Marcel started to laugh. “I have rarely seen someone mess up so spectacularly, I have to admit... it is hard to believe he didn’t plan on that going wrong.”

“ And what motive would he have to kill Thierry? You forget that Klaus is desiccated, not dead. Death can’t be undone, but desiccation… ” she allowed him to linger on that thought, without giving him any hint that in truth she was no closer to forming a plan to get him back. Marcel had been thorough, and with his magic rules back again, he had made it difficult for Kendra to do anything but work with her coven. “ Ye- well…- ” the blonde stuttered, knowing that she had no defence when it came to Klaus and how easy he found it to kill someone who had even just mildly annoyed him. Marcel was right about that, if it had been the other way round… “ Checking up on me? ” Kendra repeated, an eyebrow raising slightly. “ That sounds as if you care, and I know that isn’t the case. So how many guys to you have following me on a daily basis? One? Two? ”

“Does he even need a motive for that? Like he never killed before without a specific reason. I don’t know, undermine me, leave me to stand more alone?” By now he didn’t care why Klaus had done it. No reason could give him back his friend, so why would he go and look for excuses? “I know he’s not dead, or I would be dead as well, and I wasn’t exactly aiming for that.” He shrugged. Finn and him had done a pretty good job in getting Klaus out of the way. He wasn’t going to be intimidated by a bluffing witch. “And desiccation can be undone. It just won’t, in his case. He deserved this, Kendra.” Not that he’d manage to convince the witch of that... she was and would probably always been one of Klaus’ greatest supporters. “See? You know I’m right, girl... I’m not a tyrant like he was...” He shrugged. “Sure. There are different reasons to check up on someone and I really want to know who’s walking around in my city.” He chuckled. “It changes. One at least.”, he winked.

“Don’t patronize me, I know how these things work and I’m aware that not every request of the council can be fulfilled. And I don’t want you to appease me – my feelings against you are on a personal level aside from quarter business. I want the voice of the wolves to be taken seriously and that’s something that can be done.” Gabriel was many things, but fake or dishonest was not among those. He was not going to sugarcoat or pretend in order to be on the king’s good side, and in a way he respected that Marcel treated him the same. “It’s not a threat, the vampire and werewolf war is old news and I have no interest in perpetuating it. I only say that to say I understand your motives, I’m not blind to our nature.” Part of the reason the werewolf population nearly went extinct was because vampires and hunters sought to eliminate the threat they posed on full moons. It was fact at this point. The boy may be a hothead but he wasn’t so naive as to make senseless threats that would endanger the same wolves he spent his daily life teaching. “Wrong ally.” Gabriel scoffs. “If that’s how you see it, there’s no way I can change that. But I assure you it’s not that simple.” With this he grabs another beer to ease his nerves about the conversation. “You’ve already won, Marcel. The way you love this city and will never hesitate to fight for it is the same way I am about the wolves. So, aside from all of the arguing just consider that.”

“It seems you don’t understand, Gabriel...” He’d rather return to his music than deal with a stubborn wolf, but it seemed his playtime for today was over. “Yeah, yeah, you don’t like me, I know that...” Gabriel was too stubborn in holding on to the past where he had made it one of his main goals to suppress the wolves. Not without reason though, but that wasn’t something he was going to discuss with the young hothead. “The wolves have a spot on the council. You can talk along, just like every other faction here. It just seems you haven’t exactly made yourself popular enough by barricading yourself in the bayou.” Harboring fugitives, he might add to that, but honestly... it was Finn who had problems with that, not him. Hope was out of the question when it came to revenge, if you asked Marcel, even when he knew that would be a discussion point between him and Finn if they’d even come out of the bayou. “I know about the length of that werewolf/vampire war, Gabriel. I’ve been around to see it a lot longer than you have. So have a few of my guys who would have been dead if I hadn’t stepped in. You don’t get to play the victim here because I managed to eliminate a threat to this city. Or do you think that your ancestors were willing to talk, just like you’re doing now?” He had seen enough werewolf attacks to laugh about that notion. “Not that simple? As far as I remember it, you and your wolves sided with Klaus. Klaus got beaten, you ran because Kendra warned you. Those are the facts. That’s what you have to live with.” He nodded. “Hell yeah, I won. And I’m doing everything I can to keep this city the New Orleans I’m proud of. If that can be achieved with the wolves, fine, then we can talk about that, but I’m not so sure about that. I’m not going to sacrifice more of my guys for something I don’t believe in.”

“Maybe one day I can rectify that, but spare me the lecture on how you do everything for a purpose. You knew what you signed up for when you took over as the ruler of the city, so whether it’s your fault or not you are the one everyone will look to for answers.” The wolf shrugs, finding it extremely difficult to empathize for the man who slaughtered his kin and cursed any who dared to survive. Vampires are always so quick to move past their misdeeds and expect a clean slate. “No, we aren’t just sacrificial lambs. If anything we were more of a threat because we can take countless vampires down on a single full moon, and to eliminate that threat you did what any good dictator would do. I understand your methods even if they were completely wrong.” When the piano keys came to a sudden stop, Gabriel stood tall, brown eyes unflinching as they stared daggers into those of the vampire king. With a laugh he responds to Marcel’s statement about the swamp being his business. “That’s your problem you arrogant son of a bitch, you see a wolf and automatically see an outsider. Forget the swamp! We are citizens of New Orleans too and we have a say in this damn city that we were forced out of, you may be king but show some damn respect.”

“Oh, I knew. That didn’t include acting on every whim of every member of that council, Gabriel. You should know by now that a position of power doesn’t mean you can satisfy everyone.” And honestly... keeping those linked to Klaus under control was higher on his priority list than keeping a bunch of wolves who locked themselves in a swamp satisfied. “Now you’re threatening me and my guys? You think that’s going to have any positive effect?” If anything, it would make sure those concerns would be even further down his priority list. “I would have expected a more cooperative attitude from a council member, Gabriel.” Then again... the wolf had always tended towards Klaus, who had given him more power in the first place. He shouldn’t be surprised that that hadn’t changed. “As far as I remember, you were the ones leaving the Quarter after siding with the wrong ally. That’s what happens, Gabriel. Actions have consequences. You can’t just turn them back when those consequences are those you don’t want to bear.”

He almost wanted to laugh, this whole thing was so ridiculous. Squaring off against Marcel was ridiculous. Coming to New Orleans was ridiculous. Fighting on Klaus Mikaelson’s side, of all people, was absolutely ridiculous. That was the nature of his job, they had alliances and he had to uphold them no matter his opinion on it. Hopefully after this, they could cut ties from New Orleans and just move on. “Really? Is he dead?” Ivan damn near snorted as he started to back up, “Because unless he’s dead, he’s not gone and therefore not beaten. Klaus’s reputation far exceeds yours, Marcel, no matter how much you huff and puff and threaten to blow everyone’s house down – No one will forget him and until he’s dead and gone for good, no one will think he’s gone for good.” Ivan was just spitting totally bullshit at this point but it was just too damn hard not to. “You’re right, she knows who cares about her,” he started to turn around, licking his lips. She knew he cared about her. But he came here on a mission to kill someone she loved, he came back engaged to another woman. Who’s to say that if she was in the middle of him and Marcel, who she’d defend and how far she’d go to do so. In that moment, Ivan felt a spark of emotion. In that moment, he felt some amount of sadness. “Oh I’m sure we’ll see each other again,” he was fully turned around, talking away with a tight grip on his boy, “Just a matter of when.”

Marcel clenched his fists in his pockets. The questions this man was asking were infuriating and clearly meant to undermine his power. “No, he is not...”, he answered pointedly. “Or I’d be dead as well, and I didn’t fancy that very much.” Besides... he had no idea how to permanently kill Klaus. Daggering him had been enough of a challenge already, one he hadn’t been able to do all by himself. “But he’s eliminated soundly enough not to worry about him anymore. No matter how much everyone is trying to convince themselves of the opposite. You’re chasing ghosts, Ivan.” Just like Klaus’ lackeys were doing in general... they were they ones who’d cause the problems now and Marcel hoped they’d never find Klaus, or the war was really on. “I just never thought you’d be such a friend to him. Isn’t that a betrayal as well?” He cocked his head, listening to the bullshit about Davina. Yes, she’d tell him the truth if she didn’t agree with him, but she was one of the persons he was sure about. “If you’re too stubborn to go back where you belong, I’m sure it’ll happen. Let’s hope for your health it’ll be later.” He watched the witch turn around and walk away and made a mental note to put out a warning to his guys to keep an eye on him.

“Marcel, and please make note that I say this with absolute disrespect,” he stepped forward now, right up to the vampire, “I don’t really give a shit who’s king here, I will never answer to a vampire. And if you want you want to try and make me, try me.” It was ballsy, challenging Marcel head on like he was. Could even get him killed but he stood talk and unafraid. “You know,” he even smirked a little like the little jackass he was, “It’s because of how you run things in this city that made it so easy for Klaus to take everything from you.” The brunette took a step back, still smirking. “Yes, she had grown up and for her sake, I hope she’s grown out of her misguided relationship with you,” he shook his head, “I’d say we’re done here, wouldn’t you? Now you can go ahead and try to kill me but I don’t think you’re ready for the fallout of that decision.”

“The disrespect was clear from the moment you set foot again in my city, Ivan...” He looked up to the witch, hating the height difference that made it impossible to loom over him. “You should. I’m making the rules here. I’m the one saying who breaks them and who doesn’t and I have to power to enforce them. If you don’t like that, find another city to play in. Not mine.” He smirked. “I’ll make you. I made everyone here listen. Why would you be the exception on the rule?” There were no exceptions. He had sent his oldest friend to the Garden for breaking the rules. He didn’t know why Ivan would think he would be more inclined to let a stranger go than Thierry. He sighed. He still couldn’t think of his friend without feeling the pain of losing him. “Klaus has no place here anymore. We beated him. And his family.” The only Mikaelson still walking around was the one who turned on the rest. He smiled again, almost mocking. “I’m sorry to disappoint you, Ivan, but she knows who cares about her. And she doesn’t abandon them. Neither do I.” He nodded. “We were done here before you even came to town. Now leave. Don’t let me catch you here again.” If he could have, he would have killed the witch, before he would become the victim himself. Unfortunately, Ivan was right. The fall out would be too great.

“ You took away the man that I love, and you took my home from me. What kind of fool would walk away and give up fighting to have those things back? ” even though Kendra was far from cracking the code to getting Klaus back, she rather enjoyed making Marcel think she knew something he didn’t. “ Why? Are you worried? ” the blonde turned all of her attention on him as she stepped towards him. “ It almost seems as if you’re here to check up on me to make sure I’m not doing something you and your rules don’t agree with. I think there’s a small part of you that’s scared of me, Marcel. ”

“You act like Klaus was innocent. He was the one killing my best friend, Kendra. I didn’t act out of spite. I acted because that man you claim to love was threatening and killing me and my people.” He shrugged. “You’d be wise to just get over it and go on with your life. Klaus isn’t the kind of person who deserves your pity.” He cocked his head, knowing he probably would fail in letting Kendra see the reason behind his actions. “I’m not a tyrant. I protected you, let you go, because of the links you have to Davina. If I would have been Klaus, you’d be dead by now. Ever thought about that?” And no, Kendra alone didn’t worry him. The sheer amount of people questioning him lately did, combined with the influx of new supernaturals who didn’t always seem to mean well with him. “I’ve been checking on people as long as I’m in charge.”, he smiled. “I don’t think there’s anything new or particularly worrisome about that.”

Even if it was harmless and even if she was a lot more grown, she could not help her defiant nature that peaks here and there. Davina smacked the hand that tousled her hand and quickly smoothed out the mess he made of her hair  ❝ Okay if I am back we need to have some rules. I’ve been trying to tell you this since I was sixteen, hopefully you will listen… Not more treating me like a kid. While we are on the subject of scolding, you and I need to have a talk, but not here. Is it too bold of me to expect a room open for me at your place? ❞

“I don’t have to. I want to, that’s a big difference, D. You deserve everything I can give you.”, he winked. No matter that she had spent years abroad, he still felt for her like a father for a daughter. Including the urge to spoil her. He sighed. “I thought I was the one setting the rules here? Times really have changed, haven’t they?” He resisted the urge to tousle her hair again after she removed his hand, just to tease her. “Hey... where am I treating you like a kid?” He raised his eyebrows. “Scolding and a talk in one sentence. Am I in trouble?” He did laugh it away though. This was Davina and although they could clash, he knew they loved each other. He shook his head. “Not bold at all. You’ll always have a place in my house, D. Where is your luggagge?”

“Heavy is the head that wears the crown, you may have forgotten the gruesome acts of your previous reign but not all of us are so quick to do the same.” The wolf retorts with a nonchalant attitude. “Oh yeah, by your piano playing I can tell your hands are quite busy. But, it’s not just about the council – despite my grievances with you personally I am interested in maintaining some sort of unity between the factions. Especially now since something bad seems to be on the horizon.”

“I have a lot more experience with wearing a crown than you have, Gabriel. I know it comes with responsibilities and I’ve never shied away from them. I just find it remarkable that all everyone is capable of lately is blaming me for whatever they think goes wrong in this city.” It wasn’t perfect, not by far, but you’d think that after creating order and preventing a full out war, he’d have a bit more credit than he got now. “Gruesome acts... Maybe you should use very big words. After all, practically everything I did back then had a reason. It’s not like your kind has only played the sacrificial lamb.” He stopped playing and turned towards Gabriel. “That’s exactly what I’ve been doing for years. And I know something is coming.” More and more of Klaus’ old supporters, to be exact. “I just don’t see how that’s any of your business. You got the swamp. And you’ve got all the freedom in the world to do whatever you like there.”

“I don’t have to justify my coven to you, Marcel,” and he meant it. He wasn’t going to stand here and defend his people when he knew it wouldn’t make a damn difference to the wanna be king. “The more you talk, the more you make my job more pleasure than business,” his expression was completely deadpan, not a single shred of dear showing. “Are you? Sound like a lie you’ve told so many times you’re starting to believe it.” his grip on his bow tightened a little, “If this peace you claim is real then you have no reason to care about my presence here because I’ll have no reason to be here. Maybe you should re-evaluated. Is it peaceful for everyone or just your vampires?” When he countered about Davina, Ivan nodded. She hated Klaus, that was true and maybe she would’ve been happy to hear he was gone. But she wouldn’t have wanted this for her sister and that he was dead set sure of. “Passed in and out of it, really?” now he was starting to feel some spark of anger inside him, “It shouldn’t have been something you had to learn.” 

“You are here, in my town, where I make and uphold the laws. Maybe you should reconsider your idea that you don’t have to answer to me, because as long as you’re here, you do.” He wasn’t going to let Ivan barge in here and disturb everything he had build without even a bit of resistance. Last time he had been challenged, Klaus had won. That wasn’t going to happen again. “Ask around. Of course there are always people wanting me to fail. You being one of them.” And not all supporters of Klaus had disappeared. “There’s no ruler in history who pleased everything. But well...”, he smiled. “This isn’t a popularity contest, after all. Being the boss means making impopular decisions as well. You can never please everyone.” He smirked. “And honestly? I don’t aim to please the likes of you.” He shook his head. “I know you from the last time you were here. You’ve clearly got your mind made up already about how honestl everything here goes. I’m not even going to spend the energy trying to convince you of your wrong.” He sighed. “She wasn’t more than a scared child when I found her. She’s grown up. I had to do the same with her. I just don’t see how that’s any of your business.”

“ I prefer the element of surprise. ” she spoke with a gentle smirk upon her lips because she rather enjoyed knowing Marcel was on the outside and utterly clueless to any of her moves. “ After everything you and I have been through together, do you really think I would give up that easily? ”

“You always did...” Like that time she told on what he and Finn had been planning, therefore preventing half of the plan to be executed. Luckily the most important part was done by then. “You seemed to have given up, Kendra. YOu can’t blame me for thinking you’d stop causing trouble for me, finally. But here you are... looking for something specific here?”

“See? It takes a while for you to see logic, but at least you end up seeing it.” And it saved him the trouble of having to deal with a part of the police force that was working against him. The vampires were already tiring enough, he didn’t want to have to demand the human faction leaders to keep their people in check. “Klaus had the means to make everyone terrified. But not anymore. We’ve dealt with that.” And still, years later, Klaus managed to make his influence felt in town. Something that annoyed Marcel to no end. He smiled and patted Matt on the shoulder. “Good, good… maybe it was a good thing we had this conversation anyway.” He gestured to his car. “May I, or do you have something else we have to deal with?”

Matt raised his eyebrows but he didn’t really say anything. He wasn’t really sure what Marcel would do if things would go wrong. Yeah, he had been the one making those rules and such, but Matt doubted if he was any better than Klaus. When it came to protecting human, he knew that only humans could do that. Because in the end, the vampires didn’t really care about the humans. They were nothing but food, after all. “Yeah, I noticed.” And it was the fact that the vampires weren’t afraid anymore that worried him. He wasn’t a big fan of fear and such, but at least afraid vampires followed the rules. These ones? These ones didn’t. “No, you’re fine. You can go now. I guess we’ll see each other.”

Are we going to talk like we don’t know that it’s very much your problem,” he shook his head, narrowing his eyes, “Like we both don’t know exactly why I’m here.” The Russian gave a deep sigh, wondering if he could just kill Marcel right here and now and then wondered what exactly was stopping him from trying. “My coven has alliances with some here and we honor our alliances,” he stepped closer to Marcel, “I couldn’t care less about you or Klaus or what vampire is going to try and wear an imaginary crown next. I’m here for the ones you like to push around just because you can.” He wasn’t going to go off about how he was also, much to his dismay, here to restore the old way of the city. It made his skin itch just thinking about it. “Yeah, maybe you’re right. She was never a fan of Klaus,” he pursed his lips and tiled his head, “Then again, Finn killed one of her best friends. Maybe now she’ll stand up to the both of you.”I know she has, I was a big part of it for a couple years,” he didn’t say those words in any way that would implying taunting, that was too disrespectful towards Davina, “You don’t sound too sure about that.”

“You are making it my problem. I don’t get involved in matters half a world away, I don’t see why you and your coven just can’t return that favor. It’s not that hard, trust me.” He knew why Ivan was here. He knew what the witch wanted and it was not something he was going to let happen that easily. “O, I know. And we both know it’s not going to be that easy. Why don’t you just go back home, before I have to send you there?” In a coffin, most likely. He didn’t want to start killing witches too easily because it would break the already fragile peace there was in the Quarter, but he was itching to make an exception here. It would be self defense, after all. “We’re having a peace here, Ivan. I’m not the one who’s about to break it. You are.” If the witch attacked, he would strike back. He wasn’t going to play sitting duck. He hadn’t achieved what he was by doing nothing. “She would have been the first to cheer when Klaus went down.” Her hatred for the hybrid ran deep, after all. He just didn’t know where she would stand when it came to Finn. “You’ve passed in and out of it. Did you tell her why you went here? Because I’m pretty sure she’s not going to agree with you.” He shrugged and smirked. “I’ve learned not to think for her. She’s perfectly able to do that herself and tell me and everyone else what her conclusion is.”

Stepping outside from the cafe, Kendra fought to quickly hide her small notebook of spells into her bag because she knew that a pair of eyes or two were always on her. “ Can you believe I used to be one of those? ” she nodded towards the stalls of tarot card readers. “ You know, people will pay anything to hear what they want. ”

“O, I remember...” He might have given the witch some kind of safety because of her sister, but that didnt mean he didn’t remember what side she was on. He didn’t blame her for getting Hope to safety -she wasn just a kid, after all-, but he knew she hated him because of what he had done to Klaus. “I didn’t know you were back in town, Kendra. I thought you’d rather evade this place?”

Matt kept silent for a moment. The he shook his head and swallowed. “No, I kinda know he wouldn’t have stopped there.” He licked his lips and looked at the humans passing by, not knowing what Matt and Marcel were talking about, not knowing that they were surrounded by monsters. “But somehow vampires were terrified of him. I guess we all kinda were…” It wasn’t like life had been calm with Klaus in town. Actually, he had heard from quite a few people that New Orleans had been doing quite okay before the hybrid had come back to claim the town he called his. “Good.” Matt nodded and he crossed his arms over his chest. He felt something in the air and he didn’t really like that something. He hoped that somehow Marcel would be able to stop it, because he didn’t know what else to do, he didn’t know what to do if instead of making things better, things would get worse. “Right now, we’re at least not on different sides.” All Matt wanted was keeping the humans in New Orleans and his friends safe. He didn’t care who helped him. He didn’t care if it was Klaus or Marcel or anyone else. As long as the humans were safe, he would be fine.

“Well I guess in a way you have yourself to thank for my ‘too serious’ attitude. But you can tell me when you plan on getting around to our next council meeting –  they seem to be occurring less frequently as time passes.”

“O, so now it’s all my fault again? What is it lately with everyone blaming everything on me?” First Matt, now Gabriel. He knew things were brewing in the Quarter, he just hadn’t expected it from that side. “I’ll let you know. I’ve got a few things on my hands before I can call one again. I didn’t know you wanted them that badly? Is there something you’d like to discuss there?”

“Look, if you keep those vampires in check, I don’t want Klaus anywhere near me, my friends, or this town.” Matt shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t care who rules the city, as long as the humans and my friends are safe, okay?” He wasn’t sure what Klaus would do if he’d come back. Yeah, keeping those rules Marcel had set seemed to fit his plan the last time he was here, but who said it would still fit him this time? Klaus could change his mind at any moment and any time. And he knew what would happen if Klaus decided that humans were not important to him anymore. “I know that it means that if we don’t stop them, humans in this town are gonna die. Because that’s what it always means. That humans die.” Matt raised his eyebrows and took a deep breath. He was never gonna be as fast and strong as those vampires. But he could try to be smarter. “I’ll text you the names later. I need to look them up, but I wrote them all down.” Matt cocked his head. “I actually kinda liked the last four years. I’m don’t wanna go back to what it was like.”

“So somehow we do agree. You really think Klaus would have just kept it at killing my friends and eventually me? You and the other humans would have been next. Simple.” Klaus had simply crossed a line, one he had crossed so many times before. “This wouldn’t be the first city he destroyed. It’d just be another name on his endless list.” With supporters of Klaus slowly getting back to town, he could use all the support from the ones who had to fear a return of the Originals as well. Matt might be one of those people. “I’ll deal with them once I found them. Promise. These rules are mine and they need to be kept in place to make this place run smoothly.” And yeah... Matt was right. Humans were always the first to die. Maybe that was their place in the grand scheme of things. But he needed those humans to keep New Orleans the way he liked it. So if that meant he had to protect them... that was how it was going to be. “Fine. I’ll see them.” He smiled slightly at the last remark. “So do I. Maybe we’re on the same side after all, Donovan.”
