second draft of my zine publication for places.
So I hope you're all well! I’ve been a little MIA over the past couple of months as my foundation ended quite abruptly due to miss rona, however I'm now completing an illustration degree! these are some of the first pieces of work I've produced looking at line quality.
These were made in the studio through observational drawing using ink and very sad looking basil plant. I'm really happy with the first one on this post looking back through them, this is just a brief selection of drawings from those made in the session.
The frames arrived for my commissions and they look lush 🥺
Just a little bit of information regarding my commissions, if you’re interested shoot me a message or email me at [email protected]
I’m really happy with how this commision came out now it’s framed, the freckles were a challenge as I’ve never done anything like them before but I think it turned out well.
Just some Line work commissions I have done, experimenting with line work in illustrations has been really fun and breaks up my time from working on heavier realism portraits.
A Storm In A Teacup.
This is the third animation I produced as part of the full secs animation project we were set on britishness. I chose to animate a storm of cats and dogs into a china teacup. I felt that the animals represented the idiom “raining cats and dogs’ well and would compliment the storm in a cup I chose to portray. The themes of weather and tea were some of the first ideas I thought of when brainstorming things I thought were British and I think they communicate that identity well. I am also really happy with how far my animation skills have come in this project. the gif isn't without faults, but I feel that I have been able to draw a professional quality image with more complex animation as the project progressed. I particularly like the way I did the lightning in the background I think it really adds to the gif which would otherwise b e very static if it weren't for the rain. I also think that I have been able to experiment with different techniques through the project and found what works best for me, I did this in the colouring style I used as well as the text I used in the slates. The previous animations I did were very flat with the colouring which was intentional but I think adding the shadows gave the animation a more complete look subtly.
I think through continuing to work in animation I would be able to produce a better image, it is a little jittery at the end, but am happy with the final image.
adding the raincloud and the dogs for raining cats and dogs, I realised that the front view of the dog isn't clear enough as a smaller picture for the reader to recognise what it is so I am going to redo it as a side profile with a more distinct outline.
Drawing the teacup for my next animation, a storm in a teacup. I felt that tea and the weather were key aspects of being British so I wanted to combine them. I’ve chosen a classic china teacup over a more normal mug that we use now because I feel that its a better communicator of Britishness and more recognisable to an audience. I have continued to draw the images by hand then develop them digitally as I did the other animations but I have used more variation in my shading as I felt that the other animations were a little flat even if the style was a more 2d animation. I really like how this cup is looking for colours and style so will now just draw the rest of the animation.
Reflection.
For this animation I wanted to show the image of a father on holiday getting sunburnt in the sun while he relaxes. For me sunburn and annual holidays are one of the first things that come to mind when I think of What makes us British. Tanning is seen as key and if you have to burn first to get an even tan(so is the belief of many british women) then so be it. so I chose to show a gradual burn and the ice cream melting.
To produce this animation I used a graphics tablet to edit different layers saving each frame as a jpeg then loading them into a stack in photoshop which I could export as a gif.
I don't think that this animation was as successful as my Feed her animation so on my next one I will be looking to combine some of the techniques I used.
