one day some of you will actually go outside and go to pride and youāre going to meet old black queens who refers to themselves as femme, youāll meet people from small towns who still use the word transsexual, youāll see that your local activist organization set up a stall about your local LGBT history that includes leather barās history, youāll see lesbians in groups refer to themselves as āguysā and āboysā, youāll see someone with breasts and pasties and little else have āhe / himā painted on his chest, and youāll be so caught up with your terminally online attitude that instead of appreciating the wide diversity of people who exist in the LGBT community who are brave enough to share themselves youāll just be formulating posts and tweets in your head for when get home about how āproblematicā it all was and itās honestly tragic
Once, back when I worked in an LGBTQIA dungeon, I encountered a significantly older person who remarked to me that they hadnāt been to āthis type of placeā in decades. They struck up a conversation with me and told me how amazing it was to see an openly transexual youth such as myself. I asked them about their experiences with gender and they said āoh, well, Iām a bit male and a bit female. Menās and womenās clothes, sometimes makeup in a suit, sometime fresh faced in a dress when Iām at home. You know, bisexualā Obv this puzzled me at first until I realized this person was using bisexual in a very, very, literal and old fashioned sense, as in, dual-sexed. Non-binary.
Yāall gotta understand there are generation gaps in the language we use and you open yourself up to a LOT of very interesting stories if you stop blocking off the past.
One of the biggest problems with modern community is the idea that (white) western, post 2000s LGBT vocabulary is the only correct way to speak about sexuality and gender.
Like the freak outs under pictures of protests from the 70s-90s because signs and shirts say faggot and dyke and queer, as if these words werenāt a key part of identity and activism.
Beyond just English, I saw a couple people making fun of the term āgender xā in an animeā¦but why would a Japanese production adhere to English standards?
Or the way people talk about pronouns as if every language uses pronouns the same way as English.
Itās justā¦it indicates a mindset that these words are objective and written in stone and western youth culture is always the most correct in a way thatā¦feels icky. Diversity in people includes diversity of language.

āThis is a new meaning of family. Itās not a question of a man and a woman and children, which we grow up knowing as a family. Itās a question of a group of human beings in a mutual bond.ā

there is something special to me about the wording used in tma 170, especially with how martin continually pulls himself out of the lonely. near the end, it isnātĀ āi am lovedā orĀ ājon loves meā, itāsĀ āi am in loveā that pulls him out that final time. it reads like love is an action that you get to take.
martin remarks that other people in the lonely are trying to remember someone who loves them, and again, the wording -Ā āsomeone who loves themā. those people are stuck and i doubt any of them are going to get out.
martin remembers his mom and saysĀ āi know she loves meā, and it doesnāt help him. he saysĀ āthere are people who trust me, people who love meā and remembers sasha (or not!sasha) and it still doesnāt help.
itās each time martin remembers jon, as someone he loves - even when he thinks jon doesnāt like him backĀ - that he starts to break free from the lonely.
maybe itās how the lonely gets equated with numbness, with not feeling anything. someone can love you all they want and it might not affect you! you could still feel absolutely nothing about them, you could be numb to their emotions. but itās not about their connection to you, itās about yourĀ connection to them. itās not jon seeing martin that gets him out of the lonely in 159, itās when martin sees jon. itās not jonās love for martin that helps this time, itās martinās love for jon. and yes, jon certainly helped both times, but all his help and all his love couldāve amounted to nothing if martin wasnāt in love with him. relationships are a two-way street after all. itās martinās emotions, martinās love, that helps him. itās not just āi will get out of this for the person i loveā, itās āi will get out of this for myself because i am in love and i will not give that upā.Ā
itās also important to me because martin has over and over again been shown to be a giver. he tries to help other people, he cares about them, he loves people. and itās the fact that martinās love for other people is just as important - even more important! - than being loved. itās his feelings about other people. itās that there is validity and strength in taking the action of loving people into your own hands, and that yeah, actually, having love for other people can save you.

thereās something magical about animal crossing for the gamecube. that feeling in your chest youād get when you boot up the game and hear ānintendoā and the sound of the train. looking up at the tv as you tell the cat your name, that atmosphere that takes over when you arrive in your town and come off the steps. the music that plays while tom nook hands you a shirt and tells you to plant flowers. the silence when you walk in your tiny house, the sound of your little feet on the floorboards, the light filtering in through the windows. the calmness of wandering around the forest and shaking trees, collecting furniture and fruit and bugs. fishing in the rivers. i get so nostalgic when i think about it. acgc was so good
