothing more than child’s play by the person who has seen and endured the unthinkable. The handcuffs could not stop him and the car itself would be easy to escape from.
The fact that he didn’t was by choice alone; his very own.
Dazai could feign a different emotion, if so desired — curiosity, maybe? Whatever the choice, it remains impossible to fully snuff out that annoying, playful lilt that his words carry, or the slight upward tug of his lips. “I’m wounded, truly. This pick-up could have been a romantic experience, yet you deprive me of such. Hath thy heart turned to stone, Romeo?”
@sleeplesswork !
Early mornings at the office were usually spent in ways that were reminiscent of his life at the village, with Kenji humming a merry tune as he went around the reception area, watering the plants. It was a small feat, but one that never failed to bring him joy; though it remained to be questioned what exactly could sour the mood of someone with such a sunny disposition.
Still, his watering rounds are briefly interrupted by Tanizaki — subsequently, news are conveyed to him; a change of plans, where he would have to be the one accompanying Kyoka for a delivery mission instead of Atsushi. Though he blinks owlishly at first, it doesn’t take long for his expression to shift, the budding excitement felt making him grin widely.
“You can count on me, Tanizaki-san!”
A notion that held true among the members of the Armed Detective Agency, for they all knew that no matter how nonconventional Kenji’s methods were, he was a reliable individual.
And surely enough, when the time came for his and Kyoka’s departure, Kenji made his way over to where she stood by the entryway. Despite his small frame, he had no trouble in carrying the wooden box that they were meant to deliver.
“Looks like it’s just the two of us today, Kyoka-chan! Ready to go?”

Underneath the calm expression that he wore, Fyodor was brimming with excitement. A feeling he had not experienced in a very long time, bringing him to an almost heightened sense of ecstasy as he thought over recent events and how they had slotted together like the pieces of a puzzle without error; everything was a matter of time, it always has been. Yet seeing the slow unravel of his plans as they came to fruition reinforced his vanity.
Reclined into his chair, with his cheek resting into the palm of his hand, the man’s eyes gazed at the chessboard that lay in front of him, its pieces scattered across the checkered surface. A hand reaches out, slender fingers gently tracing over the shape of the white queen — a delicate gesture, where violet eyes begin to glint wickedly; one could only presume it was in anticipation of something. A sinister sight, in the study’s dim lighting.
Still, although the queen was within sight, it was neither in nor out of his grasp — theirs. Once more, time was of the essence; a luxury that Fyodor and his collaborators had in abundance, yet something that their foes were rapidly running out of. For them, this ending — this apocalypse — was imminent. All sinners would inevitably pay the rightful price for having run astray from the righteous path given to them, sooner rather than later. And the Russian delighted in nothing more than the idea of carrying out such a duty.
He considers himself a forgiving man. Such is the nature of God, after all.
And it falls within the very same responsibilities of such a being to listen to others; to the poor unfortunate souls that threw themselves at his feet, placing their lives into his capable hands in hopes of obtaining salvation and being freed from the shackles of sin that mortality branded upon them.
“Do you understand now, Kolya?” The name sounds sweet as it falls from his lips, yet it’s all rehearsed; devoid of sincerity. And though he addresses another, picking up the pieces of a leftover conversation from before, Fyodor’s attention doesn’t shift away from the chessboard. Instead, the man shifts into his chair as he brings both hands to his front, propping his elbows against the mahogany surface of his desk to allow for his fingers to intertwine. “The importance that he holds— how detrimental he is to this plan.”
One-of-a-kind. Indispensable. Irreplaceable.
This admittance could be considered a slip of the tongue, given how rare it was for Fyodor to sing praise to another, let alone properly acknowledge an individual for their strong suit; in a sea of faces, the dull-gray color of the majority snuffed out even the brightest of colors, far and far in between as they were. Yet Sigma was unique, this much was true. A shining star that painted the dark nightsky, bathing it into its warmth.
Factual.
“I trust that you will learn to behave yourself in his presence.”

"When they said there'd be a rock in our path I assumed they meant a boulder. It's a pebble." It is, in fact, a giant boulder. Suimei being Suimei however, makes short work of blasting it to bits with a muttered incantation and point of his finger.
“W-W-Wait, wait, wait!” Words of plea that come a little too late, much like Pardofelis’ attempt to hide behind Suimei. Not that it did too much, given the pebbles that flew here, there and everywhere in the aftermath of the explosion.
Hands perched atop the other’s shoulder, she meekly ducked her head, ears pulling back slightly. “Gimme a heads up next time, will you Boss? T-That sort of thing isn’t for the faint-hearted!” And yet, she was supposed to be his guide; a person that knows the place like the back of her hand. Oopsie!
"My tail's all puffed up now..."
Undoubtedly, the bigger of concerns here.

Although Oda’s reactions could be considered passive at best, it was the lack of a reaction that presently told a story of its own; that of familiarity. After all, this was a dance that the two of them had done plenty of times before — enough to learn the differences between Murakami’s words; when they carried a bite of them, or when they were spoken in faux retaliation.
Among the two, it was clear which one held true for their current exchange. It’s only natural that he follows up with a fitting response, by reaching out to ruffle their hair once more.
“He’s not the one who agreed to accompany me out today.” A simple answer, where Odasaku levels his gaze with theirs for a moment, blue eyes meeting the almost matching pair. The words that follow lack any form of humorous tilt, though they’re intended as a joke. “Perhaps I’m remembering wrong.”
Eiji's always been a weak spot and there are times Ash regrets ever agreeing to the interview, letting Eiji so close him in a record amount of time. He likes to think it's physical, has to be, why else would he gravitate towards the other like an anvil dropped onto a pavement from the roof of a skyscraper? Falling aimlessly, dangerously, shattering the ground upon impact as well as his own core, killing anything unlucky enough to be in their vicinity. All this because, what, he liked his pretty face? His innocence? Did he just envy Eiji's sheltered life, did he want to try and take some of that purity for himself, just to have a taste, see what it felt like in his own mouth?
There were times Eiji could have gone out, leave Ash to turn to dust on his own terms, but he kept coming back. Did Eiji, in turn, want a taste of Ash's corruption? Did he want to see what it was like to live the life of a wanted rat? Or did he, too, just like Ash's pretty face? Perhaps neither of them were as virtuous as the other thought. The other's always been full of surprises, some worse than others, both endearing and incredibly stupid. He wondered which adjective he would use later on to describe Eiji's pleads to stay this time.
He wondered if few months from now, he'd curse himself for what he'd allowed Eiji to do. Perhaps the very gun in his lap would find its way into his mouth, leaving behind a bitter taste of gunpowder, although only for a moment.
The chair rattles against the floor but Ash doesn't even flinch, finding it considerably painful to look at the source of the noise, especially because there's happiness plaguing its features. He's just willingly placed a target on the other's back, only for Eiji to mistake it for a favor. Ash should know better. He should do better.
This selfishness is going to ask for a great cost one day. He's not sure if he'll ever be rich enough to pay for it with anything else but his own life. Wouldn't it be funny if he's just placed a target on his own back too? Is the universe laughing in a way he can't hear again?
The repetitive echoes of gratefulness feel like nails being driven into his coffin while he can do nothing but watch because he personally decided to give Eiji the hammer. Who was he to take it away after it made him this happy? What kind of monster would rip that out of his hands? A self-preserving one, probably.
"Sure," he says as he grabs the gun from his lap and places it back into the security of his bag. It wouldn't rest for long, he's sure, so he handles it with care. "You'll learn how to defend yourself. Combat. Weapons. When I tell you to run, you'll run like your life depends on it. I mean it, Eiji," Ash warns, glancing at him to meet his eyes. "If there's a gun to my head and I tell you to leave, you'll leave. Can I trust you with that?"
This was suicide and he knew it. Returning to New York, agreeing to stay — rather, making Ash take him back, becoming part of his life again and the gang’s. It’s a choice that came with a hefty price, something that could cost Eiji his life. Even if Golzine was out of the picture, it didn’t mean that others didn’t rise to take his place. There were a great number of people who wanted to sink their teeth into Ash, both metaphorically and otherwise, and he could be nothing more than a bargaining chip for them to obtain what they want.
A chilling thought, undoubtedly; something that makes Eiji shiver, the nervousness from before manifesting itself for a different reason entirely. He was afraid, of course he was. But this was lesson number one, a self-imposed personal lesson on fear and comfort being nonexistent in critical moments. A means of learning to control his own emotions, to react better when he’s in a life or death situation.
It’s all hypothetical, though. Taking deep breaths while in Ash’s presence, trying to keep his tumultuous emotions at bay — what good would that do? Eiji is safe now, there’s no gun pointed at his head or anyone else’s. With a dejected sigh, the raven-haired man slumps back into the chair and presses his lips into a thin line, trying hard to reason with himself. Meaning, he was trying not to sulk.
“I will,” The words come out with ease, though the tone of Eiji’s voice made him sound like a child that got scolded. None of it was Ash’s fault, no — there was an internal battle going on, demons that Eiji himself had to conquer before he could say he truly is ready to embrace such a life in its fullest. His eyes lift to meet the jade green pair at the warning that comes, pale lips parting slightly despite there being no words to speak; nothing he could conjure up in the moment. Once more, Eiji reminds himself that this is a suicide mission that he willingly embarked on and with that, he gives a slow nod. Giving his word out loud was a whole other matter, it seems.
“It’s… hard. It’s difficult for me to just agree with what you’re saying, because they’re scenes I don’t want to see again.” A pause, “I know, I know— That’s not the reality we live in. If I don’t want to see something like that, I should pack up my bags and go back home. I’m not doing that—” He points towards Ash accusingly as he speaks. Childish. “So don’t even think to say it again! I’ll do it, I’ll learn to do it all and promise to listen to you, no matter the circumstances we’re in. It’s just… not fair, Ash.” Frustration resurfaces quickly as Eiji’s hand drops to his lap, words echoing through his mind as he’s forced to embrace a simple fact: life was hardly ever fair.
And so, back he goes to square one. Any attempt at not sulking? Gone. In fact, Eiji was pouting by now. “Whatever, this won’t get me anywhere. Do you… know when they’re going to let you out of here?”
awesomeuchuu:
“Whoa, a real pinky promise!!” Hinata grinned and excitedly jumped to his feet, stretching out his own hand, fist closed except for, of course, the pinky. Their fingers locked together and Hinata gently shook their hands up and down a couple of times, chanting the little spell under his breath. There, the promise was forever. He gave Tori’s shoulder a light pat and sat back down, brushing his hair behind his ears as he folded his hands in his lap, listening to the pinkhaired boy.
“Your parents aren’t…?” Weren’t the Himemiyas filthy rich? Hinata had - and it was probably stupid of him, he supposed - assumed that that meant that they were overly happy as well, as they had access to anything and everything money could buy. Not having to starve or wear the same clothes day after day… Those sort of things. Wasn’t that happiness?
Well, clearly not.
“Oh, let me tell you. I always feel I’m not good enough!” He smiled awkwardly, humorlessly. “Yuuta-kun’s always nagging at me and tells me to get lost or something and he thinks I’m incapable of taking care of myself sometimes, I think. Like I’m not trying my hardest to take care of him. …And me.”
“Why would you think you’re not good enough? Have your sister said something to you?”
There’s no real surprise to Hinata thinking that Tori had the perfect family life. From the outside, it probably looked that way to many others, too; at least, it was a common enough occurrence for some to believe that money solved all troubles. It wasn’t entirely wrong, but it wasn’t true either — Eichi was the living proof of it, where money couldn’t cure his condition. It was only a means of delaying the inevitable.
In Tori’s case, he realized quite late that there had been things he’d been stripped of by his family, if not outright denied. If it wasn’t for Yuzuru, perhaps he’d have been in a worse place.
“It’s hard, isn’t it? When your efforts aren’t acknowledged, even though you’re trying your best.” Those words strike home with Tori more than he’s able to say. “Mm, I know the feeling all too well. But it’s kinda surprising to hear you say that, since you two seem so… in sync with one another!” Except that didn’t mean things ran as smoothly between the two, no matter how well they performed together.
“...Sorry. Maybe I shouldn’t talk about things I know nothing about.” Yuzuru always tells him that, so perhaps it’s time Tori listens. The silence makes him think and, in turns, thinking makes him frown. “It’s not really something she said, it’s just— Adults making plans for us. For her! Eichi-sama has been mine for all these years and now I stand to lose him to my own sister. How is that fair, Hinata? I’m supposed to love her, I’m supposed to be a good, caring brother and yet…!”
And yet, Tori has never felt further from being such, hands balling into fists as his body was overcome by tremors. “It’s not fair, Hinata. It’s not fair!”
It would be funny to watch just how their niches switch if Ash could be a mere bystander instead of the victim of Eiji's smug look. Shit, it really has been a while since he's been this caught off guard and, boy, he hates it. He's seen and done too much in this flirting department to be acting like a baby deer caught in the headlights, yet Eiji possesses some sort of spell that makes him weak in the knees and too full in his throat.
Eiji's teasing and Ash finally grasps enough sense of himself to close his gaping mouth and scowl as he begs for the gods to make his blush disappear this very instant. Fucking embarrassing. Damn it.
Thing is, Eiji hasn't said too much. He's said too little, if anything, Ash is used to things that are much more crude and descriptive. This was so harmless and yet here he sits, disarmed and exposed. Eiji might as well have stripped him naked, emotionally.
"Shut up," he finally snaps out of embarrassment and huffs. It takes a second, but he's tempted - no, inspired - by the appearance of Eiji's devilish horns to reveal his own. Two could play this game. Tit for tat. Let's see just how cocky he can remain swimming in Ash's waters. "Did you ever play a game of chicken, Eiji?" he asks, shifting closer as he places a gentle hand just a little above the other's knee.
The moment Ash tells him to shut up, Eiji’s posture straightens up a little as surprise paints his features. He blinks owlishly, tilting his head to the side in a clear display of confusion; a feeling that only seemed to deepen at the question that follows, along with the slight change in demeanor that it brought.
His devil’s horns and tail are really just for show, for Eiji’s innocence and obliviousness are easily able to override all else. Was it a genuine question, or a challenge? Because if the former held true, he had somewhat of an idea on what the game could be. If it was the latter, then he wouldn’t back down. Challenges could be fun. The thing was that he didn’t know the extent of that very word, or just how multifaceted it was.
“I haven’t, no…” Unintentionally, the words come out in the form of a murmur, eyes briefly darting to the hand that rested just above his knee. Eiji’s brows furrow as he mulls over the idea of this supposed game, a thoughtful look befalling his features. “You wanna play?”
Famous last words for a certain Eiji Okumura, who was about to dig his own grave.

Levi’s resolve to keep a clear head has become something that has saved lives of others, not just his own. In times like these, however, it kept his mind a bit too clear and Erwin wishes he could find a way to disarm that sense of self-preservation. It’s not to say that Erwin wasn’t a predator Levi shouldn’t shield himself from, but the games he wanted to play were more difficult to win if his Captain never relented in that sense.
Erwin’s to blame for it, he thinks. Him and everyone who tried to get to him in the underground. Growing up in such conditions meant Levi couldn’t afford to let his guard down, not to mention the memory of how he’d addressed Levi on his first mission outside of the walls. It was an advice more than an order but the other seemed to have taken it to heart, a bit too much by the sense of it.
His own guard, however, seemed to almost lay flat on the ground whenever their situation turned unprofessional. Always happy to welcome Levi in his personal space has turned him soft. In return, though, Erwin knew he wouldn’t have to speak to get his points across. He liked Levi. He trusted Levi. He wanted Levi. So letting the man ruffle his feathers and steal his breath away, pull carefully styled locks out of place was a mere testament to how he really felt. Hell, he knew if it was now that Levi asked him to bare his throat while wielding a knife as sharp as his tongue, he’d do so without hesitation.
Where Levi’s mind remains clear, his body sometimes falters. Erwin can see glimpses of the walls crumbling in the way he takes a breath just a bit too sharply, in the way his eyes seem to haze for just a moment. That’s why getting physical with Levi is so rewarding; it’s a slip of control, it’s just his body responding so naturally before his mind can catch on, it’s beautiful. Comforting.
Even now, he sees Levi’s shoulder twitch before he feels the hand on his jaw but he remains still, unflinching, savoring the way his body betrays him yet again. It’s up to him to figure out what exact emotion caused this before he acts on it, sifting through the possibilities before settling on annoyance, perhaps even anger.
There’s not many, if any, men who would be allowed to see him like this, who’d be allowed to show their displeasure with him physically. People snarked at him all the time, it was inevitable for someone in his shoes, a person in charge of a whole division of their military, but even personally. Mike nor Nile had once thought to lay a hand on him, this was the sort of intimacy he only allowed Levi to breach.
The hand drops and Erwin’s expression softens. “What else is new?” he asks instead, keeping his fingers curled around the strap of his gear. Levi’s not withdrawing so Erwin takes it as a sign that he can push a little further, tugs him just a tiny bit closer.
A discontent sigh escapes him at Levi’s terms. He was almost there, he can feel it deep in his bones. But yet again, it’s a push and pull situation that he can’t seem to find a way to win. Maybe, this time, he has to lose. Erwin leans closer to him, narrowing the gap between them. “Do I need to pull rank here?” he asks quietly with humor tainting his words, tired smirk settled on his lips. “I’m sorry,” he repeats, closing the gap as he places a gentle, apologetic, kiss to his lips before withdrawing completely and standing up, reaching up to fix his hair back in place. It matters to him, for Levi to have those keys to their home, but he won’t force the man any more. Maybe he’s afraid of that sort of commitment, or the meaning behind it. Maybe Erwin’s thought too ahead, got too excited.
“The offer stands if you change your mind,”
Despite the humor that laces Erwin’s words, Levi finds himself furthest from being amused, his characteristic scowl only seeming to deepen under the notion of being dealt such a card. As if, is what he thinks, but doesn’t voice out — perhaps if it had been another person, he’d treat those words seriously; as a threat, not a makeshift joke. His mind immediately corrects that initial thought, since it’s less a matter of who was speaking, but where those words were being spoken.
Circumstances matter, this much he is aware of. Painfully so. And at present, they are far from being ideal.
To an extent, Levi realizes that Erwin’s pushing things this far not out of some twisted pleasure derived from winning mindgames, but simply because there’s more to the offer than meets the eye. There is meaning to be found in the notion of sharing a house together; most of all, coming from the man who abandoned the idea of romance long ago, casting it away while actively choosing to pursue his ideals; chasing after a dream that stood no chance to be fulfilled, yet pouring every resources to ensure that one day, it would come to fruition.
This could represent a new beginning for both of them, a page turned. A blank canvas upon which they could paint on together, the first few steps taken forward towards forming a family of their own. Even if it was just the two of them, it was enough; it always had been.
Despite being something that Levi himself sought to have, the notion of ‘family’ remained a bitter spot. Not because of his mother, nor because of whatever relationship he forged with Kenny, but because of Isabel and Farlan. His found-family, the two people he sought to protect, only to lead them to an untimely demise. Even those memories are touched by Erwin — both directly and otherwise. The passage of time has tempered his feelings on the matter, anger subsiding and allowing resentment to take its place. Even that was then replaced by an entirely different feeling and then another, until all that remained were empty memories. Melancholia.
A feeling that stays as Erwin parts away from him, concealed by leftover embers of anger.
“You’re sorry,” Levi bitterly repeats, doubtful that the words held true in earnest. Any previous attempts that were made to understand where the other was coming from die out then and there, as he moves to stand up from the sofa. He lingers on the spot for a few moments more, silently contemplating whether he should throw Erwin a bone — a gracious enough move, he thinks. A middle finger raised to the Commander.
“There’s one thing you’re forgetting,” By the time he starts speaking, Levi’s back is turned to Erwin and distance is steadily placed between them. “Without you there, that ‘home’ is just another house.”
Pretty on the outside, meant to uphold appearances. Empty. And if that would be the case, they might as well stay as they were, because if Erwin was content to live a lie, then he’ll find that it was a sentiment that Levi didn’t share. And it was on that note that the door swung open, only to quietly fall shut moments later.
Perhaps in a week from now, things will be different. For the time being, Levi refuses to backtrack and reconsider the offer. If Erwin truly was sorry, if he understood a point of view different from his own — if he’d pull his head out of his ass for just a moment, then maybe, just maybe, he’d accept the keys. Until then, he wants to hear nothing of it.
It takes until the mere mention of Tohru having an accident for the girl to bolt up to her feet, expression of worry clearly written across her face. Good grief. Last time she'd shown up with fingers littered with band-aids, this time she couldn't show up at all. What on earth was this girl doing at her part time job?
At least she could breath a sigh of relief once it was stated the other girl was actually fine and alive. Still didn't stop her from ever so slightly furrowing her brows together at the matter of sending an essential stranger, to her anyways, to accompany her instead.
Though, being an acquaintance of Tohru, surly he couldn't be that bad.
Eventually she managed to nod a couple of times, shortly whipping a small notepad and pen from her pocket and starting to jot something down. She'd become a dab hand at speed writing over the years, what with it being one of her main methods of communication and all.
'I don't mind. We were just going to get some supplies for the new school term, then maybe some tea and cake after if transport times allowed.'
Notepad was carefully turned, held out toward the other so he could read what was written. A little awkward, yes, but it worked for her.
Though at school Yuki was highly praised for both his looks and charms, the mask he wore while walking the school hallways was nowhere to be seen at present. While he was perfectly able to maintain a calm exterior and a neutral expression, he felt undeniably awkward. And at the back of his mind, concerns still lingered at the idea of this outing.
Was this really alright…? No, he made a promise and doubting or questioning his choice was just as bad as going back on his words.
With that in mind, it becomes a little easier to slip the mask back on, a cordial smile lifting to his lips as gray eyes read over the beautiful cursive writing. It’s not something Yuki sits to question, no; Tohru had already presented him with the possibility of such occurrences, so they came with little surprise. If it worked for Fubuki, if it brought her even just a bit of comfort, then he’d seek to preserve that feeling.
“School supplies and… Ah, I see,” A light shake of the head is given as a small, airy chuckle is suppressed. “Do you truly not mind if I join you for tea and cake? Or is this an indirect way of asking a stranger for a date?” He’s unable to bite back the joke, although shame finds Yuki quickly after speaking those words aloud, making his hastily add on, “I’m only joking, please don’t take me seriously.”
Living with Shigure was both a blessing and a curse — Yuki was beginning to experience the latter of the two; had that perverted old man started rubbing off on him? Agh…
“Anyway… Shall we be on our way?”
