Are you as behind your wife's decision concerning Lucas as you let her believe or do you have your doubts? Why?

“I am behind her decision regarding Lucas. It’s the right thing to do. Do I have my doubts? Of course. If you ask me, a healthy amount of doubt isn’t out of place. Lucas has been living with us for the past year and a half. He’s a great kid. One of the greatest and I’m very glad Benji’s made a friend like him. I guess my biggest doubt is that I probably haven’t made the same deep connection to him as my wife has. A connection strong enough to say he’s one of mine.”

Are you proud of your children? Have they amounted to everything you’ve wished for them? What if they, hypothetically, were homewreckers, cheaters or desperate for popularity? What would you think? And would you want to know everything they get up to?

“I’m always proud of my children. Of every thing they do. They are my proudest achievement to date. They are still young and will make mistakes along the way, but they’ll never stop learning from them. They are their own people now, with their own personalities and dreams, but they know how to differentiate between right and wrong. Joyce and I have always made that one of our top priorities and we’ve done a good job with that. I trust them with their actions. At the end of the day, they’ll always be my children. Homewrecker, cheater, desperate for popularity or whatever else. And to answer your last question, no. I wouldn’t. There are some things a parent doesn’t have to know. I’m talking from experience. I was young too once. I know, hard to believe.”

“ What it will mean for our family? What does that mean, what do you think it will mean for our family? Our family meaning you, me, the kids but not Lucas? What could any of this ‘mean for our family’ except gaining something, George? I don’t care who they are in relation to him, I don’t care what he’s known. If anything that means he deserves more of a chance at something else than any of us and we can give that to him. What good does our privilege that we’ve had our whole lives as you just said, do us if we don’t pay it forward? You don’t think I would do something where for a second I was unsure what kind of effect it could have on our children. I wouldn’t. They come first, they have always come first and that includes him now. I have seen him every morning for the past year and a half, longer. Every evening, breakfasts, dinners, he comes home and tells me about his day at school. Not her. There’s no contemplation about this, I’m already his mother more than she is. ”

“I know you wouldn’t, darling. I’m sorry if that came across the wrong way. That’s not what I was saying or thinking at all. Lucas is part of our family. I’m on your team. If it’s what Lucas wants, if he’s ready to testify against his parents in front of court and if the lady said our chances are looking better than good, then let’s do it. Let’s talk to him. Let’s make it official.”

“ Yeah. A fight, of course. So what? I don’t think they’ll hand us anything, I’m sure they’d love to put up a fight. But be a realistic. You know how these things work, that’s a fight we’ve practically already won. We’re talking about a month, two maximum. There is no court on this earth that would decide in their favor. Especially not if Lucas himself testifies it’s what he wants and you don’t think he’d rather stay under their guardianship. ”

“But at the end of the day, they are still his parents. Lucas has known life very different for the past seventeen years than we have our whole lives. We don’t know what he wants or how he feels. Let’s ask him and then contemplate the next steps. Maybe also talk to the kids. Okay? I want Lucas out of their grip just as much as you do, but it is big and we have to know what it will mean for our family.”

“ How, George? How? How much bigger than what we’re currently doing is it, really? It would just mean he belongs and there can be no contestation to that fact. That they can have no legal say over him. He already practically lives here, we give him food, clothes. But it isn’t about that, it’s about family and we’re his family more than they are. It’s about making that official. ”

"We are. We are his family. I just have this feeling they won’t hand him to us without a fight, Joyce. And that’s a fight Lucas has to agree with."

“ The kids are all right, but.. it is about the kids. About Lucas, specifically. I’ve been looking at adoption more over the past week, at the process, what our options are, even talked to a really nice lady on the phone. She thinks our chances are looking better than good. George, I know what you’re going to say, but we have to talk about it. We have to talk about. Listen, I couldn’t.. I just couldn’t stop thinking about what happened at the beginning of the summer. When the boys, y’know, got into that fight at school. And that the school had to call that woman, too. I don’t want them to have to call her or him needing signature of a legal guardian and having to, you know, whatever it may be.. You never know what she’ll do or say.. He’s, of course, already a fixed part of this family, but we would be able to offer him a whole different set of opportunities. Give him security and a family even after he turns 18.. It’s really only about making it official at this point but doing that would, I think, change a lot of things and change a lot of things for the better. Yeah.. that’s that for my monologue. Sorry, honey, you barely got a spoonful in, but.. I want to talk about this sooner rather than later. ”

“[..] Joyce. I agree. I agree completely. But.. adopting? That’s big. That’s really big. Even for us.”

“ Here you go, honey, probably even better warmed up.. Sorry we ate without you again, everyone was hungry. I feel like I’ve barely had dinner with you these past two weeks. Is work that bad? There’s also something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about. ”

“Looks delicious as always. Thank you, darling. It’s nothing to worry about, I promise. It’s still the case I told you about a few weeks ago, but I have a feeling we found our guy. I’ll make up for the missed dinners soon. Something you’ve been meaning to talk to me about? I’m all ears. Are the kids all right?”

“ Yeah, yeah, I know. I know. Mom’s done the whole ‘male pride’ talk before. I’m staying very humble. Thanks, dad. Good to hear that from you. It’s just.. delicate, I feel like, and I’m not always sure what the best way is. ”

“It is a delicate subject. Lucas has found an incomparable friend in you, Benji. Most people wouldn’t care as much as you do. I need you to be aware of that. I just know he simply appreciates your care, no matter if it’s the best way or any way at all. And this is not only about Lucas, but with all things in life. When you grow older, you realize sometimes you say a lot of things you don’t believe yourself until you make them happen.”

“ Yeah.. and I mean, I get that. I don’t think I would like that either.. Probably the pride mom always tells me not to cultivate, huh? Yeah.. funny, I said that to him and he said I sound like mom. But it’s you. Totally didn’t realize that. ”

“And your mother is very right about that, son. Pride can be a dangerous thing. Some people are so proud, they’d never accept financial help. May it be from friends, family or the government. They’d rather struggle than to admit they need charity, but Lucas is a smart boy and so are you. It’s okay to seek help when you need it, alright? Well. That’s how things with the Fosters work. If we don’t find a way, we’ll make one. You don’t have to worry about it. I'm very proud of you for coming to me. ”

“ You sure? Seems like.. ah, wait, no. She was just saved. And now they’re kissing. I think even I can tell you the rest of this movie.. Thanks. Uhm, you know the roadtrip idea we mentioned over dinner? Dani’s got family in California and she said they could get us a good price for accommodation for a couple days. And it is! It is a good price. Fantastic even. But obviously there’s gonna be other expenses too and gas and food and.. that stuff. And Lucas was.. yeah. A bit worried about it, I think. I know he hates charity but I know he wants to go and I want him to go, and.. I was just wondering your opinion on that.   ”

“My opinion on that.. Benji. Lucas has been living with us for a while. He’s a good kid, good manners and having him around has brought us many amazing memories. He hasn’t had it easy, so simply getting handed money from others may not be as easy as it may be for someone else. Making him uncomfortable is the least thing we want to do. I will talk to your mother about it, alright? We’ll find a way.”

“ Hey dad. Sorry, sorry, didn’t mean to startle you. I’ll let you get back to your movie in a sec, I was just wondering something. ”

“Benji. Ah, you didn’t. The movie is basically over and I've seen it before. What’s up? Have a seat, son.”

What was your honest initial reaction when you heard you were going to be a dad?

“I couldn’t believe it. The first thought that went through my head was: She’s pregnant. She’s having my baby. I was ecstatic. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t always think Joyce and I would start having children when we’ve finished college, but life doesn’t always go as planned. And that’s good. I can’t wait to be dad.”

“ My knight in shining armour. That’s very sweet, but hardly going to need your backing up for this. Only issue might be that I’m not officially Mrs. George Foster yet – you know how he is. And that I’d rather handle on my own. And then when you come for the rest of the weekend, you can back me up all you want. ”

“Fine. I’ll come Saturday morning. Let me know when you get there, at least.”

“ Yeah, I’ve given it some thought now.. I wanna go up next weekend, give ‘em a visit. And I think I want to be on my own to tell daddy.. But if I go next Friday, it might be nice if you came the Saturday and we stay until Sunday night? ”

“Are you sure it’s good for you to be telling him by yourself? We could do that, definitely. I’d just think it’d be a better idea if I was there too to back you up on this.”

_george foster_ is aged _25_ and majoring in _criminal justice_.

-- It was Ted Bundy who awoke George’s passion for crime and justice. He was a teen at the time and remembers following the case on tv all too vividly; when they found the girls’ bodies and eventually the murderous man who was behind all the cruelty. He was frustrated by the police in this case. How they would’ve already had him one or two times before if they wouldn’t have been so blinded by his psychopathic charm. George is currently in his final year of studying criminal justice and it’s been been treating him well. He has made a handful of good friends for himself and most importantly he met the love of his life, Joyce Howell. Rationality and evidence are things George believes and builds on. He doesn’t believe in God or a higher force, but he believes in love, family, the law and justice of the world. Giving the baby Joyce and him are expecting away, was never up to debate. He knows she’s the woman he wants to spend his life with. It wasn’t planned, but it might be his biggest blessing yet. --
