"Dad's at home" photo project. As a working photographer, I make it a habit to undertake 1 or 2 personal photo projects a year. This helps me push my own creative boundaries that’s often limited in commissioned work to narrates the client’s vision or concept. Personal projects also help me “grow” as an artist. Three years ago, I started a photo project photographing “stay-at-home” dads in Toronto. I used to be a stay-at-home dad myself. I met many stay-at-home fathers at the park and community centres. I decided to do this project to highlight the ever-growing role of fathers as homemakers. States Zosia Bielski of the Globe and Mail, “The number of fathers staying at home with their children has doubled since 1989, and the fastest growing segment of these men are staying home because they’ve chosen to take care of their kids, according to a new report from the Pew Research Center” (“Stay-at-home dads on the rise – increasingly because they want to be” 5 June 2014). Reasons for the growth of the father-as-homemaker range from the global economic recession to the simple desire of the father to be with the children. Since the mid-1970s, the rate of stay-at-home fathers in Canada has risen 120 percent. I’ve heard the stories of families impacted and involved in the shifting demographic – of their struggle with stigmas and their newfound routines and joys. My goal was to document unique visual narratives of this trend one photograph at a time. I called the project Dads at Home. I was actively developing it as the visual archiving of a relevant trend in Canadian familial structure and functionality as well as a contribution to the diverse artistic culture of Ontario. This project became larger than I anticipated. My request for a grant to complete this project was unsuccessful and consequently most of the image files from the project got corrupted when an external drive crashed. A big lesson to back up regularly.

It's been a while since I made a post. Lots of things are happening. I'm hoping for things to wind down a bit so I can finally settle down and share some new work.

The Slam Poet Project (1). The purpose of this photo series is to capture the emotion; passion and stories of slam poets while in their element of performing pieces that are personal to them. “You, are the reason I will never be able to kiss the lips of my unborn son. He will grow up thinking I’m stuck in the cave of allegory Never understanding that he is my light and in his eyes I see truth. I’ve coated myself in apathy; he’ll only be able to experience a penumbra of my love I will never be able to change his diapers; Out of the fear, that you left some of your traits in me . On the days he asks for my shoulder to cry on; I will hesitate; because I’m terrified of mental flashbacks that happen (every time I’m touched)(3x) by another male. He will not be able to go to sleepovers; Because peter piper might lure him away with the sound of his favorite video games …. To a place where no young boy should know … A room invented to shatter bliss and rip away innocence Where pleas for help are muted by the sound of digital characters; ( it’s me mario) Hands are pressed down ( ( it’s me mario) and face is pushed into pillow (it’s me mario); And he experiences a pain that far is worse than any flu shot ( it’s me mario) He will lie motionless until the pain begins to dissipate And then push himself off of the bed with the assistance of its springs Entering a state of perpetual emptiness … At that moment my biggest fear might materialize … He will become me. A shell of a human being Who helps others a the drop of a dime In hopes that he can live vicariously through them Because he taught himself to numb his emotions so long ago .. The only person he will be able to talk to is his therapist and when he tells her his stories she say How did that make you feel How did that make you feel How did that make you feel He will sit there perplexed; for the word at the end if the sentence is alien to him My son It does not have to end like this You don’t have to become me … Every year 1 in 20 boys in North America are victims of sexual assault a number that’s probably higher because I’m sure many like me don’t report it .. Because they are ashamed This kind of thing does not happen to boys And they grow Into men that can’t express themselves … Because men don’t cry (repeat twice Real men don’t cry ! My son, my wells have been dry for so long and I don’t feel any stronger This Hercules compels is quite crippling So if that day comes and I prays that it doesn’t, I will pick you up hold you in my arms and suffer through a thousand nightmares So you learn that; (1)crying doesn’t make you weak, (2)you are not alone, (3) and daddy loves you !” “Digital nightmare" Kevan Davison
