What does mean for me to be an Indiegame Developer?
It means the money of something valuable and that truly hurts you like the money of your MBA to be spended in the development. Or the money you saved several months or years before.
It means to have 1, 2 or months in debs with your rent.
It means to explain everybody you love that you are not crazy. Over and over.
It means to have 10 or more people to call your main character “Dickman” in steam.
It means to change parts of the game or the story that you really wanted in the game but they where hard, expensive or (most important of all) not adding value.
It means to lose people in the team that you though they where staying all the process.
It means to commit tons of mistakes. But with every 10 or more tries with the coding process always come the glory moment when you make it and you feel like Steve Wozniak.
It means that in three days you get 30% funded in Kickstarter and 7 days frozen, like god playing with your sanity.
It means to participate and win in every contest that you never though you can make it in the sake of video games.
It means to not having anyone in your city and barely in your country to consult or to follow they're steps.
It means to compete with the best of the world with the resources you have. People that when you are resting they are also doing the best they can.
It means to (if you have a couple) say no to several commitments, the matter of fact this will be also a trend with you social life in general.
It means to have a faith and a love that can several times make you doubt if you don´t have enough passion to go though hell.
I know that i´m not giving any king of motive to make the indiedev world glamorous, but i reserve it for the end.
To be an indiedev for me means to have chances i barely imagined even if is my first game. Means to receive help from people around the world that don´t have anything to do with you but they want you to succed (People of Guacamelee or even Angry Birds!).
It means to have kids having fun, grown ups being frustrated and challenged to discover the secrets of your game, to have people around the world playing, writing, recording themselves making reviews, writing in languages you didn´t know they exist and it just the beginning. For the matter of fact the game is being apart from you a little bit and starts to become real and have a life of its own.
Right now ( in the day 275) the game is in a though moment, but it will go though it, i´m from Merida Yucatan México, a small place in a peninsula at the southeast part of Mexico. A place full of tourism and food. The video game industry obviously barely exist here.
I decided one day after watching indie game the movie to quit my job security after several years in graphic design and apps to pursue a dream that only the online publication and the new technology that are in the hands of anyone in the world. If you want to start in indiegaming (i have just one year in this) ask yourself the real reason why you want to make it.
Writing down and read it every month to not forget it in the way.
I have the same old paper that i wrote down before starting Flat Kingdom a project that is right now in Kickstarter that is trying to encouraging people in my city to try not lose the faith in they're dreams and if they really want to make a video game actually to start to doing it. Not to get into jobs they´re hate or emigrating.
Really, in this days you don´t need to live in California or Tokio (but it helps a lot) to make an indiegame. If you want to start in this madness or asking anything about the project you can send me an email to [email protected]
I wish you the best of lucks to make the next Limbo, the Binding of Isaac or Minecraft! What does it means to you to be an indie dev?
The main plot is about a 2D world slowly becoming 3D. This happens because a mysterious thief steals a magic jewel from the Square King and kidnaps the Princess Tri.

You have to master the ability to change your form between circle, square or triangle at the right moment.
"I saw that the game was a very fun-looking puzzle action title with a protagonist similar to Kirby. So I thought of a theme that symbolized the cuteness of the characters while having plenty of motion. I hope everyone enjoys this game". Manami Matsumae

In the world of Flat Kingdom there is a legend of a wizard that created 6 magical jewels to bring order to a world of chaos. Flat must stop him before it's too late, but he is always one step ahead, the plot will unfold as you play, so a simple story will become something so much bigger. Why does the evil thief Hex want the chaos of the kingdom? Who wrote the journal? What happens when you collect all the jewels?
You have to discover the answer to these mysteries finishing the stages and visiting them again when you gain new skills that let you discover new paths in the adventure.

The game is still in development. We recently uploaded a demo and displayed it live in different video game events in our city, where the players gave us their feedback to improve our game.
We are finishing up the first levels and polishing a few details to begin the new areas of the game.
We have a long way ahead of us, we know, but we're on the right track and all we need is a little help from you to make this project a reality!

Who likes boss battles?
In Flat Kingdom there are plenty of them!
We tried to achieve the kind of suspense and epicness that the boss battles at the end of the temples of Zelda get. The matter of fact every level have a minibus like this one and a colosal one at the ending that also gives you a new skill.

I always liked games with interesting Save Points, in almost all modern games are automatic, but in Flat Kingdom we to did a system that is a mix between the crystal of Final Fantasy but with the charm of the war prisoners of Metal Slug.

Meet the Square King, the wise ruler of the Flat Kingdom! The first inspiration for him were the poker cards and the Russian constructivism. Because he is literally a square he is kind of a poker card with walrus moustache.
He may not look like it, but in his youth he was an adventurer too! He and his wife explored the whole Flat Kingdom, united the lands and documented all of its secrets. That's why he knows every corner of his kingdom.
After the mysterious death of his wife, he devoted himself to his kingdom and its people. He truly cares for his daughter and the welfare of his lands, and seems genuinely concerned with the theft of his magical jewel (notice the empty spot on his crown?) and disappearance of the princess.
He would save his kingdom himself, but he now has a lot more responsibilities and duties, so he must stay in his castle with his people... especially in this time of need. Luckily for him, you're quite the hero yourself!

Originally, we planned to have the double jump, stomp and dash abilities as upgrades for you to get later in the adventure, however, we decided to grant them from the beginning of the game so you can show off some cool moves right from the get go! Don't worry, there are other secret and more awesome abilities to learn later on.
