Making of Athangudi tiles is a process one has to see it to believe it. Athangudi is a small village in Karaikudi, these tiles are part of the Chettinad heritage with its unique simple designs and long life. Making of Athangudi tiles is more like painting. The making starts with pouring a mixture of cement & colour oxide on a glass surface, then a thin layer of sand in sprinkled so as cover the design on top of this thick layer of cement is put and later it's cured with water for 21 days. In the end the finished product is better than other tiles in the market, as its Eco friendly and durable. One of the most fascinating facts is, as years pass by Athangudi tiles looks better, it's made to last three to four generations. #Repost @sigmaphotoindia with @repostapp ・・・ Hello! This is @fotobaba on #Day7 of the #SigmaInstagrmaTakeover As a traveller and a biker, the books I read are also along the same theme. At one time I was reading a book by P.G Tenzing, an IAS officer who decided to give up his job and ride the country on his Bike. In the book I read about a little village named Karaikudi and a hotel which served authentic Chettinad food and it also talked about a lady who managed the entire hotel with a big team of dedicated staff. Surprisingly, when Rahul of the @galleri5 fame collaborated with @kishiarora and me: We decided to take the road towards south. Kishi is a chef and insisted that we take a detour and go to Karaikudi to have a meal at The Bangala. At The Bangala I got the opportunity to meet one of the most amazing characters of the book Mrs Meyyappan. A lady who is an exemplar to her community and very kind hearted. Her hospitality and care to detail has also put the Chettinad on the international map. I now see The Bangala as home away from home. Oh, and the food needs a post of its own! As I was travelling in and around Karaikudi in a car, I happen to watch dozens of people, mostly dressed in orange color sarees or dhoti and walking barefoot. As a photographer my instinct was to stop the driver. I realized men and women have been walking for two days and enduring to the temple of Samayapuram Mariamman in the nearby district of Tiruchirappalli. The temple attracts lots of devotees during the auspicious days. . 💡Tip - Never try to sneak in and take photographs. People know that you are there to click pictures. Every time when I visit any historical place, I make it point to travel back in time. New tarred roads replaced with muddy and rocky roads. People walking on the streets and bowing before the rich Chetiyars who speed away in their decorated chariots, sounds of hoofs slowly fading away as they vanish in the dust. The British army men marching, how kids would get excited and come running to see them. Those big mansion which still look so magnificent how it would have looked in those good old days. The in-house accountant sitting in the courtyard and always busy counting and entering numbers in the big dusty register. The big family living in these mansions, the hustle bustle in the kitchen which would be busy throughout the day serving all kinds of food. The army of helpers in the mansions, keeping it clean and spotless and how the women in the family controlled this army to run the house smoothly. . . . Walking through the streets of Karaikudi early morning, I started my day with hot milky tea and later saw a lady making Paniyaram, decided to share the freshly made Paniyaram with someone sitting in front of the temple, I ate one and gave him four. Then I kept on wandering through narrow streets, soon I travelled back in time in the Chettinad era, the big mansions which still remind you of the glorious days. But I had to force myself to be aware of the oncoming traffic. As I was appreciating the design and architecture someone standing in front of the building asked why I'm talking pictures, as an insider people sometimes forget where they are living and sadly this ignorance is ruining lots of Chettinad mansion that are getting neglected and slowly our history is becoming dust. #Karaikudi #Tamilnadu #architecture #travel #fotobaba #India #incredibleindia #history (at Karaikudi)
